Phi Life Cypher (pronouced Fe' Life Cypher, BTW) were part of the Gorillaz for a brief time at the outset. I believe Damon Albarn was keen, but they were ousted nonetheless, being kept on for the live gigs at a £150/gig. They got as far as recording this track + they voiced the TV ads + they went as far as having cartoon characters drawn up for them.

Yeah that's what I figured, as the 2004 remaster has the "Original 12 inch Version" of Funky.  But I wonder why they put on the "Hip House Club Mix" of Travelling instead of that other version.

Hip House was a UK thing, as far as I can recall. That 12" it was on may have only been released over here.

Interesting, I was just trying to figure out when and where it came from.  It's only recently that I've heard the bonus tracks on the 2004 remaster.     I think I'll just rip the audio from that YT vid as I can't find an mp3 of it anywhere else so far.

It's on there with the Mentally Mad 12inch, which it was backed with.  Hang on, just thought to check Amazon and it has some info:

"Funky",on the 12" vinyl you can bearly hear them talking on the record between verses on the new edition,you can hear it clearer but the sample has been also messed with. KOOL KEITH's starting vocals to '...while I break off with ease' has been done over (sorry someone has to tattletale 'round here). Originals? Not quite but it still makes the album more refreshing though. "Traveling..." (Hip-House Club Mix) was not needed here. The remix radio version (the video version) was a better choice. It sample KRAFTWERK and AFRIKA BAMBAATAA & THE SOUL SONIC FORCE but I guess samples were not cleared. Bummer!

Overall,it's better than the 1988 release although we are missing joints like "M.C.'s Ultra (Part II)","Funky Potion" and the original "Traveling At The Speed Of Thought (1987)". Maybe in another 16 light years away there will be another edition. When the ULTRAMAGNETIC reunion is predicted (psyche).

Edit:  I'll need to compare it to the "Funky (12" Version Rmx)" on the B-Sides companion, cause it just seems like a clearer-sounding beat on the former?!
