My mate plays bass and I still haven't seen them live!

hmm?

Portsmouth's most ubiquitous band there. I don't particularly like them yet I swear I know every lyric to question, answer (or something along those lines.)

rudi

Really?

How queer...

You must be the second Pompey person I've bumped in to on here.

And yes, it's Question:Answer; now I want to know how you know... :)

Portsmouth has bloody tons of supposedly "bankable" bands now, doesn't it?  Back when I lived there, it was wall to wall no-hopers.  Including my band.

Can't say I've been massively taken with any of the regional acts I've heard recently though.  I think I'd rather have Vex and Screeper back.

rudi

Screeper were great - aren't the autons them in a different guise?

But yeah - after years of no bands at all, the city has hit a reasonably rich vein, of which my favourites are Rolling Dog.

Strange Death of Liberal England
Fade Out
The Exits
The Ridgeway
The Autons
Carmon Rosa

are all attracting attention from elswhere (which is nice...).

I'm happy I only have to go 5 minutes to the Wedge to see something half decent rather than god knows where when I were a younger thing...

Right... THAT is the single best band name I've heard this month.  They'd better be amazing with a name like that.  God, five years ago nobody would have had the imagination to come up with a name like that in Pompey.  They were still working on trying not to make the lyrics monosyllabic (in the Virgin Soldiers case, certainly).

Erm... don't know what happened to the various members of Screeper, but I did remember hearing they moved on to another project.  I've lost touch with the Portsmouth music scene, really.  I'm very seldom in that neck of the woods these days, even though I lived there for seven years.

I really don't know. But yes, I am Straight Outta Copnor. SDoLE are alright, you know. This may be the most pathetic description of a band ever but they sound like half way through an Arcade Fire song. And it's good to see some good bands in Portsmouth, but they seem to be either in the angular indie cool gang or the dreadful, dreadful (scr)emo gang.

rudi

They'd probably agree.

After all, that IS what they sound like (I mean that in a good way).

They're quite decent. At least in my shitty opinion. Looks like jimmy jazz and I are as lazy as each other to make pathetic Arcade Fire comparisons ;)

And here's an mp3

rudi

Ooh, I think I was at that gig.

Anyhoo - Rolling Dog are headlining the WaterRats tonight (King's X) if Germany/Poland isn't too much af a draw for you....

(Uninteresting fact: although sounding and looking nowt like each other, the lead singers of the two aforementioned bands are brothers).

I'll be there, propping up the bar. :)

'The American Dollar'

Oh these are good. Ulrich Schnauss with a bit of guitar thrown in to seal the deal. Just awesome.

Think Sigur Ros/Mono/Explosions In The Sky too.

Don't know if they've been signed, but   The Martini Henry Rifles are here to listen.  They list a whole load of noise-rock bands as "sounds like" including Jesus Lizard, Brainiac, Girls Against Boys, Lightning Bolt, Les Savy Fav, Sonic Youth, Devo, Shellac, Liars, Q and Not U, (and also Husker Du & the Ramones).

Father Pumpkin

I saw the Martini Henry Rifles live at Clwb Ifor Bach a few years ago and they were fucking amazing.

that is all

there are and have been some amazing bands come out of that country.

They're named after a 1930s history book by George Dangerfield, I presume.  Bloody English / History students.

My Band - The guitar player likes Robin Trower and Frank Marino a lot, and you can't tell at all...

23 Daves

London hip-hop collective who include a couple of mates of mine:

Click on "This Is London" - they're a bit new, these fellas, but I find that track strangely addictive.

Gradual Decline

They have released stuff, but aren't actually signed in the traditional way. Which is of course now the shit way. Even Radiohead aren't doing the proper contract thing.

Sounds like a shit version of RatsCocks doing comedy lo-fi rap.  What's the appeal, Tables?

I saw these guys supporting the Mad Caddies in London a few weeks ago.  I witnessed some of the worst dancing I have ever seen...
