Oh the GD'ers are covering it.  Channel 4 was certainly a lot better under him than it is now.  He does actually seem to care about what he's doing.

What does the chairman actually do? This isn't some sort of flippant question where I'm suggesting that the answer is, "Bugger all!" I'm actually genuinely interested because I have no idea.

Infact, before the whole Hutton thing I didn't know who the BBC chairman was.

I think they set the overall direction for the channel and approve spending etc. They effectively decide what the BBC will show.
