AARGHH to much info that I didn't know up til now. I have a 22 hr round megabus journey from Dundee to London coming up and that comic reader thing sounds like it could be a life saver. How do you do it? Downloading games sounds like a revelation too. So you need some sort of card reader did you say???
I've just got a wireless router and I can confirm that's all you need to play ds online. I can't work out how to play people on my friends list at 42 games in one, i'm desperate to write some swear words after lobbing a gutter ball.
I'm alright at mario kart but it seems all the japanese folk know a technique called 'snaking' whereby you can powerslide alternately left and right throughout the whole race and go about twice as fast as anyone else.
How bout some bowling at 5:30pm anyone?

I'm not up on the latest, but I'll check for you later.  I think there are now all-in-one systems like the Ninja DS and the M3 Simply so that you don't need passcards or flashme like the old way.  So you need that, then a card to put the games on, I use a minisd 1 gig card (about 20 quid).  Then if your puter doesn't have a card reader, you need one of those (about 10 quid or cheaper).  You can even run a homebrew FTP server on the DS, there's lots of cool stuff.  Or DSOrganize lets you connect to a "homebrew database" and download the stuff there directly to your card.

Yeah, I'm on there now, anyone else?!  (Just gonna grab a cuppa, brb)

El Unicornio, mang

I recommend the GP32 if you can get hold of one. Emulates pretty much everything pre-1994 including MAME, SNES, Megadrive, Spectrum, etc and also GBC and GBA. There's even a PSone emulator at an early stage of development, although it can only handle the simpler games. Really nice big clear screen too.

Analrapist

Well I've taken the plunge and ordered 42 All-Time Classics!

The other games I've got for my DS are Mario Kart DS, News Super Mario Bros. and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. What games are there that every DS owner should have?

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

Metroid Prime Hunters is a lot of fun, particularly in multiplayer against friends.

Consignia

Has anyone mentioned Ouendan or it's American brother, Elite Beat Agents? I've had them both for months, and I'm still totally addicted. Currently trying to beat Jumping Jack Flash on Hard, just to unlock a harder difficulty. Curse it's almost impossible mid-section.

Anyway, I recommend both to everyone wanting to see what the DS is capable of in terms of innovative gaming.

Neil

Cool as fuck, I'm browsing this forum with my DS now!  Still text-only for the meantime, although it's rendering a nice blue background.  DSOrganize is a very impressive homebrew utility.  I mean, I love also that you can open shoutcast streams, that's come in handy for me before when I've been staying over at people's houses.

Other great DS games: Lost In Blue is terrific.  So is the Phoenix Wright sequel, love the games to bits.  Dragon Quest Heroes is a lot of fun.  If you like maddeningly addictive games that make you wish you'd taken up crack instead, then there's Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon.  Lost In Blue is a better choice though, I must get round to finishing that so I can start the sequel.  Star Fox is pretty good.  The other recommendations given are great too, particulalry Metroid Prime Hunters which I also really enjoyed in single-player.  Oh, Advance Wars Dual Strike for strategy.

You'll love 42-All-Time Classics, gis a shout when you get it.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, Sonic is really good too, even though I'm not a huge Sonic fan.  And I've already mentioned Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam which is tons of fun.  There's another Tony Hawks with online capability too, Sk8land or something.

Sonic Rush is flipping fantastic, uses the two screens of the DS well.  My only gripes with the game are that it's a bit too easy and whenever you use the touch screen the controls aren't amazingly responsive.

I like Lego Star Wars in spite of its bugginess.  Again, too easy to complete but a hell of a load of fun.

I don't know why I haven't got any Mario for my DS yet.  After reading this thread I don't think I'm using the DS to its fullest to say the least!  When I get back from holiday I'll start fiddling about with homebrew.  I need to get a wireless network set up at home as well.  I've used the wireless network at my mum and dad's to do a bit of browsing with my PSP.  Fairly impressive (this site looks very good on it), but unfortunately all you really can do is browse as it takes ages to type anything at all.

Has anyone got the Sega Megadrive collection for the PSP?  If so, is it any good?

i've got all those, brain training and metroid. I think you have all the essentials though until zelda comes out

More 42 games in 1 Neil or anyone else?

ffogems

Has anyone recommended Castlevania? It's great, and has an extensive catalogue of spells and weaponry to use against some really grand and gruesome baddies. Really enjoyable and the sound (which I nearly never pay attention to in games) is also glorious.

I'm getting 42 all-time classics on the 18th and as I've got a new router I'm ready for online play, so please hold off any disinterest that might be developing through repeated loss and pique. I don't want to get to the party with my mail-order hat on to find everyone's fucked off home.

Neil

Yeah, I'll fire it up now, I fancy some Jenga and Poker.

Neil

Is it being a fanny for you too?!  I fiddled with my settings to try and make it so only my DS can connect, so I think that might be why, but it seems to be ok now.

buntyman

yeah keeps disconnecting. I unplugged all my gear and am now trying again

Neil

I've been googling, seems to be a problem on Nintendo's end.

buntyman

ok i'll try again at 7pm. Who else is in? Poker is best with 3 or more.

Neil

I think it's working now.  Yep, deffo.

EDIT:  Oh I did a quick read-up with regards new homebrew/backup solutions.  The M3 DS Simply looks tops and seems to be about 35 quid, then you just need a micro SD card and a card reader.  It seemingly takes away the need for patching roms and stuff, and there's no need for using a dedicated passcard or flashing the firmware.

EDIT:  Make sure you get a good SD card though, I went with Play.com as it gets a good rating for speed and stuff.  Check www.m3wiki.com for info.

Milo

That M3 Simply looks pretty damn good. I think I'll get me one of them.

Consignia

I have an M3 Simply. It's fab, but you do have to accept that you can't play GBA roms on it.

Milo

Ah, that's the downside is it? Still, that's not too much of a problem.

buntyman

So is M3 better than R4 in your opinion? i don't understand it all but whichever is easiest to download and play ds games suits me. Where do you buy these things from?

Anyway, a quick heads up: Theme Park DS has been released in Japan complete with full English-language translation. It's a fairly straight conversion of the original DOS game and seems to play pretty well so far.

I know the PSP isn't the most popular handheld in Christendom, but I was lucky enough to review Thrillville for the Official PSP magazine, and for as-good-as my first time in 13 years of videogame journalism, I wanted to give it ten out of ten. Having rather dropped out of handheld gaming in the last few years, the idea of having a game so fucking dense with hours of activity and entertainment on a handheld seemed futuristic. In fact when I can afford one, I'd be tempted to buy a second-hand console just for that one game.

I used to love Theme park, and it was the original, but Thrillville wiped its arse with it. Don't know if that new version can boast much in innovation?

They're pretty much the same device. They're the same price too. You can get either.

As for usage, all you do is stick an SD card into it, put a couple of files on it, and you're away.

Mr. Analytical

There's an official PSP magazine?  talk about spreading the talent pool thinly.

I was talking the other day about videogame journalism and while it's arguably not today what it was back in my youth, it did instill a lot of hacks with some great values.  I remember when they started SFX magazine and most of the reviewers came from gaming mags and invariably they could be relied upon for completely scathing and funny comments.

Maybe I'm looking back on those days with rose tinted spectacles but game journalism does seem to be a breeding ground for decent writers.  Far more than pretty much any other kind of specialist journalism.

I need to get a few more games for my DS, next on my list is Metroid Prime Hunters I think or maybe that 42 classics thing folk here are mentioning. I see you mention you play Tony Hawk Downhill Jam Neil, have you unlocked all the tracks? Being an arrogant wanker who completed past Tony Hawk games in a couple hours I thought I'd put it on hard difficulty but unlocking that last map is a bastard. I'm just doing it in the 'jam session' mode because I can't be assed with all the story and that character popping up on the screen every couple of seconds screaming 'RADICAL!' or some such phrase. Any tips for getting that last course?

The R4 (as Consignia pointed out, they're the same thing but rebadged -- in fact I'd go one further and say that at the moment the R4 is slightly better as the new firmware releases come out for it a day or so earlier than they do for the M3) is still available for ~£16 from http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1202 and it seems to come with a card reader as well.

Puzzle Quest is currently eating up way too much of my time (I never really got into Zookeeper or Pokemon Link or any of those games but PQ has me hooked), as is Puzzle Series Vol. 6: Illust Logic -- it's a Japan-only Nonograms (aka Picross) game and it's perfect for quick 5-minute blasts.

As for homebrew, ZXDS is a relatively new Spectrum emulator which has already become my favourite as it's the first DS-based emulator to support the Spectrum 128K (so multi-part games that use all the available memory like Target: Renegade, Robocop etc. are finally playable) and tape files (so multi-part games that don't use the 128's memory are playable too -- eg. the fantastic Yes, Prime Minister game). Unfortunately it doesn't have sound or save states yet but it's still pretty awesome.

Thanks for the tip. Just bought one of these - way cheaper than ebay and everywhere else I was looking. So all I need now is and SD card yeah?

A microSD card, yes. 512MB would suffice but I'd personally struggle with anything less than 1GB 'cos I like to have the choice of a bunch of different games. Also 1GB cards are relatively cheap anyway (£8 from Amazon, and that's from Amazon themselves rather than a potentially-shady Marketplace seller).

Another quick game recommendation -- Monster House. The developers had the genius idea of taking a kids' CGI-animated movie and turning it into Haunted House Robotron.

ozziechef

I just got both Phoenix Wright games for £9.99 each from Tesco.com - strangely the first one is from Jersey but the sequel isn't.

The DS is fantastic, I love Mario Kart online, alas it is my girlfriends DS and I can't convince her to buy 42 All Time Classics (as she'd rather buy games like Cooking Mama).

I sense her next birthday present may include draughts and bowls....

Yeah I just unlocked it last night, only had two more bits to go on it.  I wouldn't be in hard mode though, just normal or whatever.  The challenges in the last map seem like a nightmare, but I suppose they all do at first.  Tried it online yet!?  I need to get back into it first.  Might give it a quick go now though to see what the ingame voice chat is like.

Speaking of which, was just using the homebrew wifi voice chat app, it's good, there's a shared canvas you can draw on too.  Some guy eventually started making really weird grunting noises and I pissed myself laughing, as did everyone else.  Could be great fun after a few beers.
