The Kinks (All day and All Of The Night)
The Doors (Hello I love you )

Ray Davies said he wouldn't sue the Doors if they  admitted  they lifted his song idea, which they did apparently. I think the Kinks background team sued anyway.

I have read a few times the guitar riff on (Smells like Teen Spirit) is a rip off of ( U mass) by the Pixies.  Nirvana have been quoted as saying Teen Spirit is just a pixies song. The albums both these  songs are from  Tompe Le Monde and Nevermind  came out at the same time, so  not sure if this song was Nirvanas inspiration.

I think it came from Kurt messing around with the chords from Boston's More Than A Feeling, to the extent they would jam around on it before slipping into Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Serge

CAN - Moonshake
CAN - Don't Say No

Pinch - Qawwali
Pinch - Brighter Day

To be fair, in the case of the Pinch track, it's because his debut album exists in two versions, one with vocals and the other instrumental, so the version of Qawwali with vocals was presumably renamed for that reason.

Similarly, PiL retitled 'Death Disco' as 'Swan Lake' on 'Metal Box' (not sure if this was for legal reasons as they'd borrowed the melody from SL for DD anyway....)

Dr Syntax Head

Shake the Dope out-Warlocks
Boys Better-Dandy Warhols
White light white heat-Velvets

This is a lyrical rather than musical one, and I am sure I am the last to know this but Leaves That Are Green by Simon and Garfunkel begins with the words:

"I was 21 years when I wrote this song, I'm 22 now but I won't be for long".

Sound familiar?

Monkey Gone to Heaven is the generally assumed song.

I think Kobane was referring more to the Pixies's dynamics and sound though.

The reprise in Judas' Death is even more similar to WTIL?:

I think this is more for the 'Your plagiarism suspects' thread - my examples where all cases where artists had recycled their own work. To be fair to the KLF, when it was put to him in a 1991 interview Bill said they had never heard the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.

He wasn't asked if they had ever heard Anne Clark's 1984 single Into Darkness though:

Regardless, even if it wasn't a coincidence, it's one of the few things they didn't get sued for during their career. The only sample on '1987' that they didn't get sued for was from The Fall's 'Totally Wired', and as a result King Boy D namechecks MES in The Prestwich Prophets Grin on Who Killed The JAMs?

Great reply Busby - the Judas Reprise is even closer

Our Darkness was a big influence on New Beat and techno/house - well established on Ron Hardy''s playlist at the Music Box
