Two solid-gold dancefloor classics from 1983 that I've recently rediscovered.

But WHICH PLAYS WITH YOUR NODULAR NOODLES more?

Dr Rock

The Rock Steady Crew by a mile. KC can get bent.

Mr Banlon

I used to well fancy Baby Love from Rocksteady when I was 13. She's still blummin lovely.

Jockice

Hey You is one of the greatest singles ever released. Give It Up is quite good.

Dr Syntax Head

OH MY FUCKING GOD! I love that rock steady crew song but I hate myself for forgetting it existed. I wish I could power positive karma you right now. Thank you!

Dr Syntax Head

True story. Back before the net and the ability to have iPod playlists I had a tape that I imaginatley called 'Happy music'[nb]I'm a diagnosed bi-polar sufferer, didn't know this back then[/nb]and the KC song was number one. Best thread ever! Neil, this is where your karma limit falls down.

Dr Syntax Head

Rock steady crew are a cure for depression. I'm crying right now. Massive nostalgia injection.

Dr Syntax Head

You just know that the Beastie Boys would vote RSC

Brundle-Fly

Rock Steady Crew have nudged it for me because it has vim.  It is also far more progressive than KC And The Sunshine Band's tune.

Mind you, for all their smooth breakdance moves, RSC (or the Royal Shakespeare Company, as I never used to call them) could never match this.

SWEET!

the science eel

The Rock Steady Crew song is about as primary colours as it gets. So bold with those synths! the squeaking, descending thing - fuck!

They weren't always like that, they started off proper scruffy gets. https://youtu.be/0EW22LzSaJA?t=2007

Funnily enough[nb]Not remotely funny[/nb] KC & the Sunshine Band's 'Let It Go'  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji1UHOqBR0A  is still a B-Boy classic, whereas 'Hey You !' isn't at all.

A gorgeous young lady once dragged me onto a Liverpool club floor to dance to Hey You to cheer me up at a December end-of-term bash. She never did become any more than a friend, for all of my clumsy efforts - I was only 19 or so - but she was a damn fine friend and Hey You is a damn fine tune. Cheered me up like that. Well, the tune, her grin, and her big jiggling Wally Jumblatts.

Glebe

I have a soft spot for 'Give it Up' and actually play it on guitar. Do the little funky bits and everything.

She always brought that lump with her. I wonder where Wally is today?

Give it Up's my first Top of the Pops memory - so it's got my vote for kick-starting the music part of my brain into action [nb](and probably the sex part of my brain too with old slinky pants on BV's!)[/nb]

One of my all time favourite breaks - this one's for all the old ravers out there

Fun fact, Hey You was basically written and produced by PSB/New Order/Erasure etc super producer Stephen Hague.

Can I count on all your support in this thread to rail against the (recent?) attempts to get Buffalo Stance into some sort of b-boy classic national treasure category?

I love Buffalo Stance, It's great pop tune - but it's not hip hop

BTW have you ever heard the original

Buffalo Stance is ok. It's not hip hop but it's a good thing. Manchild is better. Still not hip hop though.

Dr Syntax Head

Message to the OP. Hey you is repeat listening in my house this weekend. Your work is done.

Yes. And Manchild doesn't have those two annoying cows dancing behind Neneh.

Another vote for the Rock Steady Crew here

"Digital!"

It's not quite in the uplfiting electro vein, but it's still a nice happy electro tune that gets me air synthing, keytaring and air slapbassing with the best of them

In the history of CaB this is a great thread

In what way is Buffalo Stance not hip hop? It has rapping, sampling and scratching on it.

monkfromhavana

"breaking in space is a thing in the 80sssssssssssssssssssss"

"I caught the groove now I'm part of the breakdance team"

Probably my favourite electro tune, top 80s sax, some scratching, a UFO theme,  and some top synth work at 3.05
