No, not that kind.

Are they good? Are they bad? Are unhappy endings just as lazy? What about ambiguous endings?

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

If depends on the film. The themes and tone, etc.

I thought the last Captain America film was marred by having him and Iron Man make up almost instantly, after they'd spent twenty minutes duffing each other up.

My sister and I disagree about whether 'Boogie Nights' has an happy ending or not. I say yes, she says otherwise.  She maintains that Amber and Dirk still being in porn makes it sad, but I think Buck with his family, and Roller Girl back in school, Reed doing his shit magic and Amber directing Buck's stereo commercial tips it to happy for me.

2001 is the ultimate happy ending. The human race succeeds, it evolves, passes the extraterrestrial/celestial test, transcends itself. Imagine that!

I was thinking about this because of Get Out, which has a

ending, so switching it up makes for a more interesting experience. In theory, anyway, still not sure.

Mr Brightside

The ending of The Wicker Man (1973) is my favourite ending.

But what if it didn't have a happy ending?

But what if it didn't have a happy ending?

Then it would have been a load of wank, but as a pagan, the ending gave me a lob on.

Peele said in an interview that it was originally going to end that way, but ending the way that it does it still makes the same point anyway by playing off the audience's assumptions.

What about ambiguous endings?

The Thing (1982)
Spoiler alert
ends with the monster blown up, and two survivors from the polar base.  We don't know if they're going to survive, as most of the base got blown up-and one of them was out of shot long enough so that he might be incubating the creature that took over the others.

Bittersweet, I'd say.

I think most folk agree that the director's cut of Blade Runner has the better ending than the original cinema release.

Similarly to the 'Love Conquers All' ending edited by the producer on Gilliam's Brazil

My favourite bittersweet ending is The Graduate, often misinterpreted as happy. Yes they

but they've no clue what to do from there and have basically just hurricaned their lives.

Yeah I think everyone assumed one thing was going to happen when the cop car pulled up. It's a bit of a cheat in a way, but in the end I think they made the right choice.

As a long-term horror geek I found the ending

refreshing after getting so used to so many modern horror movies closing in a downbeat nihilistic way, which had probably contributed to me quitting my annual October horror movie marathon a couple of years ago.
