Unsigned bands on MySpace that are worth checking out

Loathe as I am to promote Murdoch in any way, shape or form, I do feel that MySpace has served one use... that is, to promote bands who otherwise probably wouldn't find their way to people's ears.

For instance, a fantastic band called Three Chords and The Truth added me on Sunday morning, and I clicked on the link to hear some fantastic lazy countrified indie which suited my mood brilliantly.  They can be found here:  http://www.myspace.com/tcandtt  Their track "Take Some Drugs" is particularly worth checking out, especially if you like Teenage Fanclub.  All four tracks are available to download as a free EP.

I've also been something of a fan of SofiZel on the live circuit for awhile now, and whilst she's certainly not going to be everyone's cup of tea - people with an aversion to slightly quirky female singer-songwriters may find themselves terribly tried - I think she's fantastic.  The track "Cold Pleasure" on her site is great, and can be found here:  http://www.myspace.com/sofizel

Any  more?  I'd appreciate pointers, as to be honest I find that the vast majority of bands on MySpace are terrible, and any sort of map would be appreciated.

Don't use this as an excuse to plug your own band though, eh?  Play the game fairly.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: http://www.myspace.com/lilymusic

Although apparently since I first posted a link to her she's been bigged up by Jo Whiley, and so a result is now approximately minus 10,000 cool points.

Ah well, Nan You're a Window Shopper is still a great tune.

EDIT: Oh, actually she's not unsigned because she's got a limited edition 7" single coming out next month. Oops!

Still worth a listen though.

Neil

There's the fabbo Taxi, Taxi!, but uh, I'm pretty sure they're signed, and their debut album is coming out soon.  But still, check it out, ace tunes.

NoSleep

Earth Sized Diamonds asked to be added to my friends and I like his music. I think he was little confused between my tastes and the people who want to be added to my friends generally. But he's defo unsigned AFAIK.

I like his top eight friends particularly.

pandadeath

The Young Meteors are pretty good. They're a local band, but don't sound much like one. www.myspace.com/youngmeteors

Also. My bands are good. LOLZ!

I'm visitor 666, haha, how freaky is that?

EDIT:  Also, I run a Pere Ubu last.fm group

Tom Tortoise

Not really. Just some of my music that I made for a joke that quickly wore thin.

TotalNightmare

This is a little biased as i know a few of the members of this band, but luckily, i never have to lie to them about me liking their music...

which is a relief, as i am a rotten liar...

either way, had i come across their music 'all by myself' i just know i would have liked them muchly.

Whatever that is worth... either way. Check out Santa Carla

go on...

Peking O

Earlier today I went on a My Space band page and not only did one of their songs start playing, a video (with audio) they'd uploaded to the site started playing simultaneously. Couple that with the fact that I was listening to itunes, and it was a right bleeding racket. I wish you had the option of turning these things on instead of immediately getting bombarded with them.

Yes I know. Grandad will be getting with "the program" henceforth.

The Culture Bunker

www.myspace.com/shimuracurves

Kate, from the band, used to be in a band called the Lollies, who I used to love. I might even have to break my two and a half year exile from London to go check them out sometime.

ozziechef

What would happen if all the Whores on the board 'adopted' a band - do you reckon CaB could make a band big? (Arctic Moneys style?)

Better if they really weren't that good, anyone up for some kind of guerrila campaign?

yeah, its a pain, especially when your used to tabbed browsing.   Ive become accustomed to hittting the 'Stop'  button as  soon as the html has had time to load. Which, if you time it right, will leave the page intact  and prevent whatever tasteless delights the creator had in mind from buffering.

I'd be up for this - you're talking to someone who once had a plan to promote a band who didn't even exist, just to see what happened - but I don't think this board really has much "reach", to be honest.  Even if every single forum member purchased a copy of our pet band's single, I doubt it would chart.  It might manage the fringes of the Top 75 if it's lucky, but that really doesn't take much these days.

Adopt us... me and ninestonecreature are in this band:

www.myspace.com/santacarlamusic

Coming soon to a divebar near you...

Well, if we're plugging:

http://www.myspace.com/Luxembourgband

I'd also check out

http://www.myspace.com/swimmerone, who are excellent and covered Cloudbusting the way Kate Bush should be covered (and before the Futureheads killed Hounds of Love).

My page does that, even though I set it not to play. For a long time it didn't play songs automatically and one day recently it decided to just ignore my wishes and I can't seem to do anything about it. I don't want my songs to play automatically, partly cos it's annoying for people, and also because it totally distorts the true number of plays I get, now I have no idea whether people are actually listening to my stuff or if they're just being forced to.

It's all about "word of mouth", we pick a band then all rave to our firends/colleagues/enemies - mention them on other boards - before we know it, it'd be so uncool not to like the band they'd be huuuge and every indie kid would be texting Jo Whiley to play it - she would go on about how she discovered this band. Then they would realise an album - everyone would buy it, realise it was shit and that would be it - the bassist would be on The Games before we knew it

Sod it then! If people are plugging, then so shall I!

These people are good and only signed to their owen label:

If you use FireFox or Mozilla, you should grab the FlashBlock plug-in. When activated it will prevent Flash animations or players from self launching. It works on myspace a treat.

http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

While you're at it, download AdBlock and make myspace (and the rest of the net) ad-free at the same time.

Aniasg

One of my favourite albums of the moment is by this guy.
He's also in a band called Our Small Capital (fronted by ex Astrid member Willie Campbell) and his sister Nicola provides vocals on a couple of Arab Strap tracks on their last album.

For fans of sufjan stevens and iron & wine especially.

Are they any cop? I thought Astrid's 'It's True' was a great little Teenage Fanclub-esque single.

Aniasg

Yup pretty good,  think they have an ep coming out soon, you can hear a few demos  here

My favourite tune so far has been his collaboration with the poet Kevin Macneil on a track called Local Man Ruins Everything (simpsons fans?)

I really enjoyed those, thanks! She's got an English Bull Terrier too. Fantastic.

Edit> That 'Take Some Drugs' track is fab too Daves. Great find!
