Sexiest voices in music

Been thinking about horn inducing vocalists and the one that came to me first is Romy Croftby from The XX. In paticular on the song Islands.

Theres something lazy and natural about her voice that just feels like she's sprawled out on a couch somewhere. Just singing to you alone. I can't stand overly put on sexy vocals a lot of lounge singers use where they do a breathy whisper as if wanking in the recording booth.

Now to undermine what I just said, a lounge singer who has the worst songwriters in the business but I can't deny theres something sexy about young Mariah Carey's squealing and mewling.

Dr Rock

Susanna Hoffs.

Hope Sandoval.

Stoneage Dinosaurs

Ari Up out of the Slits, there's something about mad germanic yelping that just does it for me.

And on the male front of things, I'd have to go for the lovely velvety baritone pipes of Kevin Ayers.

manticore

Harriet Wheeler. The way she sings the word 'letters' is quite mindblowing.
'Oh the devil in me said/Go down to the shed/I know where I belong.' Jesus.

Johnny Clarke.

Lemming

I've always felt that in many Smashing Pumpkins songs, Billy Corgan's eccentric vocals can be weirdly sexual, assuming you're able to make yourself completely ignore or forget that it's Billy Fucking-Idiot-Pretentious-Dickhead-Appearing-On-InfoWars-To-Spout-A-Load-Of-Utter-Bollocks Corgan singing.

Liz Phair's vocals on certain songs from Exile in Guyville are sexy in a very weird and uncomfortable way, which I suppose is the point.

jobotic

The fella from The Ladybug Transistor has a lovely brown voice.

Plus Francoise Hardy, Holly Golightly, Kyra Rubella and as I mentioned elsewhere, this...

The fact that when I saw the thread title--before reading the thread--I went and put that exact song on shows that this is absolutely true.

She just sounds so care-free and vital, at all times. Also a bit like how I'd imagine the voice of a girl's heartfelt diary entry.

Yeah Harriet Wheeler's voice is utterly lovely and heart achingly naive. The rest of her is certainly Phwoarr worthy too.

How could I forget Debbie Harry?

The very sexiest Harriet Wheeler moment might be in Goodbye, just before the solo and the heavens shudder. "Falling down on my knees, crawling".

Also the actual heaven shuddering is good. "As the heavens shudder baby, I belong to you". Imagine being called baby like that. Just imagine it. Oh god. "And all they said was true-ooh-ooh". Oh my god. You're just fucking aching with passion, and managing to be completely innocent with it at the same time.

I have a thing for female singers that have a bit of rasp or huskiness to their voice. Sia doesn't use her 'crooning' style much these days, but her vocals on Lullaby are gorgeous. There's also Get Me from the start of her solo career.

I was also very partial to Sam Brown Stop - it's such a shame she's completely lost her voice now.

Sexton Brackets Drugbust

Kim Deal. I got in trouble with a girlfriend for observing that Kim Deal had a sexy voice, as if such a declaration was the first step in an impending affair.

Maxi Jazz, especially in the first verse of Not Going Home https://youtu.be/jqmtqbNuqG4?t=33s

Almost got a Grindr account when I first heard that.

"It's the memories of the shed that make me turn red, surprise surprise surprise."

Oh my goodness, yes.  Not to mention:

"And did you know desire's a terrible thing? / The worst that I can find / And did you know desire's a terrible thing? / But I rely on mine..."

Although I'm not so sure that her voice is intrinsically sexy, it's more those lyrics and the WAY she sings them.  So if she was singing something else, although her voice would be pleasant, I'm not sure how sexy it would be.  EDIT: scrub that, I just sneaked it on, oh my God, I'd forgotten the gasping...

Liz Fraser from the Cocteau Twins had her moments, especially in their earlier work.  There's some tracks such as "All But an Ark-Lark" that put the hairs up on the back of my neck as she mutters, murmurs, gurgles and then lets out primal yells... it's a far cry from her later sickly-sweet cosyness.

I suspect that if I were that way inclined, I'd find Brendan Perry from Dead Can Dance's voice very sexy.  As it is I just find it awesome and beautiful.

I'm sure there's many more I can think of, but... well, they'll come to me later. ;-)

P.S. Honorable mention also to Toni Halliday from Curve.  Some of her vocals on their first three brilliant EPs (Blindfold, Frozen, Cherry) is awesome.  Oh, and Kristen Hersh from the Throwing Muses just wants to make me hug her when she's in "vulnerable" mode ("And why do I wanna die?" and especially "I can't forget a dream.  You own a question, it's a body.")  Sigh.

EDIT: Oh Christ, and Björk when she's being raunchy.

I need to go to bed now.  Remembering all this fantastic music that I'm not allowed to listen to any more is getting me down.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

"Ooh, how are you? Shan't say I really care at the end of it all"

Girl got sass.

Fonz

Debbie Harry, no doubt in my mind.

The third time she sings
"Oh, I can't control myself!"

in 'Hanging..." makes me melt every time I hear it.

Crabwalk

Dusty Springfield's voice, tone and phrasing circa Dusty in Memphis... phwoar. So sultry. Breakfast in Bed

Al Green soundtracked many an attempted deduction in my younger years. Who could resist this: What a Wonderful Thing Love is? Loads of people it turns out, but that's on me, not Al.

Here are Astrid Gilberto and João Gilberto's very sexy voices combining to great effect: Corcovado

I was going to say Dusty. The Look Of Love is perfect.

The late Trish Keenan (of Broadcast) had a sexy voice to me.

I think my first post on CAB was about Angie Tillett

I see nearly three years on we are both still vying for Angie's affections after school. It was you who pointed me in the direction of that music doc with her in it.  Thanks for that again.

That was a tip top indie CaB thread

Might honestly be just the production but the totally stripped back vocals only Julie Fowlis tracks send tingles everywhere. Especially the balls. You can almost feel her breath on the back of your neck of her softly singing as she tenderly pegs you.
