Big Brother 8

So this starts up again on Wednesday.  Do BB enthusiasts of past have any high hopes for it?  I've got to say, after the resurfacing shitstorm of the last week, I sense a mid-run cancellation on the horizon.  It'll be either diluted to the point where it just becomes a dull-fest or they'll put in another set of idiots which people just won't have the patience to sit though any more.  I don't have much faith in Endemol getting the magic mix need.  The opening signs aren't good - last years got highly boring 3 weeks from the end - around the 70 day mark - a figure which was virtually the end point in series past, but the rumour is that this series will be longest yet.  And the house gimmicks - bath in the living room and the like - will quickly become irrelevant as they always do, the HMs will find a way round it.

chocky909

I think I will watch it, as I have all precious BBs and see if it holds me as have all previous BBs. I have no doubt it will grab me in some way. I have not followed any of the build up, I know NAAATHEEENG.

I'm still deciding whether to start watching it or not. I doubt it'll fall on it's arse like beardy says although it may start to falg comapeared to previous series'.

I'm starting to get sick of the way they try to make it more 'extreme' every series. Not a good gameplan. Nvertheless I'll prolly keep watching. I'll have to go to basic minimum TV status, just Corrie, and BB.

I'm such a sad fuck.

weirdbeard

The prospect of getting an hour of great telly every night for 12 weeks is what gets me into the start of each series.  Man, I wish this one is somewhere approaching the quality of BB2, which seems quite sedate compared to recent series.

George Oscar Bluth II

It'd be great if they could get some decent, normal likeable people in this time. Or at least some people who aren't desparate celebrity wannabes with previous on every reality show on E4.

Not going to happen though, it'll be the usual parade of screeching freaks, Big Brother will be as brazenly manipulative as ever, it'll be as depressing as ever and the public will lap it up. It's a shame the enjoyable show of series 1, 2 and 3 had to die.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

It's a shame it was ever born.

Artemis

I'll give this a fair crack of the whip, because like every year, it has the potential to be a really enjoyable and insightful series. Last year had moments of greatness (Shabaz, anyone?) but quickly descended into a fairly transparent and desperate attempt to maintain ratings by any means possible.

If the last couple of years are anything to go by, the first week is the most enjoyable, before Endemol have chance to engineer events and construct whatever story they're going to flog us.

I got through the first few rounds of auditions this year and if the people I met are anything to go by, I won't be watching long.

SOTS

It's Big Brother versus The Apprentice lot having their attempt at doing QVC. The day before my art exam.

They really pick shit days. Though I don't know if I can be arsed with Big Brother this year, but I tend to feel left out if I don't, which is pathetic.

Hollyoaks omnibus

I'm looking forward most to the apology (s).

"Dear viewer, it's official -we actually are just the sort of shit-fucks you always thought we were... "

weirdbeard

I'm just hoping the shitstorm of CBB will bring about changes, and for the better.  Surely they can't follow that up with more of the same old, same old regular BB we've seen over the last 3 years?  I'd have preferred to see it take a break for a year, let the dust settle from CBB (and the recent OFCOM verdict - wonderfully timed) and work out where they want to take it, starting with the new house which was scheduled to come into operation in 2008 anyway.  However, with BB being the cash cow it is, that was never going to happen as long as the bean counters at Channel 4 and Endemol had a say in matters.

petula dusty

I've a feeling they will play it quite safe this year with the housemates following the Shilpa hoo-ha. I hope not though as it will be extremely tedious otherwise. I know I'll be watching it would be pointless to say otherwise. I like the fact that I can get really involved in it for 3 months and come September I'll have forgotten who half of them were.

Can anyone name last years housemates without looking them up?

Pete
Nicky
Big tits

Erm, that's all I can remember.

Small Man Big Horse

I'm really struggling to think of anyone now you say it. Erm, Lea was the large chested blonde wasn't she, and there was also Richard, and Shabaz (as previously mentioned in this thread)...That's all I can think of though. Oh, and Leslie who couldn't say her name right, that was last year, wasn't it?

Anyhoo, DS have transcripts of unaired material of Jade and co being racist here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/bigbrother8/a58214/in-full-the-unaired-footage-in-bb-race-row.html - tis very poor, though I imagine Weekender would like it : )

They really do need to find some naturally good natured and funny people to put in the house this year, who don't go mad with boredom / the inanity of other housemates, though I doubt that they will do.

petula dusty

Some pics of the new house here

It's so random lolz.

SMBH - Lesleh was in BB6. Last year was Grace and Mikey and 'Glun' and the other Welsh one (not Ingrid..ooh what was her name) and Aisleyne and Sam and Suzie...and some other people.

Inspired by Warhol, you say? Ah, so the last forty years of British art and graphic design didn't happen, then? Terry who?

Tosspack.

Well, that's the only character of the show out of the way. I'm sure I wasn't alone in tuning in one year, expecting to see the house take on its own personality, shifting and splitting mitotically down the middle. It didn't happen. If only Big Brother lived up to its promise as the only true architecture programme in the summer schedules.

Ah, it's coming back to me a bit now. Wasn't the other Welsh one Imogen? And it had George in it who quit early on because he didn't want fame? I think that's the case anyway.

I'm hoping to win it, in order to counter-act any chance I have of obtaining fame.

Yeah, SMBH, you're getting mixed up with last year's female with a northern accent who couldn't pronounce her name, "Bonner".

Lebovici: You've not got the right to criticise anything or anyone, ever, because in the week you recommended that people pay particular attention to a Ford Mondeo advert. A ridiculously pretentious Ford Mondeo advert which will probably become famous for "That Mondeo advert music", which of course is part of Michael Andrews' score from Donnie Darko.

I shall be addicted to Big Brother this year too I expect.

LeboviciAB84

Ah, so I suppose you've made a more pretentious Mondeo advert, have you? That's been shown in five-hundred countries simultaneously?

Christ, you lot and your opinions.

Heh, yeah, you're right there. I've just done a quick google search and even now I still struggle to tell the two of them apart:
Spoiler alert

(I've put it behind spoiler tags as it's slightly nsfw.)

gazzyk1ns

Hah, I think that screencap of Lesleh was from literally the first night, things got a bit dull and she decided to reveal her breasts. Fair play to her I say, but still, it was very telling. She was a right nasty piece of work, she contributed to ruining Sam from that year. She (Sam) might well have been far enough down the road to ruin anyway, it was impossible to tell really.

Lebbo: Whoa, steady on with the "you lot", Jesus. Heh, I intended that as a light-hearted comment, although I did actually say "Hah!" in real life when I read your post in a thread about the Champions League final, saying "Watch the Mondeo advert.". It was both the most, and least, pretentious thing that anyone could have posted, you did brilliantly to combine the two things in one post.

JesusAndYourBush

Rumor has it that one of the contestants is a woman in full berkha.  Like that's not gonna cause another "race row".

Er . . . so did I.

Sorry.

Ah, so now your irony-detectors work properly! That's more like it: compliments.

There are not five-hundred countries . . .

petula dusty

Bonner!! Of course!

Oi! I've just seen that tag. I haven't got Alzeimer's. Have I?

This year I predict there will be:

A Scotch
A Geordie
A Brummie
A Cockerney
A Gay
A Black
A Mixed Race
A Asian
A Dwarf
A Emo
A Bimbo
A Cunt

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Can't they just show porn?

My excuse, my official excuse, is that it's late and I have been consuming alcohol.

As others have said, I really hope they don't screw this year's BB up immediately as they have done at least the last few times, as a result of thinking that they must have some sort of "twist" (urrgh) from the off. Some of the most promising people always get deprived of a decent chance through that.

Ciarán

Bollocks to it! Why does anybody give a flying fucking fuck about that pile of shit?? I fail to understand it. Big fucking Brother! We're supposed to be intelligent. We're supposed to have a sense of right. You mean to tell me you give a shit that bloke (a) shags bird (b) on live TV? Get a fucking life!!! It has zero to contribute to our understanding of humanity, unless you think that only the most morbid fascinations carry any weight. Just switch the fucking thing off or you forego your right to criticize the state of TV (comedy and otherwise) in my opinion.

"Most promising people"?? In what sense!? You think anyone who wins Big Brother is going to make a jot of fucking difference to the world?

Seconded.

Yes, and I'll go further. It's depressing that it even warrants a thread here.

gazzyk1ns

You of all people should know that actually, if you consider the lillies, everyone makes a difference to the world.

Yeah all right, seriously... don't be a Big Brother snob, we've been over this a billion times. The characters and "plots" involved on-screen are thick, yes, we all know, that doesn't make 100% of the audience thick. The same reasoning can be applied to The Apprentice and Question Time, although I'm far more convinced that Big Brother knows its place.
