Anyone want to play Mario Kart or Metroid Prime online later today?

My Metroid code is 1074 7145 7536

My Mario Kart one is 043046 973062

El Unicornio, mang

So is the PSP worth getting then? They've got them on ebay for under 50 quid, wouldn't mind having it for the bus

I'll give you a couple of mario kart races if you like? 8:45? If you're too good i might not be able to tolerate it.

my code is: 442462 503540

I must warn you that, like everyone else, I'm the best at Mario Kart.

buntyman

Oh well, I hope you enjoyed that. I hope that victory is good for your player stats but it was fuck all fun for me. Don't see the point in doing that ancient japanese turbo trick round every course when its obvious I can't.
We won't be burning rubber together again so to speak.

It's not as if the mini boost is top secret, it's even in the game manual.  I've never understood this attitude that people have against it (apart from when people do it on the straights, that's not always entirely fair).

buntyman

Come on now, you were boosting non-stop, on the straights and a-thing. I'm claiming moral victory and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it.

Craig Torso

Bah!  The only straight I did it on was on Delfino Plaza and only then on the first lap through habit, I stopped after that!

Neil

Been really enjoying Final Fantasy Tales or whatever it's called.  The Chocobo thing.  Those mini-game collections are great for handheld devices like the DS.  I still want to try and get WarioWare Twiseted at some point!  This Chocobo Tales really is smashing, beautifully constructed little game, really interesting visual style for the book parts.  Nicely balanced and keeps you coming back to get the extras.  Love the card fighting too, it's whet my appetite for that nerdy anime card fighting game again, that's some great strategy.  Anyway, highly recommend this.

Is anyone going to be playing the Pokemon games?  I may give it a try.  Everyone was going fucking nuts for it to come out.  Absolutely fucking NUTS.  The previous ones have been quite addictive really...the only thing that's putting me off is that apparently walking around is quite slow in this one.  31 in two months.

Quote from: "StuBruise"As for homebrew, ZXDS is a relatively new Spectrum emulator which has already become my favourite as it's the first DS-based emulator to support the Spectrum 128K (so multi-part games that use all the available memory like Target: Renegade, Robocop etc. are finally playable) and tape files (so multi-part games that don't use the 128's memory are playable too -- eg. the fantastic Yes, Prime Minister game). Unfortunately it doesn't have sound or save states yet but it's still pretty awesome.

ZXDS now has sound, save states and can speed up some tape loaders. Go on, it's still the Spectrum's 25th birthday for another quarter of an hour -- that's just enough time to fire up Yes, Prime Minister!

Don't be silly!  It's not like he was cheating, or doing anything that you couldn't have done.   Why don't you learn to snake and then play him again?  That's the whole point of competitive games, after all.

I know it's none of my business, but as a long-time Street Fighter player it annoys me no end when people complain about features that everyone can access and then try and claim some sort of of 'honour' or 'moral' superiority in defeat.  He WON and you LOST and that's all there is to it.

buntyman

Yes I used to take a similar stance against Street Fighter players who went Dhalsim and repeatedly did the filthy sliding kick in the corner. Sensible Soccer against someone who always scored from the halfway line with a diagonal shot were also shunned by me after a while. I can't be bothered learning all these silly tricks that are clearly not supposed to be possible in the game's design and its  not fun to play against someone who has.
Changing the subject, I got my R4 thing yesterday and its brilliant. Seems slightly complicated to use for applications other than just playing games but i'm happy to settle for that for now. Elite Beat Agents is excellent.
Anyone fancy some 42 games in 1 tonight?

Craig Torso

Sticking to the SF analogy for a moment, I think the boosts are more like learning character moves rather than doing the same cheap trick.

I got Tetris the other day and while they've ruined regular Tetris with that infinite spin thingy, the online two-player is just fantastic.

Anyone up for a game on Mario Kart, Tetris or Metroid?  My code for Tetris is:

Eh?  Dhalsim's slide is an actual move.  The amount of blockstun it does and his throw range are all numerical values that were decided by the programmers back when the game was being put together.  That he can do that sort of thing isn't accidental at all, it's what he does, how he wins, in the absense of the powerful, multi-hitting, close-range strikes that some of the other characters wield.

It's hardly like it's inescapable anyway.  You can jump out of corner slide traps.  You can counter-attack them.  Or you can stay out of the corners, and not get knocked over in the first place.  One of the reasons I love SF so much is the endless back-and-forth between players.  I do this, so you do that.  You do that, so I have to do this, and so on.  Each player improving, learning, refining their skills, their knowledge and abilities and elevating the match until it becomes a raw test of guts, memory and split-second timing.

You don't bloody lose a match and go 'well the programmers clearly never intended that' and then put the pad down - that's rubbish!

Quick question for all you DS people... to play against you lot, I would have to purchase one of these things:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-Access-Point-Nintendo-DS/dp/B000BVAPFI/ref=pd_bbs_2/202-2981111-7923867?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1182696021&sr=8-2

as well, wouldn't I? Just curious for when I get round to buying a DS Lite.

Or earlier in this thread people were saying that the official Nintendo dongle has more restrictions but what is the alternative? I do have a wireless router but that is our computer room and i'd rather be able to play in my bedroom with my laptop nearby.

VegaLA

DS lite ?
I heard rumblings on Engadget that its due for another facelift very soon. Can anyone confirm that ?

Surely not? Would they change the design again so quickly?

Well, I have decided to definitely buy a handheld. Trouble is I don't really fancy any of the games on DS - I'm sure I could find some diversion in the 42 classics pack but not much, I don't really like bowling or card games or stuff like that. This is a bugger because the online gaming element and voice chat sound like fun, and I could do with some Brain Training.
No, the games on the PSP are more my thing, I like the sound of GTA, Ratchett and Clank and various other shooters and driving games. I'm aware its not taken off as well as it could have. Apparently this new rejigged PSP came out on Japan in March, or was going to - I haven't found any mention of its existence beyond that. Anyone have any ideas if its come out anywhere yet, or when its going to, or are Sony just full of shit yet again?

OK, found  this:
QuoteSony confirm EU PSP release date delayed again
16 March 2005 6:59 by Dela

Sony has confirmed that the European release date of the Playstation Portable hand-held console will be delayed again in Europe. Sony did not give any date for when the console will be available but has said it will be a matter of months not a matter of weeks. Online retailer Amazon.co.uk lists the release date for the console as June 24th whereas HMV lists it as June 6th. Sony said the reason for the delay is to meet the anticipated demand for the console in the U.S.

Sony wants to ensure that 1,000,000 PSP devices are available on the U.S. market when the console is released and also to have a continuity of supply thereafter. So basically it all came down to Sony's lack of ability to make enough consoles for each market by its original set date which was a March release. The console release then slipped to April and now it looks like European gamers will have to wait until June at least.

Rubbish Monkey

Rumours of a redesigned PSP have been flinging back and forth ever since the DS redesign. Sony has always said that its not happenning so far. I'd wait and see if they announce one at E3 (the latest rumour is that Sony is unveiling the redesigned PSP and an announcement of a launch date then)

Milo

I recall the closest thing to a redesigned PSP being that some versions had a slightly better battery.

Bugger. Lets try again.

Sony continues to play hide and seek, and serenely confirms something they have been vehemently denying until last week. Just yesterday, we were talking about some new rumours that appeared on Kotaku, regarding a redesigned PlayStation Portable, and now, for the first time ever, we finally have a confirmation from a Sony official. More precisely, from SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire, speaking at the British launch of Sony's "PSP in Education" initiative yesterday afternoon.

According to today's report on GI.biz, Maguire told an invited audience of press, teachers and education specialists that the current PSP is just the "first iteration" of the console.

Much like the first PlayStation was followed by a smaller PSOne, and the PS2 received a highly successful redesign as well, it seems that the PSP handheld will also go through a similar treatment in the future, becoming smaller and lighter. However, Maguire warns that, no matter the changes, one thing that will certainly remain the same is the screen's generous size - the PSP's pride and glory.

In theory, a smaller PSP should translate into a smaller price, which is currently placed at GBP 179 in the UK. But don't rush with those savings just yet, because we may be up for a long, long wait for the new PSP model. At least considering that the redesigned PSOne and "slim" PS2 came out some 4-5 years after the original models, and that the PSP is still rather young - having been launched in the West during 2005.

At least they made the first step: getting out of the denial phase.

So essentially its another chapter in Sony's quest to fuck things up for themselves. Its like they're from another planet, one in which being secretive and unforthcoming doesn't make customers go to their competitors. I am going to buy a handheld console. I was leaning towards a PSP. Now its likely that a redesigned one will come out at some point in the future, but seeing as they refuse to officially confirm it never mind name a date, I cannot buy one. I'm just not willing to risk buying one and then have it be superceded by a better model the next week, thats happened to me too often. I'm sure the idea is that if they announce it then people won't buy the original model in the mean time, but this attitude just has the opposite effect on me. Now I remember why I have a 360.

Brain game pulled over 'offence'

QuoteA video game which uses a term abusive to people with disabilities is being pulled by its manufacturer.

MindQuiz, a brain training game for the Nintendo DS handheld console, was released in the UK by French software giant Ubisoft in March 2007.

However, poor performance in one section sees the player labelled in an offensive manner.

The company has apologised "to anyone who was offended by the game" and said it will withdraw it.

"As soon as we were made aware of the issue we stopped distribution of the product and are now working with retailers to pull the game off the market," a spokesperson said.

"The game was developed in Japan, and we unfortunately did not pick up on the offending word in our quality assurance. We are currently working with the developer to find a way to rectify the issue."

The problem emerged after a Belfast woman contacted BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan Show.

Nicola told the show she had been playing the game - aimed at ages three and above - to pass the time while in hospital giving birth to her baby son, Austin, four weeks ago.

It was a fraught time for the young mother, who had lost her other son, Logan, just before Christmas.

The three-year-old - who suffered from cerebral palsy and was severely brain damaged - passed away after contracting pneumonia.

Nicola was shocked when she had performed poorly at one part of the game and it rated her efforts in a manner derogatory to the disabled.

"I thought it was absolutely appalling that a word like this should be used to describe someone who has not achieved very well," she said.

"My daddy also has cerebral palsy and he is in his mid-50s and this is a word that really offends my dad."

Mr. Analytical

Given the talk of women in hospital I was half expecting the game to label you an "intentional miscarrier" or something.

"You failed to finish your game of Sudoku you child-murdering cunt!"

Geraint

i'm just amused this woman is willing to publically admit that she did badly enough in a game suitable for 3 year old children to be labelled a 'super s*****c'
