Because that distracting shit aside, it seems they're treating a ripe subject with plenty of absurdity - a good thing. I just won't be able to get past that awkward shuffling sensation (direction & performance) if the whole film is like that.

The serious fellow has a brilliant voice and presence.

It's supposed to be 'Dad's Army with terrorists', and that looks like what we're going to get.

Yes to both of these.

Those fidgety zooms...[shudder]

Those are shot through the character's camera. You can hear the background hiss increase too.

Only from one angle, though - there are fussy shakycam zooms over the shoulder of the dense character.

You know who the serious guy reminded me of in terms of voice and delivery? Jason Statham's character in Snatch. Amirite?

Yeah I definitely thought there was some Statham about him. Looks promising anyway, the sillier the better I think.

I'm even more excited than before now, my fingers are typing with extreme trepidation that I won't be able to see this film soon.

So... so... SO pleased that clip's actually funny and contains proper silliness and discernible gags rather than the pathetic anti-jokes of Barley.

Completely agree with the observation about it echoing the Peter O'Hanrohanrohan (sp?) exchanges... but what I immediately thought of were the scenes with Baynham vs Morris in the R1 shows. Stuff like Morris explaining the truth behind Christmas.

Very encouraging. I finally feel like I can really look forward to this film.

I loved that short clip and felt immediate empathy for the naive northern jihadi. I like he way he's flung a cockney in there too, perhaps the cell will be a microcosm of great British comedy stereotypes.. There is certainly a rich vein of humour to be gleaned from the premise.

That was about 4000 times funnier than the first ITL clip they had up...

Won't bother me either way how similar it is or isn't to Nathan Barley seeing as I'm one of the 14 people who rated that show rather highly.

Can't wait for this.

I laughed - if it has that level of consitency with some heart thrown in I'll be very happy. Still not sure why Morris is so keen to be a director when his talents clearly lie in writing and performing; I think Armando and he are the perfect team to be honest, I'd love to see them collaborate again.

I liked that rather a lot, it's looking good, but...

...some distracting My Wrongs/Barley-isms to the direction/editing/performances.

Wasn't quite as bad as Barley in that regard, but I do wish he'd stop doing that - the shakycam thing in particular.

I too wish they'd collaborate again, but sadly I don't think that would sort out the deliberate-shakycam issue, as I had to stop watching The Thick Of It halfway through the first episode as I literally (and I do mean literally) got motion sickness.  I listened to the rest of it from the next room, but could never bring myself to try and watch any more of it, which is a real shame as otherwise it's clearly a very good show.

This clip didn't have that effect on me, although I worry whether it might do on a big cinema screen.  Nevertheless, I'm eagerly looking forward to it.

They did, with the post-9/11 Onion ripoff The Smokehammer. It was rubbish.

Agree with the collective praise so far for that clip.  It's made me less nervous about the film now.  So, when is it out?

The Smokehammer was that Bush cutup video wasn't it? What was wrong with that? Of course you can only make those things so good, and they're hardly ever going to be great, but it was hardly rubbish.

Is this a full length film, or a 40 minute thing? Also, when does it get screened at Sundance?

Just seen that clip. Brilliant - the serious guy looks wonderful, and I was chuckling all the way through. I adore the idea of something so dark and frightening being torn apart by slapstick and silliness. Really looking forward to this now.

Getting motion sickness from a shaky camera? That's the least cool thing I've ever heard.

I agree, and it can be done to brilliant effect. See The Great Dictator for more details

What's the big fellow called?  I'd better get all this stuff gathered for another update, I think I've some old bits and pieces to dig out too.  I'm still deeply impressed by him, and so very relieved.  The casting in Nathan Barley was astonishingly bad - I'm not just saying that because The Boosh were in it, Spencer Brown, Oliver Chris, Richard Ayoade, and yes Noel Fielding were all desperately awful.  Nicholas Burns was another... shruggy nonsense and no ability to perform comedy.  The big man out-performs each and every one of them in two minutes.  And as I mentioned yesterday, his voice is excellent, and the voice is my favourite instrument.  Iannucci has a great ear for voices, see for example James Smith as Glenn Cullen or Alan Ford as the east end thug.

The late, great Michael Alexander St. John was clearly exceptionally gifted in this regard, but then when you get someone like Richard Ayoade - that's just NOT a voice for comedy.  Some people manage to overcome this by good writing and suitable characterisation, with Mitchell and Webb being perhaps the best example.

Very promising and funny comedy logic in this clip too...the way the beard line folds back on itself is getting back to the kind of inspired and original ideas that Morris used to chuck out in the likes of the GLR 'Ten Ways' bits.  He's writing proper jokes again, shitloads of them, by the looks of it.  That 2-minute clip has excited me quite a bit.  Thanks for posting it by the way, Zoetrope.
