They have? I'd not known it was even possible to play video in Flash until Google Video popped up.

Marv Orange

hmm personally i believe its the  that fact that broadband has come down in price and is more widely available.

Flash has beingused for videos for a while.  But its only recently that the people could afford broadband outside LOL NO USA or Sweden.

Hmm, I don't know about that. I've had broadband for nearly 5 years now. It was 0.5mb broadband for about four of those years, but that's enough to watch streaming video with isn't it? But bandwidth probably is the issue though, just on their side rather than ours. I'd imagine the costs of the kind of bandwidth needed for streaming video would have been prohibitive until quite recently. Surely someone has already said that in this thread but I've just been too lazy to check. I'm going to click submit anyway, perhaps I'll add an "edit:" afterwards if I can be bothered.

According to Forbes, the monthly YouTube bandwith cost is soon to reach $1million. It also states that they transfer 200 terabytes of data per day!

Awesome! I've been wanting to watch this for ages. Thanks!

lazyhour

Bah, Pekar was fucking useless there!  By the time he got his brain in gear to actually reach the part of the sentence which had any content at all (beyond "I wanna ask you... I wanna say.... be nice to me... David, David, come awn....") Letterman had been given enough time to come up with retorts and stuff.  Jeez, Harvey, you really let yourself down.  I guess it's no wonder that wasn't on the American Splendor DVD.

nomegusta

Wow. What was Pekar so pissed off about, by the way?

Aren't their snippets of the footage in American Splendor? I thought I remembered Pekar going off on one on air in the film and then being told never to come back..?

lazyhour

Is it not all just re-enactments in the movie?  I haven't seen it for ages, so I might rewatch it tonight.

Yeah it is. In the movie,Pekar comes across as the antagonistic one and Dave(or the guy playing Dave)just says something like "Guess who won't be coming back next week?" or words to that effect.

I'm glad someone wiped that smug grin of that twat Letterman's face. I've never liked him.

Ah yeah your right, it is all reenactments. I thought they might have shown Giamatti about to walk on stage and then showed the real clip or something. I haven't seen it for ages as well - I think Pekar only shows up near the end as he's talking into the camera (and the actors are mulling about in the background).

They show the first apearence(when he is plugging his dolls, made out of his old clothing)but that's it.

It's about time I re-watched it myself. I don't know why,but I find it moving and uplifting in a way most "oscar worthy" films aren't.

Quote from: "nomegusta"Wow. What was Pekar so pissed off about, by the way?

He had objections with General Electric (they call it G.E in the interview) who own NBC and he wanted to talk about them but Letterman just stiffles him and calls him a 'Dork' instead. There is an infuriating "Right On!" applause from the audience.

I don't know what the specific objections are, but I can only imagine they were entirely valid. Shame Letterman was such a pussy.

lazyhour

Rewatched American Splendor last night (with the final 25 minutes still to watch) and it's not quite as good as I remembered it, but still very very good.  I think Paul Giamatti has ruined all his other work for me by his turn in the fucking shitting shit waste of time piece of shit exercise in tedium film Sideways.

American Splendor shows clips from two of Pekar's actual appearances on Letterman, but has a re-enactment for the G.E. appearance.  it's also massively different from the real YouTube clip.  I can't believe there were two different occasions where Pekar went on Letterman and fucked shit up, so I guess my conclusion is 'artistic licence'.  For a start, he actually managed to complete at least one train of thought on the movie re-enactment.

Youtube is such a wierd revolution. I can see music videos not only from my early years (1990s) from the UK but also India! in my native Tamil, this is truly revolutionary stuff. Proper globalization, since you can experience so many time frames of other peoples lives.

The possibilities are endless as quality and bandwidth increases, at the moment its a bit like watching porn on old kazza, edonkey for the first time. There is just too much good stuff to post on here, i'll try and see if I can compile a list of my favourites.

Am I misremembering or is it also GE that (the character) Cheryl David protests about in CYE?

Edit: Oh bugger, now you've done it waspy. I hadn't even thought of looking up old music videos. Now I'm going to be there all day. Does anyone remember the link for that download tool web page thingy that lets you nab the videos?

Ciarán2

I just searched for "Top of the pops" on YouTube and spent a while watching an early performance there by Dannii Minogue, Legs and Co ripping up pieces of paper while Orange Juice perform "Rip It Up" and Depeche Mode pretending to play real instruments during "Everything Counts". YouTube is, indeed, a revolution.

Yeah, I think your right, second series, The Poker Game, when they ask why don't they take the sitcom pitch to NBC she says something about G.E and pollution.

I wonder if that was a slight grievance of Larry David's which he handed to the Cheryl character, I remember him recently doing a bit of stand-up for a Hollywood Environmental-support Gala.

..heh, I quite liked the look of that. The only problem with YouTube is how much it mangles your video files.

Also, do YouTube do that "once uploaded, we own it" thingy that lots of people do?

But at least I now know how to say 'I'll fuck you til you love me faggot" in French

Could someone watch this and confirm that it's really as horrible as it seems to be? As far as I can tell, it's an American band called "The Tossers" pretending to be Irish on the "St. Patty's day" (eurgh) edition of some show.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tQcF8samisk&search=tossers

You can see how I found it by looking at the search term I used. Yes, I was searching for "tossers" on youtube. What's wrong with that?
