Where were you born?
« on: September 07, 2010, 12:03:08 am »
Some train of thought or other earlier in the day got me thinking about the place I was born, the Nightingale Nursing Home on London Road in Derby, named after Derby's most famous daughter, Florence, and on a road that obviously pointed towards where I would move when I was older.

Worryingly, the last few times I've been to Derby, I've noticed that it's currently standing empty, the windows boarded up and everything, which leads me to wonder if it's going to be demolished. If so - where will they put the blue plaque?

Funnily enough, a couple of years ago on one of my visits back home to see the folks, I was walking from the train station to my parents house and passed a pub on the corner of London Road, a couple of hundred yards from the Nightingale. I was in my heavily bearded stage at the time, and pulling a suitcase on wheels, which prompted a bunch of drunken twats outside the pub to start shouting and jeering (obviously never having seen a magical box with wheels before.) One of them shouted, "Welcome to England, mate!" (all foreigners denoted by beards, naturally), and I had to stop myself from mentioning that I was probably a damn sight closer to where I was born than any of them were.

So, where did you lot first appear in the World?

train...derby....the bells, the bells.

I was born in Scunthorpe Hospital. I've never lived in the place and don't like it very much (Scunthorpe, not the hospital). I occasionally watch their team play. Luckily the ground is nowhere near most of Scunthorpe

Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport.

Not much of a story in it, but what's wrong with the truth every now and then?

Watford general, which is right next to the football ground so I walk past it every couple of weeks. And have been back inside it fair few times lately with my grandparents.

Redhill General, in Surrey. It was demolished around 1990, and is now a rather posh looking housing estate. I've often thought about getting hold of the plans for both, to see if I could walk in to someone's front room and tell them that I was born there. It'd be quite cool if I could track down where I had my barium enema thirteen years later, too.

The Wrexham Maelor Hospital, a very boring but enormous hospital that sprawls across both sides of a road in a mishmash of various bits and bobs. It's worryingly near to a level crossing which must cause problems when someone is being taken there in an ambulance and needs to get urgent care when a ridiculously long freight train is passing by (I've seen trains near there that are so long it takes five minutes for the whole thing to pass). There's now a hotel near the hospital, which was the sight of a pretty disastrous birthday dinner from a few years ago - so bad that the crappiness of the lamb is still a running joke in my family.

I knew I'd read three or four in and find this. Just had a feeling. Me too. I was a Rhosddu boy. The words Ramada Plaza in the Wrexham accent is a thing of joy.

Most things are a thing of joy in the Wrexham accent. Nobody else pronounces 'co-op' like that.

Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Couldn't tell you the hospital, but I am surprised that every one else's memory appears to stretch back that far. I guess I've just never had an eye for detail.

I was born in Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. It's an exciting hospital, full of all kinds of walls and doors, and even floors.

Because I am very old, I was born back when Loughborough actually had a hospital with a maternity ward...but I was too difficult for them, so they sent mum off to Leicester instead.

You know, I can't believe that they haven't made a sort of spin-off series of Who Do You Think You Are a little like this, with different celebs presenting hour-long documentaries on their hometowns, its history, its people, its oddities etc. It's just such a horrifically obvious idea.

Oh, and East Hamlet Hospital, Ludlow, cheers.

Radio 4 has something like a bit that where the rich and famous complain how poky their childhood home was compared to the palaces and mansions they occupy now: The House I Grew Up In.

Ha! Sorry, forgot about your trigger words.

My one and only time in a hospital for medical reasons.

So far, same here. I'd be quite happy to keep it that way until someone is performing a post-mortem on me, too. (In about 2070).

No, it's the place where most Neighbours characters go when they get written out.

All Saint's Hospital, Chatham. As were most of my classmates, as it was the main maternity hospital for the Medway Towns. It closed in 1999, and if I were being born now I would be being born in Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham, where my dad died.

My boyfriend was born in the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. Twenty years later, I was having architecture lectures in there.

This really shiny black altar in an underground cavern type thing.  I still don't know what that was all about.  Good video, though.

I can't compete with an underground cavern although there are some who would say West Bromwich is far more scary than that. I was born in the same hospital as Frank Skinner although not at the same time - or out of the same womb.

Grimsby...hospital. Google informs me that it's now called the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital. Nice.

I hate having been born in Grimsby though, my parents lived there for roughly two years, and the only time I ever visit is to hurl abuse at the locals from the away end at Blundell Park. It's also a terrible place.
