Concerts a Emporter

I included the newest episode of the Take Away Shows (Concerts a Emporter) in the National thread I started earlier, but I think this deserves a thread of it's own. Apologies if it has been discussed before.

It's a great little idea I think. Basically, the directer Vincent Moon, gets bands to do relatively impromptu "acoustic" sessions in all sorts of strange locations like basements, restaurants, a gym, on the street etc. They are all shot very well, and some of them absolutely beautifully. But what makes them is the level of invention involved in taking songs from their normal context and trying to make them work under such constraints, principally lack of electricity. So for percussion bands just start tapping, hitting or kicking whatever they have in their environment, and melodies are transposed to different instruments or even just whistled or sung. There's just a sense of creativity and excitement to it that I'm really enjoying. It really takes the music out of the comfort zone. Not everything works, which I think is one of the reasons I like them so much.

The National one is possibly my favourite so far, the dancing at the start of 'Ada' is beautiful. The Tapes n Tapes one where the singer nearly gets hit by a bus is nice too, the I'm From Barcelona video (We're From...) has a great concept but the limitations of their mic set up means it's not quite as good as it could have been, the Spinto Band one with the little battery powered casio keyboard is pretty good too. I still have loads to watch.

BUMP

I bumped this thread, rather than the suspiciously similar thread I created.
They've got a few interesting new additions to the website.

Vampire Weekend

Scout Niblett (for some reason I love rudimentary song writing, rudimentary guitar playing and poor singing... love this song)

Ha. Thanks. For reference, jaydee's more popular thread is here.
Maybe if the two are merged there could be a Vincent Moon superthread? With about 3 people posting. Like the rasslin thread.

Not sure about that Vampire Weekend one actually, I'm not sure how well those songs cope with being stripped down. The echoey one is nice though.
