Quote from: "Sun Tzu"So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

I was going to put this in GD, but as Mr Tzu (above) reminds us - war is an art.  It'll also get lost in General Discussion.  Anyway, I noticed this game elsewhere, and after a couple of hours on Civ IV last night, thought it might be a good thing to try here.  Yeah, I know it's hardly the same thing, but...you know.

Right.  Anyone up for a game of  Diplomacy?

I'll be adjudicator, and we need seven 'Whores to sign up.  As a warning, it might go on for a couple of months, just so you know.  Probably one turn a week, but we can play with that if it's going too slow.  Countries/empires to be allocated randomly.  We can use this thread for your disinformation and posturing, with all the sneaky horse trading co-ordinated through PM.  I'll post and update the map regularly.

Should I mention that I've never played this before and am still a bit unsure of the rules?  Hmmm.  Ah well, we can learn together baby.  Now get oiled up, and join me in 1900 Europe.

This was the most helpful link. There's quite a bit to learn so I might sit this one out.

I downloaded a really good applet which you can use to automatically have your rules written out.

http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/JavaDip/index.html This will at least allow you to draw the map and take screenshots to email out.

http://www.diplom.org/index.py Some great resources here.

http://www.diplom.org/Online/mapsoftware.html Software here.  Diptool, or Diplomacy Game Manager, may be the best.

Bagsy not Italy.

I have one pal who will definately want to play if we're a little short.

The most important thing in terms of game dynamics is that armies and fleets don't win by you rolling a dice but by attack with support that is greater than the defence.

I.e. An army in France attacks with support from an army next to it an opposing army in Germany.  France wins.

Second, you don't destroy armies and fleets, you just push them back.  You have so many black dots on territories.  Being the last to control those territories gives you armies and fleets to place.  At the end of each year you count up your black dots and if you don't have enough, you have to take the appropriate no. of armies of the map.

Third - you each give your orders which are then played out simulteneously at the end of the turn.  Hence the need for an adjudicator to work out when orders clash.

I've never played before but I'd happily give it a bash, so to speak.

Nice one - there's a good link below.

I don't think it's that complicated S?S!  You'll pick it up.  Don't make me do the Mrs Doyle thing.

Marvin

Cheers for that link. It looks fun so I'll definitely be 'in'.

I've been having a read through the various links provided, and this seems pretty interesting, so I would like to join in.
