Why does Brooker bother watching all that bad TV? It must be ghastly for him, no?

It's his job. What's your excuse?

So, if I was being paid to have an opinion, that would be fine? What a poor argument.

You're missing the point. Brooker watches a lot of bad television because writing amusingly about bad television is what he does for a living, at least in part.

Well, no - the point appears to be "don't be a critic of this critic", no matter how it's framed.

As if I spend hours poring over his columns anyway! It's a quick scan to keep up with conversation, not much more.

No one is saying that. This board is full of criticisms of Brooker, some of them deserved. It's hardly as if the place is awash with blinkered Brooker fanboys, is it?

Eh? Whose conversation are you keeping up with?

Eh? You made I remark that I didn't agree with so I responded to it. This is an internet forum, that sort of thing tends to happen quite a lot.

I've no problem with you expressing an opinion. I just fail to see why you'd skim read a column if, to you, it isn't even worth reading simply to find the "four screamingly obvious points" and then - and then - come on to a forum to tell people that's what you do! It just seems retarded.

Having cultural awareness of someone's work - which is relevant irrespective of whether I like it or not - is not retarded.

Someone says "Oh, did you see what Brooker said about X this week?" in an email, I bother to check out what he did say so I can reply (knowing it won't take me too long), for instance. There you go.

Surely if his points are "screamingly obvious" you've no need to seek it out at all?

It was a good post, and this is the brooker hate thread

(and I'm generally pro-brooker anyway, so...)

It's not.  I may hate his work, but I don't hate him.  Important distinction.  Nor do I want this to be a general 'sling shit' thread - this was meant to tackle a particularly persistent motif in his writing.  Having said that...

God, tons - I haven't time to read at the mo, but Neil, you've misunderstood me. I'm not saying criticism isn't important - as I said, the ones you mentioned were masters, taking their jobs very seriously - I'm saying it isn't by it's nature important. Are you telling me Baz Bazinboye's reviews in The Mail are art? Or the bits in Radio Times? Of course they're not. And I see Brooker as somewhere in between that and those who took their profession ever so seriously. You lift my quote that directly answered your claim that Brooker's books aren't ephemeral (which they are) then use it to argue against a point I was never making there. No fair.

In fact, reading the rest you've repeatedly pulled quotes out of context, so I'll fuck it off here before it gets annoying.

My full reply to this was here, rudi.  I was very annoyed at the time that you accused me of 'repeatedly pulling quotes out of context', as it tacitly implied that I did so purposely.  I can assure you I did not, and would not, and I'm still curious to know exactly which quotes I am meant to have 'pulled out of context.'

Can you settle this for me, finally, now you're back in this discussion?  Either that, or retract the accusation.  Thanks.

Fucking hell, six months ago? I'll go read it all again later if I can work up the enthusiasm. Six months...

And yet when I suggested that you'd strayed from the central "why all the jizz, Charlie?" subject and asked if a more general thread asking "is he funny?" should perhaps be launched you replied

That's exactly what the thread is about, amongst a multitude of other things, regardless of how many times you pretend it isn't.

OK I've re-read the thread now. Do you really want to go through this (six months ago!) or were you just pissed, in the mood for disagreement and had run out of tag space in that thread you disapproved of?

[ed This sounds more antagonistic than intended.]

Gah! I keep forgetting; the reason I came into the thread was to say that CB's column today relies heavily on his other "obsession" (poo) and the final paragraph had me literally coughing my cup of tea up over my dressing gown this morning.

That's because people like you tried to thread-shit on it from the first page onwards, and seized on an off-hand comment I made about listing, which was then used to try and reductively turn it into a 'hate thread' - you yourself likened it to a 'Gervais the evidence' style thread.  I think it's screamingly obvious I'm trying also trying to get people to have specific, topical, short-lived threads, and therefore I don't want this used as (or known as) a "Brooker hate thread".  This isn't Digital Spy, after all, and we don't need such black-and-white distinctions.

I like how you've tried to paint me as a hypocrite, while referring back to something I said six months ago.  Despite the fact that, because I did say it six months ago, that might then give some obvious indication why I'd then want to point out that it's not a general criticism thread.  I'm not the one who bumped it, and I'm not the one who flounced out of the thread after making some pretty unpleasant accusations (and then kept sneaking back, despite neither explaining nor aplogising).  Your bullying, aggressive, cross-thread attack here - and the needlessly personal tone to it - confirms what I originally thought, with regards why you actually flounced.  So I'll leave it there.

Well you can't have it both ways. Either it's a thread about one particular thing (as your OP strongly suggests) or it's a more general thread (as you rudely stated was something I'd been misunderstanding in the above quote). Which is it to be?

Quote

Well, let's be honest; it was six months ago. I'd certainly not have had to trawl through the whole thread had you not asked me to back up something written all the way back then. Again, you can't have your cake and eat it I'm afraid.

But six months ago you did say that. That's my point!

Oh hush; I said you'd pulled my quuotes out of context, not made "pretty unpleasant accusations". There's no need for such a level of hysterical hyperbole. I'm trying to be polite (or at least level-headed).

Quote
(and then kept sneaking back, despite neither explaining nor aplogising).

I came back SIX MONTHS LATER having entirely forgotten the details that occurred earlier. That's hardly repeated, nor sneaking. Why have you taken this shrill tone?

Quote

Are you fucking KIDDING?? Read back your reply here then accuse me again of being aggressive.  Bloody hell fire, man! I'm pretty much speechless...

And cross-thread? Did I? If so it was unintended. Bullying? Really? To who, you? Be careful how often you chuck that term about; it's not appreciated. I won't affect being hurt; I'm just a bit shellshocked to be honest.

No, it wasn't unintended, it was calculated bullying - you deliberately dragged something that happened days ago in another thread  (in the tags, in fact), and recounted it with a cunty spin on it, and needlessly personal stuff about being 'pissed and looking for a fight.'  The obsessively thorough Fisking you gave the post where I said 'I'll bow out' says it all, really.  Any chance you can just...steer clear of me?  I'm not sure we exactly bring out the best in each other.  And perhaps leave out the personal stuff about 'being pissed' in future?

EDIT:  Resolved via PM, reopening, but can people let this drop?

Can people also start their own threads, rather than digging up dead ones?  Cheers.
