If I still had any Lego I'd kick all your arses.

Quote from: "I Am The Walrus"I used to do a Stand Up routine about lego. It went:

"I've rediscovered the joy of lego, it's amazing anything is your multicoloured bricked dream it's great!  (This goes on for a bout 20 more seconds) Oh god that is a bit sad isn't it? Maybe I need a girlfriend...have I got enough bricks though?"
I actually grinned at that.  If the rest of your material is that good, I reckon you won't do too badly as a stand-up.

Or perhaps I'm just easily pleased, although that seems unlikely, lately.

Quote from: "mothman"This is what you call a LEGO USS Enterprise!

Couldn't really have built that in 1973 though.

Go With The Flow

http://www.brickflick.com - A 'GTA game' trailer - made out of lego.

I was also was one who didn't read the instructions. Probably because I was too impatient to build it.

Jesus, some of that stuff it amazing.  Being a bit of a maths lover, I'm going to have to find out more about that Lego difference engine as it looks incredible.

A quick search for this guy's homepage

QuoteI am currently designing a third generation machine which has changes designed to vastly simplify its construction. This is done with an eye to making it easier for others to build their own Difference Engines using LEGO pieces.

Well, I don't have any other plans for the coming months

Holy Christ, here's a model of the stadium the World Cup final's going to be played in

That stuff's actually frightening me. I think you'd need the strength of an ox to turn the handle on that difference engine, mind, it must be superglued together.

Love the Han Solo in Carbonite...

Hee-hee, this thread has got me grinning like a loon!

Look at this everybody, you can download virtual Lego from the Lego website and then you can order the specific bricks to actually build what you've created! I'd've weed myself over this as a child.

Lego is, as far as I can tell, the number one reason for having children.

Quote from: "Ambient Sheep"Apparently they sell a tool now to separate them for you.
There's been a special tool to seperate them for years.  I had one about 12 years ago (maybe a bit more) during my lego days.

I was really into all the space stuff  like M-Tron, Blacktron and the space police people.  That was all fantastic.  There was a big Blacktron base with flashing lights that amazed me when I was young.

Then I got into The Aquanauts who had the BEST theme base I've ever seen.

One Christmas I got the Technic space shuttle complete with moving crane and satellite.  I spent days building it and eventually called my family through for a demonstration.  I opened the large doors on top, brought the crane and satellite out and revolved them round.  My pure excitement about this was slightly ruined when my auntie audibly said "is that it?"  I still hate her because of that.

Regarding this stickler vs creative thing, I had it both ways - I always made up my own stuff, but I used to take photos of them and pretend they were from a real catalogue. I remember these sets being elaborate and impressive, well up to the standard of the official sets, but I found some of the photos recently and they were actually shit - inconsistency of colour, bricks not fixed together properly, spare 'dots' showing, half-peeled off labels on the front of buildings rather than hidden round the back, plasticine employed to gum up gaps...a real Lego disgrace. I also painted the Fabuland crow white to create a new character called Colin Cockatoo. And that looked shit as well.

It's not about sticking to the instructions, Sticklers can be just as creative, it's just that they make stuff that it is in scale, realistic (relatively) and has the correct people in it. i.e. No pirates in space.

I hope you have a scanner, ELW10.

At my age, that's comparatively recent.  I haven't played with Lego properly for about 30 years...

Hehe, I only chose the inflammatory term 'creative' because the alternative 'Whatever' seemed a bit snooty to those who didn't follow instructions to the letter.

There must be a pleasing compromise between 'Whatever' and 'Creative'.

Quote from: "Frinky"Aw, the pics are dead and I didn't save them...

Quote from: "Frinky"In clearing out my old junk I came across a few old bits of Lego. It took me all of 20 seconds to realise that Lego is still The Ace... Within moments I'd designed the Frink Industries Rapid Response DropShip, this particular model being available to the Police, with slightly upgraded models available for, ahem, private uses. Let us see the prototype in action!

The front of our incredible craft! This unit features a single blaster cannon with tracking unit, mounted to the bow of the craft, just in front of the windows.
...

This rear shot shows the two 3/4-mount equipment racks, designed to hold Police Hover Bikes (Wheeled models shown), as well as the Frink Industries Hov-Me-Do Hover Engine. The "Lego" Flag appears incongruous now, but in the future, corperate sponsorship of the Police is an everyday reality.

...

The payload in this instance is designed for Police uses - however, models can be custom made to accommodate whatever machinery the discerning militant may require - including additional arms platforms!

...

There's not much space on board this ship - but this is no cruise liner! The Frink Industries RRD requires two crew - one Pilot who also doubles as a Gunner, and one Lookout/Technician, who has a special vantage point from the Crows Nest. The Technician helps with speedy unloading and deployment of the RRD's forces and vehicles. To match the payload of the vehicle, there are two of our finest Police Officers on board, ready to extinguish the fire of injustice! You go, boys!

...

Our RRD heads towards the troublespot, at a top speed of 3,000 Frinks Per Hour.

...

It's no time to lose when the RRD touches down! The officers jump off, exiting via the Frink Industries Door (TM), while the pilot keeps a lookout. Meanwhile, Ms Technician unloads the Bikes. Be careful there, Missy - You don't want to break a nail!

...

Due to it's nature, the RRD is a lightly armed Recon craft - so it must flee the area should it come under any fire...

...

...not that they will in this case - it looks like our boys will keep this island well under control!

...

Good job, crew!

I found that, in the absense of photos, just as enjoyable, if not more. Like the radio. Coming up with my own mental images of your lego ship.

Lego's brilliant isnt it? I spent most of Princess Diana's funeral building a Lego Millenium Falcon.

I built a lot of my own Star Wars vehicles and buildings. Then Lego brought out official ones full of horrible specially designed bricks and colours. Uggh...

RFT

Ah, listen to the lot of you.

Lego is still great.

yes there are more "specialist" parts. but even they usually end up getting taken and used as somethign entirely different. They sold a Fokker DR.1 triplane a while back that used pirate ship parts as an engine cowling, for instance.

plus, they've brough back a lot of more generic sets that are just a box of basic bricks and a set of instructions.

I've been (relatively) unashamedly enjoying lego again since about 1999- and a lot of the sets that have come out since then are easliy the equal of the old stuff. the 2001 (set number 8466) technic 4x4 Off Roader  and 2003 JCB (8455) are among the best technic sets I've ever seen. the JCB is a complete pnuematics-fest.

The current Ferrari range is pretty good as well. All generic parts, but they've managed to do a convicing minifig-scale F1 car (in various sets, of which 8654 is the best), and a nice pair of road cars- an enzo (8652) and F430 (8671)

a mate of mine converted his 8652 enzo into a transformer using parts from the mecha stuff they do. very impressive.

Suddenly I've got an urge to build this..
