It's not right is it?

anyway, I remember this from an ancient episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks - back in the days when they had the "freeze Frame" round

Rather splendid remix of Busta Rhyme's 'Touch It' at the BET awards (1:50 in) , with Missy, Rah Digga, Mary J. Blige, Lloyd Banks and the return of Eminem, fresh from re-hab and divorce. It's a bit old now, but the crowd goes nuts and I enjoyed it.

James- Sit Down - Original 1989 Rough Trade version.

Much less 'anthemic' in terms of production- the sound is really clean. I'm not sure quite which version this is in the dozens they've done but its one of the early ones.

I'm sure they'd probably cringe watching their earnest selves on that video, but the song at that point was honest and dare I say it, touching.

See for yourselves I guess...

I uploaded this vid!  :)  It's taken from "Indie Top 20 Volume 2" video - and yes, it is the very, very first original version.  The song was originally written in late 1988 by James' last four-piece line-up (Booth, Gott, Glennie and Whelan).  Following 1988's "Ya Ho" tour (recorded on the "One Man Clapping" album) drummer Gavan Whelan left after a massive argument with Booth.  The following spring this original "Sit Down" was recorded with new drummer David Bayton-Powe, and pianist Saul Davies, and released on 7", 12" and 3" CD.  It's never been re-released since in its original form.

The 1991 version (this time recorded by the seven-piece baggy era line-up) was remixed in 1998 by Apollo 440, so three single versions of "Sit Down" have appeared - 1989, 1991 and 1998.  Also (confusingly) an EP was released in 1985 called "Sit Down - 3 Songs By James", which featured the following tracks: Chainmail, Hup Spings, and Uprising - but NOT "Sit Down".  The title actually referred to the cover drawing of a man sitting on a bench.  This 12" EP has often, erroneously, led people to think "Sit Down" has been released 4 times, rather than 3.

Anyway, that's my info!

Good on you. It's cracking. I haven't heard Chainmail and the Hup Springs video is the first time I've ever heard that. I've heard the early Sit Down on tape but I hadn't heard that recorded version.

Annoying because I've* got a tape with stuff like Discipline, Wonderful, What's The World and other really early stuff.

One to divide, even among hardcore hip-hop fans. I think it's great however.

Good ol' Busta. Still a shame he's gone thug rather than staying true to his roots, but I guess that's how it goes. The new album was his best in years though.

Microdisney - Singers Hampsted Home. Love this song. Wirtten about their then label mate Boy George when he was having problems with people dying in his home, heroin etc.

I often wonder why Microdisney didn't break through. Watching this, it might be because of  Cathal Coughlin's slightly strange and confrontational stage presence.

Some live MBV for you:

Cigarette in Your Bed (live London ULU, 1990)

Emptiness Inside (London ULU, 1990)

I've been on an MBV trip again lately, having just got hold of a proper CD copy of the "Tremolo" EP.

What's Kevin Shields up to these days?

I trawled YouTube recently for Screaming Trees stuff, in the hope that the Mark Lanegan and Van Conner interview from Reading '92 would be there - it was broadcast on the late night TV show Raw Power at the beginning of September that year...  Does anyone know where I might be able to track it down.  My old VHS is nearly unwatchable now.

Captain Crunch

I was looking for the clip of Michael Stipe on Frank Skinner, I didn't find it but I did come across this:

Your Ghost - Kristin Hersh & Michael Stipe

It's been years since I heard that, I forgot how beautiful it was.  Their voices just fit perfectly, did they do anything else together?

Last I heard, he was producing The Go! Team's new album. I'm hoping this'll be something worthwhile instead of all those lazy remixes.

It does sometimes sound as if the guitarist and bassist in Porno for Pyros had been told to play  like Eric and Dave  from Jane's, so I suppose there may be one or two recycled musical ideas in there, but I think they were still a very original group. I saw that on the Jools Holland 'Later louder' DVD and I thought they made just about everyone else on there look like lazy, unimaginitive gits with zero stage presence. Nope, sorry, you're wrong, not as good as JA, but definitely not tat.

Another MBV live video I found:

I Only Said (live)

Sound's iffy but given how loud they were, I guess that's expected.

And, just because I can:

Best track on "This is my Truth..." by far.

Thanks Brutus, that was a cracking performance. I've never seen them live, and I always regret not seeing the classic line-up. Live+Cuddly is fucking amazing!

Yeah, that's beautiful, and I haven't heard it in ages. Isn't it about a dead lover? I thought they sang "I dreamed last night..."

Is page 7 of this thread giving anybody the bother it's giving me?
Page 7

Possibly a Firefox 2.0.0.1 and/or plugin issue, but when the page loads everything starts bouncing around when I scroll so far down the page. Looks like Paranormalhandy's embedded links causing it here... All the rest are loding an image fine.

??

Edit: No problem here using IE7, and no problem with Firefox trying other pages with embedded youtube links. Strange, that.

Edit2: I'm assuming nobody else has had any bother and that they're out having festive fun anyway. Still.... for some reason it seems a JRE update has stopped Paranormalhandy's flashing links even though page 7 is still making any other open tabs uselessly unresponsive until page 7 can be persuaded to close.  A confirmation or denial of similar hassles would be appreciated.

Why has all footage of Jarvis Cocker heckling Michael Jackson at the Brits suddenly been removed? Jacko's lawyers?

If that's the case, then personally I feel offended that the nauseating video for the song itself has been allowed to stay.
