The Chris Morris Music Show
|
The Chris Morris Music Show was broadcast on Radio One during 1994 and consisted of 23 approximately one-hour episodes plus a double-length special on Boxing Day. The shows followed the same pattern as Morris' earlier radio projects, although this time he was joined in the studio by his collaborator from 'The Day Today', Peter Baynham, and outside the studio by 'man with a mobile phone' Paul Garner. Regular features included Paul Garner's shop-bothering, puerile tannoy announcements and Feedback Reports on important issues such as 'vertical meat'.
The inevitable storm hit after the show on 6th July when Morris played highlights of his attempts to update the BBC obituary tape for Michael Heseltine, a politician who was very much alive at the time. A short suspension was followed by a return to the airwaves on the condition that all future shows were pre-recorded; this caused serious headaches in terms of planning and production, and many later scheduled shows were replaced with repeats. During the Boxing Day special Morris announced the death of broadcaster Jimmy Saville (who again was very much alive). Following this, Radio 1 did not renew his contract. It is believed that Radio 1 hold master recordings of all twenty four shows.
Most of the following are high-quality recordings by Steve Bass2rez, unless noted.
Wednesday 1st June 1994 - Monday 26th December 1994. BBC Radio 1 9:00pm - 10:00pm (except for #14 from 11:00pm - 12:00am and #24 from 1:00pm - 3:00pm)
Chris Morris was suspended for two weeks after the 6th July show. However, the shows were still listed in the Radio Times, the listing for the 13th June show was “Chris and Peter Baynham gargle bats”, and the listing for the 20th June show was “Chris reveals the secrets of donning your own beard - so don't miss it.” Editions of Room 101, Alan Parker's 29 Minutes Of Truth and Comedy Network were broadcast in its place.
There were no new shows for four weeks after the 31st August show as Morris was on holiday, repeats were broadcast instead. The 14th September show was listed as “Anarchic comedy and cabbage flaps” and the 21st September show was listed as “Anarchic comedy as Chris decides to get hip, and announces that he is a sister of Sappho”.
