Erm, I've got a What.Cd account and it seems like I might get kicked off soon, so if anyone wants it, PM me.

Quote from: NoSleep on March 17, 2008, 01:51:34 PMwhat.cd are about to double the allowed membership and are issuing extra invites to power users (unfortunately not myself) for this purpose.

I wanted an invite to give to a mate, but I'm not a power user - couldn't seem to find the requirements either. Got a healthyish 2.x ratio.

Jesus, has anyone seen what they've done to what.cd? Their 'amazing' new interface has abolished music genre categories for torrents, and replaced them with tags, so that you have to laboriously type 'techno' or whatever into a tag search box each time, rather than clicking on a genre heading on the front page. And torrents don't have a genre icon next to them, or anything to indicate if they're mp3 or FLAC or what bitrate, unless you click to look at the torrent. It's a complete fuck up, and they're now banning everyone who complains about it in the forums.

I was just made a Power User and given invites on another torrent site (don't ask, there's a queue waiting). In order for this to occur I had a ratio a little over 1:0 and had uploaded (or downloaded?) 50GB.

Title or artist is all I've ever used to search for torrents on sites like what.cd. They're not exactly the place to be browsing for unknown quantities within genres. Sometimes I will find a single artist's albums dotted over several genres, so it's pretty useless.

All torrents are identified by file type and bitrate in the title, so the symbol has never been an issue for me either.

The new tracker doesn't appear to be working yet, as all my torrents say "Scrape Error: Connection Refused (IO)".

Mmm. It's certainly different. I'll hold out on whether it's better or worse for the time being. However having to change the tracker URL on all my uploaded torrents and also resnatch my downloads is a major pain. They just had a freeleech which they abandoned after an hour or so after telling everyone it would be on for 24 hours. I feel sorry for anyone who queued up a shedload of downloads and then left the PC running. It could ruin someone's hard earned ratio. I get the feeling that the users are in for a rough ride for a few weeks.

You need to upload at least 25gb with a 1.1 ratio to become a Power User, then you get invites. I think they might give you two if you donate (they don't even specify a minimum) but I'd wait until the site settles down first.

Cheers, Chocky. I'm about 10 GB short then.

Not too sure about this interface... can't even remember the categories - they were good pointers. But if the tags are used well, it could be good.

NoSleep

All my torrents seemed to be OK now, including the ones I uploaded. All I did was wait and it all came back, so I'm thinking Chocky may have acted in haste.

chocky909

??

Thing is all my torrents were showing as non connectible since the switch and then I read they had a new tracker. So I copied the URL from my upload page and changed it on one of my uploads, and when it changed status to OK I assumed this had to be done for them to connect. I have no idea what I was doing really and I'm pissed off now that you're suggesting I wasted my time.

They haven't been very informative really. They definately could be giving more information out without you having to brave the eternal mess that is the forums which I generally stay away from because it seems you're only ever one post away from a ban

NoSleep

I agree that they should have announced the important details on the front page, but I think they labour under the illusion that we are all "part of the community": Tens of thousands of people I don't know from Adam. I'll stick to trying to keep up a good ratio.

Uncle Gripper

Hi, does any kind verbwhores have a spare what.cd invite?

your kindness will be repaid in ways you can only imagine!!

alan nagsworth

'Fraid not, sorry. How do you go about earning the privilege of inviting others?

Also what.cd users don't forget FREELEECH has been on for the past couple of days, all the downloading and none of the consequences! FREEEEEEELEEEEEEEEECH! Ends at midnight tonight so go wild. I know I have.

Vitalstatistix

So I've been away from torrenting for a while now due to uni intewebs, is what.cd now established as the best thing since Oink?

If so, anybody have invite ploise, lots of love. x

OH FUCK

OMIGODOMIGOD

Uncle Gripper

Come on you power user bastards, furnish me with that golden invite.

I'm not going to resort to begging.

Well, not right away anyway.

I want to go to the freeleech party as well

You need to upload at least 25gb, upload something and have a ratio of 1.05 or more. Then you become a Poweruser and get given invites occasionally.

My lack of hard drive space has pissed me off no end over this freeleech but I have downloaded a shedload of V0s anyway.

I believe what.cd is the market leader now after a slow start. Waffles is always good as a back up.

Vitalstatistix

Are the recently announced arrests of 6 British Oink users putting anyone off using What.cd?

I know it's illogical but the thought of The Man looking through my hours of 'Japanese smashed train set' porno in search of copyrighted material gives me the heeby jeebies.

Heh, it wouldn't matter much anyway as the first 5gb of downloads are also without consequence. It came at a gorgeous time for me as I'm nearing the 5gb mark with a bad ratio, so consequence-free downloads are perfect to get a bit more seeding done. Plus, free music! wahey! I've been going nuts.

What kind of users were they? I'm guessing they'd start at the top of the chain with the people who downloaded the most stuff, right? Or failing that, the most commercially-recognized stuff? I only say that because generally bigwig record companies are the ones who most fear illegal downloading (and not bigwig bands) so unless you're a fan of "indie" or have insurmountable amounts of music on your computer... well, you're more than welcome to worry but right now I'm not.

Uncle TechTip

Register says they were uppers of pre-release music.

NoSleep

This looks like an issue about the security of major new releases. It was what triggered the action against Oink. I know that, on some major releases, all review copies sent out now have an individual (i.e. for each reviewer) digital "watermark" somehow embedded in the sound, so that any leak onto the net can be traced back to an individual. But it must be next to impossible to promote an album without advanced copies, on CDRs etc, finding their way out there. So the next move is to put the fear on people.

Uncle TechTip

I read that they were going to use RIPA powers to demand these users to give their passwords. I also read that the domain name and wiped servers were returned months ago. Either they've completed all investigations into the site or are maintaining a private ghost version.

So it's either turn in your password which then proves your ownership of an account and perhaps links you with particular uploads or face two years anyway by not giving the password. What's interesting though is whether one could argue that they've forgotten the password, reasonable given the site closed months ago.

I hope no-one here knows no-one affected by this. Maybe these peeps were deep in the record biz or music media. In fact I def hope not as I'm probably perverting the course of justice.

I was on it and I wouldn't even be able to tell you which of my variety of internet usernames I used, never mind which password.  And as for knowing the encryption key... well, who on earth would know a random selection of letters and numbers, in case sensitive form?!

Uncle TechTip

I think that's a catch-all term for 'password' (including 1024-character strong encryption keys)

Going back to the thread title..

If anyone gets any waffles invites, I'd love one. And I sent out a bunch of what.cd ones a while ago, so deserve one too.

I've sent out nothing at all but I'd absolutely love one. I had a Waffles account, went on holiday and they removed it. I should have read the rules a bit more closely, I guess. I'm currently rediscovering the joy/frustration that is Soulseek.

Oh god, me too. I had to wipe my hard drive, and when I reinstalled Soulseek it decided that I wasn't allowed to search for more than one thing or it would crash, tons of bullshit like that. Plus people are pissed off that I'm not sharing any files.

Uncle TechTip

Soulseek's the way to go. Especially if you're a Virgin Media customer, hopefully it's one protocol they aren't paying attention to.

Shit, shit, shit. My dad doesn't know that I download music ... the other way. If we get a letter, he's gonna fucking kill me.
