Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie demonstrates both the half-time shuffle and the most infectious laugh I've heard in a long time.

Indeed, Benard is great (charges $3 for an autograph though :-0 ).

Here's the most musical drummer alive today: (imo etc..)

Fabbp Ten Gonella trumpet solo here, would love a better version of this, have already ripped the Ted Weems cover on the front page to mp3...god, it's amazing:

More Nat Gonella, you get a great view of his weird off-center embouchure at the start of this:

Ooh, a new Sister Kate for my collection, and it's a CRACKER.  Oooh Baby Dodds on drums, I LOVE his blocks on Jelly's stuff.

Oh, MAN!  Thanks to ApexJazz I finally got to see a Jimmie Lunceford performance, I'd been periodically checking for him on YouTube to no avail:

Worth sticking this up as well, another vid with just stills, but absolutely one of his greatest numbers.  White Heat from 1933, don't miss this!

Good grief, a new name for me to chase up - this is posted as a response to White Heat, absolutely thunderous.  Bert Ambrose - Message From Mars.  AWRIGHT!

Ha ha, I didn't know that. What does he write, "You done it. You done bought the hitman's signature"?

Some lovely piano on Crooked Creek, too.

Oh, this is a Youtube thread, isn't it?

So, if we're nominating greatest young drummers, can I put in a word for Nat Townsley?

I've made you all aware of the studio recording of this before now, but I've never found video evidence until it came up in a recent thing on German TV. So here it is. John Pizzarelli cutting a rug on 'Avalon':

L'Olympia, 1971. Solos from both Collins brothers, Fred Wesley and, on the Hammond, JB himself. Footage from the concert that became the 'Love Power Peace' album.

Excellent JB clip. I can't help remembering, after hearing James' organ solo there, Fred Wesley's recollection from his time in the JB's (whenever James' moved toward the organ):"Oh no! He's gonna try and play!".

#73
Ha ha, another fine for laughing so much he missed his cue? Would you be the one to say, "Maybe you can lay out on this one, Boss"?

Some more from the Collins boys.

Bootsy , on drums not bass though, and Catfish's rhythm guitar on Parliament's 'Flashlight'.

Edit: Bootsy plays drums on the album version, but it's not him here.

I've been playing the Peddlers' 'On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)' to death on CaB radio. Here's some down-home Hammond groove on Elmer Bernstein and Hal David's 'Walk on the Wild Side'. Ignore the Roger Whittaker intro, but revel in Trevor Morais' afro.

Mob Bunkhaus

More Hammond. More 'Walk on the Wild Side'. Jimmy Smith this time with a version that opens laid back and then takes off from about a minute and a half in. For lovers of well-boiled ham.

While looking for Rahsaan Roland Kirk stuff I found this amazing film with John Cage and himself:

http://www.ubu.com/film/kirk.html

QuoteAlthough Rahsaan Roland Kirk and John Cage never actually meet in this film (Cage's enigmatic questions about sound are intercut with some of Kirk's more ambitious experiments with it) these two very different musical iconoclasts share a similar vision of the boundless possibilities of music. Kirk plays three saxes at once, switches to flute, incorporates tapes of birds played backwards, and finally hands out whistles to his audience and encourages them to accompany him, "in the key of W, if you please." Cage, on the other hand, is preparing a work for musical bicycle with David Tudor and Merce Cunningham at the Seville Theatre in London. Cage meets Rahsaan's music in an echo chamber, and he ends his search for the sound of silence in his favorite spot -- the anechoic chamber -- where it turns out to be the uproar of "your nervous system in operation." -- Martin Williams, JAZZ TIMES

That sounds amazing, I'm looking forward to watching that later.

Apart from being a great clip, you may be interested to know the that the two front-persons are Karen Mantler (daughter of Carla Bley/Michael Mantler) and Eric Mingus (son of Charles):

I'm afraid I don't like that last number on any level, but it did lead me to watch Karen Carpenter drumming, which was fun.

Holy fucking crap. Searching idly on YouTube for jazz stuff earlier, I found this. I never knew there was any surviving video of Wes Montgomery with Stan Tracey. Audio, yes. But then I found this, from an ITV arts series called Tempo. This really is quite something.

Wes Montgomery - Four On Six

Dunno if this is jazz, I'ver not sniffed it up close. It's the track that pushed to buy a number of Abercrombie CDs way back when, but nothing else reached the heights of this opener off Gateway.
Three people making much music:
Gateway - Back-Woods Song

Oh, ha, should I say it's not a video, just a collection of pics? It is just that.
