He must be the worst offender - no, not in that way - as he really doesn't care for most of his best films. He's right about The Purple Rose of Cairo, it's a beautiful work of art, but that's about it.

I watched Manhattan again last night. It's a masterpiece, but I think - and obviously I don't know this categorically - the reason Woody wanted to bury it is because it's so uncomfortably honest and self-lacerating.

Yeah, definitely. I mean, he could have made Tracy 18 or 21 and the theme of her being too young for him would've been the same. But he had to make her 17.
