It's a sub-par film only notable/notorious for its real on-screen killings of animals. There's some nude people and some rape/sex scenes in it too.

The girl-pole is the most memorable bit.

I enjoyed the (UK cut version of the) film and think it is definitely worth searching out for fans of horror films, people who like to imbue films with deeper meanings that aren't there and people who though the Blair Witch Project could have been a lot better.

It's another of those innit, one to tick off the list, like Driller Killer or I Spit On Your Gravy, or 120 Days of Sod'em, only without that last one's pseudo-artistic-intellectual cachet.  I dunno though, maybe I just like horror films to be funny and dumb rather than just out-and-out grim.

To get the proper effect you should really watch it on an iffy bootleg tape on a dodgy Betamax at the age of eighteen, afterhours in a rough biker pub with your mad girlfriend and a middle-aged art and design lecturer wearing pink trousers who's trying to pinch her off you. I remember being traumatised by that more than the film.

One of the few video nasties that I've seen - on a really dodgy pirate video way back in the 1990s. It is more graphic and nasty than Driller Killer, Salo or Texas Chainsaw, although Salo is probably more disturbing.

The special effects are very realistic - I believe that one of the real-life filmmakers was taken to court in Italy over suspicions that it was a "snuff" movie (this may be an urban legend). The animal abuse IS real, however, and it isn't pleasant seeing a real animal getting killed for entertainment purposes.

[Is eating meat a form of "entertainment"? Millions of animals are killed for food every day, but eating meat is usually a lifestyle choice, rather than a necessity. It's also worth noting that real animals are slaughtered in more mainstream films e.g. the end of Apocalypes Now]

The actual concept behind the film is great - expolorers find video footage from a previous expeditition into the rainforest. This video footage then makes up the majority of the film. As well as the expected cannibalism and grim finale, the film also shows the explorers killing, raping and torturing the natives, killing animals and various barbaric tribal practices, including primitive abortions. In a word: GRIM.

As an interesting side-note, the soundtrack is quite desirable amongst collectors of the arcane. It includes incongrous B-Movie love music that plays over some flashback sequences of a couple making out on the beach. Weird! There are also these crazy bleeps that don't let up for the duration of the film. These sounds are quite effective in putting the beejesus up yer - you just know some hardcore cannibal action is just around the corner!

So, yeah, if you want to get grossed-out, watch this film. Personally I don't like these kind of films, so be prepared for the nastiness. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a first date.

I spent my youth being close to obsesessed at tracking down these type of movies and this was definitely one of the most graphic and of course the one that spawned all those other similarly themed but rather sub-par offerings (like Cannibal Ferox, Mountain Of The Cannibal God etc).I've seen both the cut and uncut versions and unfortunately the cut version i saw (this one ) is cut to ribbons, i don't particularly want to see animals slaughtered either (although i believe the natives ate them afterwards which makes it a bit less shocking, like how the bull being killed in Apocalypse Now was part of a native ceremony that Coppola decided to film), but there's several other bits missing which are very obviously absent by bad edits, jumps in the underscore etc.

Um, yeah, it's not bad.I could listen to the opening music all day.

Did you catch last weeks 'snuff' episode of that porn programme then Adina? It's certainly worth a look yes, Verbwhore oldboy 'King Mob' turned me onto it back in the days when blair witch was still a hot topic - he claimed the blair witch posse had simply ripped it off - there are some similarities.

It is a good film when compared to some of the other notorious ones and despite everything actually has a viable message at its core.

Is it a case of if you like Cannibals, and you like Feroxes, then you'll love Cannibal Ferox?

Great film actually, although the animal death scenes don't add anything. The turtle one is particularly nasty, though you'd have to get the (banned) uncut version to see it.

Sequel out this year, apparently.

The scene in Fulci's Zombie when the zombie fights the shark underwater is one of my fave horror moments, particularly with that music. As for the Cannibals, well they're a bit shite really. UK censorship drove everyone's interest in them ironically!

Oooh, away with you Pinny, cannibals have a very definate place in Italian horror history. It just they seem less good again the miriad of great zombie films and the fantastic stabbing deaths.

They are on a par with the "rape and then revenge on the naughty rapers" films in terms of their place in horror. They are all right, but really are a little bit rubbish.

Everyone should watch the Mondo films if they want to see harsh Africa.

I find the first film very unsettling, even though lots of the gore lots "all red paint-ish" and it's oddly camp. Apparently this film was the first coined as 'grindhouse'. That might not be true though.
