Ah just one more, you can't miss this,  King Oliver's "Doctor Jazz" as covered by Jelly Roll Morton.

The Peruna Jazzmen:

I can't stop watching this.

Michael Brecker Band playing the amusingly mistitled "Chocies" (Choices) in 1987 with Mike Stern, Joey Calderazzo, Jeff Andrews and Adam Nussbaum. Probably the only person you'll hear playing an electronic wind instrument so authentically, who (for those who haven't seen my many other posts, including possibly the last one I made to this thread) died on January 13th.

Dusty Gozongas

Oh wow, this is the sort of find that makes my day, as I'm a MASSIVE fan of "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" in all it's many and various forms.  Was on YouTube watching those Peruna Jazzmen clips again (links just a few posts up), and noticed this in the sidebar of one!

Eva Taylor, born Irene Gibbons, she was a grand lady with a sweet voice, (The Dixie Nightingale). She was married to Clarence Williams and made a lot of records with His Band in the 1920´ s She retired in the 40´s but travelled in Denmark and Sweden 1974 1975 1976. Recorded with Maggie´s Blue Five and Peruna Jazzmen. She also gave a lot of Concerts with them. She died in 1977

As a bonus, and as it ties in so very neatly, here's an mp3 of my fave version, kindly supplied by ApexJazz:

Clarence Williams Short Five - I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate

Does anyone know anything about the Peruna Jazzmen?!  I'm even more determined to check em out now, as they've supplied some of the best YouTube clips I've seen.

Two more:

Sugar Blues:

There are more, too, check this profile. Peruna Jazzmen site is here

Oh also, was going to mention this when I bump the Jazz Thread later, but seems daft not to put it in here too.  I was watching the Jazz 625 shows again that lfbarfe kindly encoded, and was very taken with the performance of Isfahan in the (marvellous) Duke Ellington show.  I've cut it out to share on YouTube, partly so I can keep it handy.  Have also done the equally beautiful African Flower (Fleurette Africaine) and will post that later on.  Anyway, startlingly lovely performance this, very emotive and expressive playing by Johnny Hodges.  Thanks again to lfbarfe for the original encode (Demonoid, if yer interested).

Here's also an mp3 from the Far East Suite album:

Tim Berne's "Hong Kong Sad Song" performed on Night Music with David Sanborn, Joey Baron and a few others I don't know the names of.

John Zorn's Electric Masada playing "Tekufah" - this one's inspired...

Neil

Just put the link to the page, Devlin, then either put
round it, or highlight it and press the YouTube button (in the normal reply page, rather than the quick reply form).

EDIT: Ah, I guess you know this as you did it in your previous posts.,  Well then, just to point out that code won't work (as you can see) as it's html-based, and that stuff is mostly filtered out for security reasons.

Neil

That jazz argument vid is really great, thanks for that.

Hot Antic Jazz Band - That Rhythm Man

Neil

Here's two ApexJazz sent me yesterday, I woke up with this one in my head this morning, it's so catchy.  I'm a real sucker for fast jazz like this.  Love the dancing too.

Cab Calloway - Reefer Man

And this is just flat-out amazing!  In fact, I've got to check for more Nicholas Brothers vids while I remember.

Cab Calloway with the Nicholas Brothers - (Hep! Hep!) the Jumpin' Jive

Neil

Awesomeness, love the performance of Don't Get Around Much Anymore in particular, Johnny Hodges' tone kills me.

Caravan!

Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges again, Black Butterfly:

Was looking for versions of Cherokee and found this gem, John McLaughlin on The Tonight Show:

Roy Eldridge - Sunday

Bud Powell - Anthropology:

Bud Powell - Get Happy:

Sidney Bechet - Down By The Old Millstream:

QuoteJohn McLaughlin on The Tonight Show

Wow, what a find.

Amazing isn't it - as recently as 1985, someone like McLaughlin could come onto The Tonight Show and perform a track that wasn't taken from an album or promoting anything other than a concert and just perform for the sake of it. Long gone days.

Lfbarfe

Happy, happy, joy, joy. That McLaughlin clip has got me grinning like an idiot. So many notes, but each one has a reason to be there.  Cherokee's a bastard of a tune - a bass player I sometimes work with refers to it in terms normally reserved for Scott's Antarctic mission ("We lost 9 men on the middle eight of Cherokee").

Lfbarfe

It's the wrong thread, and it's almost more easy listening than jazz, but here's Ted Heath's Decca Phase 4 Stereo version of 'Cherokee' from 1962. All nicely ping-ponged, until the corking Tubby Hayes solo.

Sheldon Finklestein

Aw, thanks so much for those Cab Calloway videos, Neil. They're utterly superb. I'd only ever encountered him with 'Minnie The Moocher' being featured in the Jeeves And Wooster series with Fry and Laurie, but now I'm definately going to make an effort to seek out more of his stuff. Cheers.

Neil

Thanks lfbarfe, grabbing that now!

Sheldon, I can't remember the Fry and Laurie bit, but perhaps then you haven't seen his appearance in Betty Boop.  It's amazing, he's rotoscoped I think...really impressive.

Sadly I've not been able to find an audio version of Reefer Man as fast as that one, so will likely just have to rip the audio.  I think ApexJazz is tracking me down some other artists' versions, though.

Have to mention this chap I found last night when looking for Bechet clips.  He seems to have quite a stash!  Looking forward to working through them.  Ooh, he's got Dutch Swing College Band vids, I LOVE stuff like this (bit wobbly, but perfect sound):

Mob Bunkhaus

Jazz-rock, but close enough. A ferocious live version of Do it Again from '73.

Sam

This is fucking phenomenal:

Phineas Newborn Jnr:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzX2S3rfJ_Q

A massively under-rated pianist, easily the equal of Oscar Peterson and at times almost reaching the heights of Tatum. Yes, he's that good.

Lfbarfe

Mainly for apexjazz, but you should get something from this too, Neil. Al Cohn and Zoot Sims in 1968 with Stan Tracey's trio - Dave Green on bass, Phil Seamen on drums.

An old favourite

Both probably old news on here, haven't checked. The Miles Davis has five more parts. Part 2 has some great Chick Corea keyboard work

Lfbarfe

Superb stuff. I think I'm in the middle of downloading that whole Weather Report show from Demonoid. I take it you've seen the Jaco big band stuff, Don? The Chicken never fails to get me foot-tapping.

Words fail me. Just soak it up. Erskine is practically dancing on those drums.

Don_Preston

No I haven't, I'll have to check it out. I'm very new to Weather Report, getting Live in japan at the weekend.

My Dad's more of a Jaco fan, but only a casual one at that really.

Sovereign

Dunno if this is the right place for it, I'm really into old 40's and 50's Jazz but I'm not into much post Miles Davis to be honest, but I just seen it and my god its special.

Lfbarfe

This being the YouTube jazz thread, I can't think of anywhere better for that clip. It's jazz, and it's on YouTube. Cheers for sharing it.

NoSleep

That Fleischer Brothers cartoon not only has Cab Calloway singing, but the ghost has been Rotoscoped from footage of his dancing as well.
