A demo's appeared on PS4. Big download for quite a short spell of play.

Very immersive though. Looks interesting.

I gave it ten minutes or so before uninstalling. Seems it's prompted lots of theories and discussion about puzzles and stuff. Some people have discovered some hidden stuff and it seems to have inspired a bit of enthusiasm. Not to be a graphics wanker but it looked like a PS3 game and the animation and voice stuff was very stiff. I do think Uncharted 4 has spoiled me a bit. Anyway, it kind of killed the immersion for me, though I appreciate that the naffness is part of the Resi charm. I'll probably give the full game a good go, though. Also looking forward to the Resi 4 Remaster in September or whenever.

Entropy Balsmalch

I've not played 6 and hated 5.

But yes.

4.

For me though, the greatest version of 4 by far was on the Wii. The laser-gun element of aiming while still retaining full FP control made it really special.

Osmium

"Spooky" ghost house walking simulator rubbish. It will be interesting to see where they go with it, but right now it just looks like they shat it from creating a new ip and slapped the Resident Evil name on it. All the trying to discover secrets, theories and whatnot seems a bit despirate.

Totally agree with you. I played through the Wii version back to back to back when I first got it, the week after I got and completed the GC version! In fact, I'm gonna set it up now and give it a bash. Amazing game.

I played about three minutes of 5 and zero of 6.

Apparently, Evil Within is the true spiritual successor to RE4 but I played it and found the framerate unbearable, like, perhaps the worst I've ever experienced on a console. Rotating the camera was almost physically uncomfortable on my eyes.

I also agree that I don't see how this is linked to the Resi world at all. I appreciate them trying something different but it's not Resident Evil 7, if it breaks from the 3rd person gameplay, it's a spin off, surely?

Hollow

Nowhere near enough bouncing boobs and jiggling shapely backsides for me.

Junglist

The demo is not part of the actual game, and the game will have a different protagonist. This is just a thing ala PT.

Thanks for that info, I did wonder actually.

I was just thinking I thought it was intended as a "statement of intent" and those are the exact words used in that article.

All sounds good to me, putting the atmosphere back on horror, puzzles, resources management.  You know, what everyone's been asking for, for years.

Resi 4 is one of the greatest games of all time, but Capcom took all the wrong lessons from it.

Consignia

I've been surprised about the negative reaction to the demo. For a long time people have been complaining about the actiony type of game, and this seems like a breath of fresh air for the franchise.

It's not for me, first person + jump scares, but it does like interesting direction and evolution of the earlier games. Also harks back to an earlier tenet in games where sequels were completely different to the predecessors.

brat-sampson

If it helps, I'd say the demo has zero jump scares. It's a lot more about atmosphere and buildup. Personally I didn't feel all that scared, but at least I was pleased that when the more horrific elements *did* occur it wasn't accompanied with a super-loud noise/effect. Ok, maybe one small one.

I wrote this in the other thread but I liked the demo.

I played this yesterday, I was a bit shocked how quickly it was over to be honest. I wish they'd just created a new IP though rather than using the Resident Evil/Biohazard brand for such an extreme departure. It was an enjoyable enough 25 mins, decent atmosphere and the

RE4 Wii is one third-party port that completely nailed a Wii control-scheme in a sea of shitty tacked on wiggling. I had the PS2 version (never owned a Gamecube) and never managed to finish it because I had trouble with the aiming, everything just seemed a bit sluggish and slow. Blasted through the Wii version no problem.

You could hardly call it a 'port'.

The Wii is basically just a Gamecube.

Van Dammage

I'll never understand why Resi 4 is so loved. It's just a decent action game with annoying escort elements. 3 was much better.

I know. I'm in an extremely small minority here but it just never clicked with me. I liked it but I just don't understand what everyone else can see in it.

Don't be daft. The Wii is a cuboid.

I took more issue with "Resi 3 is better" I played it for the first time a little while ago because it was a gap in my Resi history. It was fine but forgettable.

If you'd said "Resident Evil Remake is better than Resident Evil 4" Then I would disagree but respect that opinion.

Van Dammage

I do like REmake, 2 and 3 more than 4. Although 4 is much better than what came afterwards.

Man the HD REmake was so fucking great. And weirdly considering it's a remaster of a remake I found it so fresh to play when it came out. In a time of hand holdey, waypointey, fetch questy, easy games everywhere you look, it was so nice to play a game that establishes the environment then just leaves you alone to figure out the rest for yourself.

Couldn't pick a preference out of REmake and 4. The two best RE's imo.

One reason I thought RE3 suffered is because it lifted too much from RE2 wholesale, the reused police station even had the same camera angles and music, unaltered. Also it was a bit of a comedown how small the game felt after RE2's double characters and their alternate narratives.

God, RE2 was grand. I played it to death, trying to complete it faster each time, unlocking all the bonus stuff. I hope the planned REmake 2 lives up to the quality of the first REmake.

To all y'all who rag on 5.

FUCK. YOU.

Have you ever tried replaying 4?

IT'S FUCKIN SHIT.

Sorry, it's not shit, but it's got a horrible feeling to it that I found really off-putting.
If you're some wank who likes 'immersivitilitity' in your games (turning down the lights, box of Kleenex etc), fine... Enjoy your wank.
I tried replaying it recently and I found it dreadfully dull and plodding. And brown... really really brown. So brown it actually upset me.

Also, 5 is one of the best co-op games of the ps3 era. I must admit I've never even tried the single player.

6 was terrible AIDS though. It had a lot of 'so bad it's good' qualities but that's no excuse.

Yes it's still fucking great.

Honestly can't comprehend how someone could think this about 4, but not 5. I mean I suppose 4 is in a rainy muddy village for the first part of the game, while 5 is in a sunny... but still quite muddy town.

I do like 5, and I'm sure it's much better in co-op. But it's just not as well designed. In every aspect, it's similar to Resi 4 but not as good.

Hangthebuggers

I'm pretty much agreeing with Van Dammage. I miss the atmosphere and style of the older games.

RE1 and the remake and RE2 are the best for me (although I doubt I could go back to them now, besides the remake). I loved the mystery and atmosphere of the first especially.

Reading through the notes left in the mansion and police station really painted a horrible picture in my mind. And the music was class.

My mate completed one and two just using the knife as a weapon, just to show off.

Yay, I also did that with RE2, but I was only showing off to myself really. It certainly doesn't make a good pub anecdote.

Most low-level enemies (zombies, dogs, lickers etc) can be simply avoided, but some of the bosses can be very tricky. The alligator in particular is a bastard to kill with the knife, it's hard enough to kill with guns (without using the Jaws method).

Here's a  pretty decent video about remake which explains a lot of what I love about it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df_ET25Z-EQ

Resident Evil 4 was a good game. Just not a Resident Evil game. I suspect that Resident Evil 7 will take it in a new direction like 4 did.

It will be interested to see if they drop any semblance of continuity. The plot is so ridiculous now. The worst bit for me was how the first three games were all about Umbrella's experiments and the effect on Raccoon City. After

in RE3 they basically just said "oh yeah, Umbrella shut down. Here are some parasites that make people a bit like zombies. And Leon."

Don't agree with this. The pace is much faster, certainly, but there are a lot of elements from the previous games. It's like the difference between Alien and Aliens. Different, but both good.

Agree with this. The story has been ridiculous from day one, but adding continuity just makes it completely absurd. The second game follows the first nicely, but after that they should be different retellings of the same basic story. Like Zelda essentially. It's not as if the story is so unique and compelling that anyone needs to find out what happens. The story and the characters are not what makes the game good. The heart of the game is the world itself - the architecture, the scraps of information you come across, the set-pieces, etc.
