Couldn't find the old Alan Moore thread, so what the hell.

Someone's started up a petition at the 10 Downing St website to get Alan Moore an MBE.  He may well refuse it, but it would be fun to see him at least nominated.  Go on, sign it, you know you want to...

Well...he is the Greatest Living Englishman, so why not.

In other Alan Moore-related news...

...what about that Keanu Reeves as Doctor Manhattan rumour...?

Goldentony

Quotewhat about that Keanu Reeves as Doctor Manhattan rumour...?

Betetr than the one about Tom Cruise being Ozymandias

CaledonianGonzo

Jude Law was linked with it before Tom Cruise....and has since been again.  Seems reasonable enough to me.  Pretty spot on...

Jack Shaftoe

Actually, Tom C as Ozymandias might work quite well, if you think of him being like a more contained version of the character he played in Magnolia...

Photos of the Moore/Gebbie nuptials, various Gaimans, Zarates, etc lingering in the background.

Presume that's Steve 'No Relation' Moore in the best man slot.

Vaguely unimpressed by Lost Girls?  You're not the only one:

http://www.english.ufl.edu/imagetext/archives/v3_3/lost_girls/

Imagetext's round-table review, with 4-interlinking essays on the uber-porno, where "none of the participants seem entirely taken in by Lost Girls".

From Charles Hatfield we get a perspective steeped in the rich knowledge of comics history one expects from him. From Kenneth Kidd we get an equally detailed look at the relationship between the text and children's literature. Meredith Collins provides a look at how Lost Girls fits into historical contexts of sexuality and pornography. And finally (or not, depending on what order you read them in), Chris Eklund offers a look at the intertwining of magic and sex in Moore's work.

Interesting stuff..

I've signed, but oh dear...

QuoteShowing Britain to be leader in the field and spearheading a trend of British writers leading the US scene, including bestselling author Neil Gaiman and Mark Millar, author of the hugely influential Civil War.

Yes, because the British Government is going to give two figs about a Marvel crossover. Stupid prat. Why didn't he talk about Moore's vast body of work, the critical and literary acclaim it has received or the numerous genres he has written in?

LOST GIRLS HITS TV

QuoteTanya Spreckley of the Canadian TV show "SexTV" has just aired the
one-and-only filmed TV segment on LOST GIRLS. Flying over to Northampton
England, Tanya and her crew filmed and edited an amazing interview with
Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie. And they've just posted a streaming-video
version of it at their website.

OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE!!!

http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/?column=13

Quote from: LITGthe long awaited "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier," described once by author Alan Moore in this column as "not my best comic ever, not the best comic ever, but the best thing ever," will not be published outside of the USA by America's Best Comics, an imprint of Wildstorm/DC Comics, or distributed in those territories by DC's distributor Diamond Comics.

DC sources inform me that the reasons for concern are over issues concerning copyright and trademark of certain literary characters referred to in the book, some that are public domain in the USA but not in other territories who have different copyright laws.

I mean...COME ON!

Maybe Alan Moore should stop nicking other people's characters and y'know, think up some of his own, especially since he gets so shirty about Hollywood nicking his. It's a valid point, no matter how much I love the guy and his work.

samadriel

Christ.  Well, the internet should make short work of that'n...

Santa's Boyfriend

I can sense another rant brewing from the magician.

By the way, I got my copy of Lost Girls about 6 months ago.  My guess is that if you order through Amazon.com there's a good chance it'll arrive.  But I'm sure there will be lots of advice nearer the time.

Mister Six

Apparently a lot of comic shops will just import it themselves. Although if they mark it up too much it might be cheaper to get it from Amazon.

Valid how? There's a difference between claiming to adapt a work then changing everything about it and creating an entirely new work using pre-existing characters.

That complaint doesn't even work on a "well he's only doing half a job" level, because the detail and research that goes into LoEG is immense.

I've gone right off him since he dissed Monty Python and praised the Mighty Boosh to the skies in the same breath.

Monkey Whimsy

To be fair, we all have our own opinions on comedy and just about everything. I personally agree with you on the superiority of Monty Python over The Mighty Boosh, but Mr Moore having an alternate opinion doesn't really take any thing away from his work, to my mind. I personally found Lost Girls a little shocking for shocking's sake. Although I credit it as an excellent piece of work, the repressed kiddie within me couldn't help but cringe a little at the idea of well-loved 'children's characters', Alice, Wendy and Dorothy sharing the sexual experiences they encountered, mostly within their original narratives. Melinda Gebbie's artwork is provocative, gloriously sexy and sumptuous. Another thing that endears me to the work is the way Moore admitted, during the early development, that he inadvertently chose three characters that represent the three tiers of the class system (Upper Class Alice, Middle Class Wendy and Blue Collar Dorothy). Reminds me of The Frost Report. Shame Great Ormond Street decided to get it banned in this country. Trust Wendy Darling to put a spanner in the works! Thank goodness for Amazon and downloads. Just the kind of comic to tell your mum about. Unfortunately in my case, it was the other way around. Why are people only liberal in the wrong places?

CaledonianGonzo

I thought Lost Girls was coming out in January?  And it was banned everywhere - except America.

It is coming out in the New Year in the UK, & it's not banned, though some issues of Taboo were seized by customs that did feature the strip originally, that shouldn't affect the UK release. It's been delayed due to an incredibly dreary bit of legal stuff involving Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Something that (virtually) no-one has been able to buy for years now is Uncle Al's 'Outbreak of Violets', given away free to VIP guests at an MTV Europe show in 1995 who didn't know what the hell it was and probably threw it away. It sells online for up to £1000.

According to Lying In The Gutters, its shortly to be re-printed, so we can see what the 'fuss' is all about.

To keep you all updated, I saw him yesterday and he was on his way to see a rap posse. I think he's having a late-onset midlife crisis.

Oh, that Alan. He keerrraaaazzzzzzyyyyy!

Goldentony

Yea up to this point he seemed like a fairly normal guy.

Oh man, I'm so excited about The Black Dossier, thanks CalGonz. I'm going to save that up as a treat to myself later on.

Monsters, Maniacs and Moore - a documentary from 1987 finally surfaces on the YouTubes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ucba9NtF3cE

Hilarious sequence with the man interviewing himself.  Part II has him pontificating on art and realising there's nothing mystical about it all.  Obviously, he's changed his mind about that in the years since.

Xander

Just watched The Simpsons episode in which he, Dan Clowes and Art Speiglman appear. It's...ummm...interesting. The Maus thing they make Art do made me really uncomfortable, and although the joke regarding the Hollywood fatcats making Alan's work into shit was funny, the very fact he appeared in such a past-its-prime show is sadly ironic. It's just a shame the initial plot (a rival comic book store opening) was quickly turned into Homer getting plastic surgery. I remember a time when they didn't rely on the first 7 minutes of plot being instantly dropped, appearing only as setup for the 'main' 15 minutes.

Santa's Boyfriend

I know Leah Moore (albeit not all that well) and she's INCREDIBLY embarrassed about her cute 9 year-old self appearing in this film!

Found a clip of it on Yoube Tube

Very enjoyable, I thought.  Aside from the 'Maus' mask thing at the end which left a bit of a bad taste.

Good to be back, by the way.
