I imagined therefore that I'd appreciate The Roots but 'twas not meant to be, I always found them boring apart from that single The Seed (is it their most 'famous' song?),

The Seed was orignally a Cody Chesnut track from The Headphone masterpiece album. He is the guy who sings on The Roots version.

The headphone masterpiece has one track that has the lyric "I've got a dick with a curve and thats all you deserve'. Had to mention that.

If you haven't heard the 'things fall apart' album by the roots you might want to try it. Failing that listen to the Cody Chesnutt album something for everyone on that.

I'm surpised though that none of the Roots Maunva albums have appeared in anyones top ten hip hop list.

Quote from: "The Boston Crab"More recently Madvillainy has been the only hip-hop album to have captured my imagination and I think it's the 'best' hip-hop album I've ever heard, the production, wordplay, imagination and humour keep me coming back for more and I'm always finding new little touches, it's just so rich without being stodgy and has its own definite feel unlike a lot of music these days.

It's one that really needs to be heard as an album too. When it came out I was raving about it and I was trying to choose a couple of tracks to rip from it, but it's hard to do because every track is so short and there's virtually no hooks across the entire thing, 'cept maybe 'Fancy Clown'. I really love it though, my favourite of 2004 and one of those ones I know I'll be spinning ten years from now.

Heh, on a similar topic, rather than trying to do a genre list, here's a cheatingly narrow list of Top Ten Albums That Feature A Guest Vocal Appearance By MF Doom:

1. Quasimoto - 'The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas'
2. Prefuse 73 - 'Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives'
3. Dabrye - 'Two/Three'
4. De La Soul - 'The Grind Date'
5. Gorillaz - 'Demon Days'
6. Fog - 'Fog'
7. Daedelus - 'Exquisite Corpse'
8. The Herbaliser - 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'
9. Prince Po - 'The Slickness'
10. Wale Oyejide - 'One Day...Everything Changed'

I was always quite fond of the way he sings 'Sexy bitches that I fuck with my big black pen-us/Think that I'm a motherfuckin' musical genius'.

Ciarán: I'm not much of a Lovers Rock fan if I'm honest. So much so that I don't have much of a clue of who's who and what's good or not. I can say though,  that Barrington Levy's late 70s/early 80s output is excellent; recorded very much (in that era at least) in a LR style, but featuring LR and "concious" lyrics. Other names I should mention are Beres Hamond, Freddie McGregor, Winston Reedy, Dennis Brown and Luciano (who I'm seeing on the 1st of August at the Jazz Cafe). I've never heard any of the (apparently amazing) female singers, but I've heard great things about two of the pioneers Carroll Thompson and Janet Kay.

Sorry I can't be much help, but as I said, Lovers Rock isn't my "thing". It would probably be well worth Wiki and/or Googling for some of the mid/late 70s English LR stars, as these were the "creators" of the sound and style. Let me know if you find some great stuff though as I'm not averse dipping my toe in (hence the Barrington Levy and Luciano shouts).

LeboviciAB84

Amen to Barrington Levy. I got into him through my dad's colleagues, who thought it was really funny to give him a Barrington Levy record every Christmas, simply because my dad is called Barry Levy. No relation, though. (Or, indeed, to Lord Levy. My uncle went to school with him and says he was a proper twunt even then.)

Ciarán2

Thanks Joy, I do like Janet Kay's "Silly Games", not sure it'll be easy to track her stuff down but I'll see what I can come up with. There's a reggae shop in Dublin I've been meaning to check out for a while, but I expect they're mostly into dub. Anyway, I'll let you know if I uncover anything good. :-)

Quote from: "The Plaque Goblin"Flaming Pie's THAT good? Really? Interesting.

IMO, aye. Coming off the back of the Anthology, Paul remembered he was a Beatle, and made an album of almost Beatles quality.

And lazyhour – haven't heard Ram as yet. Shame indeed, but... well, there's a lot of it about.

Picked up 36 Chambers today for £5 in HMV...

Good album, yes, but I wouldn't put it at number 1. I think once you hear Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde, you'll agree that it's a better album as the style is very much the same but just a lot more focused and.. well, less pretentiously "gangsta".

phantom_power

Top Ten Children's songs IMO:

2 We All Stand Together – Paul McCartney
3 Visit The Moon – Jim Henson (?)
4 Hole In The Ground – Bernard Cribbins
5 Teddy Bear's Picnic – Henry Hall

7 Morningtown Ride – The Seekers
8 Yellow Submarine – The Beatles
9 Two Little Boys – Rolf Harris
10 My Brother– Terry Scott

Yes, I've avoided Disney songs. Can of worms.

Great list Jemble.

I've still not checked out Bizarre Ride Devlin but I will do. I must add though that I don't think 36 Chambers is the 'best' hip-hop album ever but just the one I got the most pleasure from. I think the 'best' I've heard is Madvillainy or Endtroducing but I'm applying different criteria there. Actually, I ended up downloading Liquid Swords (GZA) and Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx (Raekwon) following the Wu theme and they're both still excellent, Liquid Swords is even better than I remember it.

Yes thats 11 albums!
I thought hard about this list, it was painful leaving out Cannibal Ox, The Roots, Slick Rick and especially De La Soul and Outkast two of my most favourite groups ever. Both have more impressive careers than many listed their especially Nas, EMINEM and Cube. However I could not drop either of those three simply because their albums despite the controversial material {Cube and EMINEM more so than NAS} captured three rappers at a  lyrical peak that none have came close to matching. Cube on fire is an incredbile sound however since the Predator he's specialised in making ordinary music and films. He can at least  look back in 20 years and say he was responsible for at least thee magnificent albums, NAS only had one in Illmatic, forget the hype, everything that has followed has being disappointing yes their has being moments of brilliance but that's all.

A  lot of people bang on about the fact that their has not being a classic hip hop album in the last five years and you know what they're right. I was thinking about including stuff from Jay Z, Sage Francis, Blackalicious,Edan,Doom Common, Roots Manuva,The Roots The Coup, but despite releasing quality albums I just could not call them classic for different reasons.

Al Tha Funkee Homosapien

Ah Josh, where did it all go wrong-ish. Kyuss were great, the first two QOTSA albums were great and Desert Sessions have lead to some good songs, but the last two QOFSTA albums and EODM? Load a pish.

5. QOTSA - QOTSA (self titled)

Is this album deleted these days?  I've been looking around for it in major record stores all over, but it's never in stock.  [Yes, I know it's easily gettable from various places on the net...]

Al Tha Funkee Homosapien

I wouldn't have thought so. It's on a reasonably big independent record label (Roadrunner Records) and I'm pretty sure I've seen it around recently whilst I was browsing.

He only plays the drums in EoDM.

The Plaque Goblin

If I were in a band and we produced an album like 'Lullabies To Paralyze' I would be extremely pleased. Taken on it's own terms it's a top quality piece of work.

The self-titled first one is too samey and 'Rated R' is too all over the place (but both still brilliant). 'Songs For The Deaf' is the pinnacle.

Anybody up for a stoner rock list?

As good as they are, what's with all the hip-hop lists? It's not as if Stereo Excursions is stuffed full with threads about the subject.

Quote from: "thewomb"Spooks - S.I.O.S.I.S.

Man, there's a group that kinda disappeared. I thought they'd go on to be massive after the success of 'Karma Hotel' and 'Things I've Seen' but by the time of the second album no-one gave a shit. Which is a shame, they could have been big like Fergie-era Black Eyed Peas, only good.
