Hmmm..part of me wants to shake Jack Straw very thoroughly to knock the idiot out of him. The other part thinks that I wouldn't like to debate with someone where I can't see the whole of their face.

He put himself in a position to allow his concerns to be misplaced anyway. Isn't that a bit foolish? He's already said that all women he has asked to remove their veils have done so freely.

I used to work on reception for the DSS, and there was a community relations woman I had to deal with who was always fully veiled.  The trouble was, she was also rather quiet with her approaches to the desk, so sometimes I'd be typing away only to look up and see a pair of eyes staring at me behind a veil.  It put the shits up me each and every single time.

The trouble is, Western society sees veils as being "sinister" because their origins are often less than positive - it's taken as being concealment for negative ends. I'll admit, my brain's first thought for a split second was always "Masked madman!  Sound the emergency alarms!"

I accept this might say more about me than the practice of wearing veils, however.

I dunno, it probably says something about the way that IRA men wearing balaclavas is quite a powerful image in the UK.

Does anyone have a problem with people who wear those veils that just cover the hair and round the head, while leaving the face visible? I think I find myself a bit uneasy around such people, mainly because it makes obvious the fact that they're religious. I find myself getting uncomfortable when talking to priests and nuns for the same reason, I'm just so non-religious and I'm afraid that my ungodly ways will offend them.
