i'm a bit disappointed with gmail if i'm honest.

i do like all the mail features, the gripe i have is the crappy max attach size.

10MB same as hotmail/ yahoo & spymac.

sucky.

DuncanC

Heh, nice site. Gmail is, at worst, still less creepy than any credit card company.

Artemis

Well someone just invited me to open a gmail account so hopefully soon I'll be able to invite others (don't know if I have to somehow 'qualify' to do this) so I'd have no problem starting the VerbWhores ball rolling, if we could all invite each other so whoever wanted an account could have one. I'll start with the email address already provided when I am able to (it's not letting me invite anyone at the moment).

Pinball's right. Echelon can intercept anything it wants, though unless you're really up to no good it won't matter much. Lack of anonymousy is something we have to live with, regardless of it's ethical abhorancy. It doesn't matter which email provider you use, there's no getting away with it. I'd rather spend my time supporting a protest up at Menwith Hill then spending hours searching for the latest software provider claiming wrongly that they are the ones who can protect you.

Pinball

Bagsy I get Pinball@Echelon.com. Now that would be cool :-)

Timmay

I've got an account now. I'm using mine in ernest in the hope it'll get me some invites to hand out.

I'll let you know when I have some, and you can come and bid on em on eBum. ;)

imitationleather

Ah good.

When there's one avaliable could I have it please?

untitled_london

i'v had two accounts up for the past week ( i'm sure its been a full 7 dyas now) and still i don't have any invites to hand out... :(

don't hold your breath.

imitationleather

Ah, with a little help from gazzy, I now have an account.

Whenever I start a new account I think, "Right, this time I won't let it descend into anarchy where the only emails I receive are selling blood and puss porn and methods for increasing my manhood." But I know that next week it'll just be spam spam spam, ah well.

It's just the horrible inevitability of it all that I can't stand.

untitled_london

whats the address imitationleather

:))

i'm so funny

i just got my first two invites today, but, they are already promised, i'm sure the invites will roll into the other account later on today, but they also are promised, so until the next bout rolls around i have none to offload in here i'm afraid :(

My last two accounts have both gone over two years with no spam (well, one mail that I can remember), which is quite good. How do you end up with so much?

I remember my old hotmail one would get about 45-50 a day. That was annoying.

I was just about to say the same thing.  I've never got any spam, and I don't know why.  What am I doing wrong?

imitationleather

You probably don't go to www.hundredsoffreesexmailsaday.com and put your email address into the mailing list.

Errr... Not that I do either, of course.

Phillippe Lambert

Well, after an hour and a half, I managed to procure myself a gmail account! I'm so proud! Either, arse about http://www.gmailswap.com which might no prove very fruitful, but if you're lucky me it can be done, or go to either http://www.gmail4troops.com or http://www.gmailforthetroops.com and pretend to be a soldier.  Americans are gullible, so tell them you're a soldier in Iraq with the british army, they'll cream all over you and give you one.

And don't worry, I promise if i get invites to share them about round here too!

Love and kisses, Phillippe xxx

hahaha you cunt!

(nice one)

Phillippe Lambert

Seriously, if you just make up some utter crap, they'll believe it. Even when they say they'll only send them to military email addresses, just tell them you're in an internet cafe in basra or something, and so can only access your yahoo account and such like. Only in America!

weekender

Anyone got a spare invite I can have?  I'll send you some stuff in return, like.

Sorry about the large font size, I just thought it would draw attention to me as opposed to anyone else, because I'm a selfish cunt.

HAHAHAHA

Timmay

If you're really desperate, you can go buy an invite from eBum for about a quid.

Abbie

I'm luvin it luvin it luvin it!  GMAIL rulez!1!

I decided not to use my full name, as some weirdo rang me the other day thanks to a mailing list I joined with a real name email account.  What is the world coming to?

GMAIL is very easy to use, far far easier than hotmail, and rather than having big flashy ads all over the screen you have relevant discreet ads to the right.  Relevant but currently all American....

...except it doesn't have a damned draft facility.

Anyway, I'm liking it too. I've even gone so far as to start moving all my old Outlook mail across to it. See here - http://www.marklyon.org/gmail/default.htm. Taking a while, and it's not gonna be in chronological order, but hey, it's Google, so you can search it!

*ahem* notepad.

yay @ marklyon's link - he's a regular poster over @ arstechnica...a nice enough guy - good luck to him i say.

does anyone know when the beta test period is finished?

probably when google gets the 'results' it wants. as a gmail user, i feel that it is about as good as it can be, so they should just OPEN IT UP TO THE PUBLIC ALREADY!!!

Timmay

They're not going to open it up until sufficient numbers of people already have accounts. Because of the hype surrounding Gmail, if they were to have opened it up to the public, their servers would probably have sunk under the immediate huge demand.

At least this way (using invites) they are in control of how quickly the system expands, and can scale the hardware up accordingly. And if it adds a hint of exclusivity in the process with some free advertising, great!

VorpalSword

hype? i've had to explain to 15 different people today what gmail is and why it's so great.  then again, this is rural dorset, the place where computers were at first  written off as 'unuseful' when the inbreds found that a cpu couldn't do farmwork.

Rubbish Monkey

ah bumhug. looks like i'm looking for invites then. thanks for the info.

yes! greece 1-0

*cough* eBum *sneeze* around £1.50 *splutter*

Careful of sniping in the last 10 seconds though - these auctions are rife with that. Look for some cheap (<£2) auctions on Buy It Now when you get fed up with it. ;)

Did anyone else on hotmail get an email the other day telling them that they will be receiving an upgrade to their account to 250MB?! for free apparently! (aswell as the ability to send attachments up to 10 MB)

I thought at first that everybody must be getting it.....maybe as some sort of response by hotmail to this gmail butt i've asked a few people and none have got it too.

"You are receiving this message because you are a valued MSN Hotmail customer."

"We'd like to thank you for being a valued MSN Hotmail Member and look forward to telling you about more exciting changes to your Hotmail account in the coming months. "

Can't be just me surely, It's a massive upgrade from my standard 2MB account =/

Pinball

Hmmm. Extra storage is good, but it's still Echelon City. Email is not quite as public as shouting on the streets, but it's close. Now if they offered a PGP button, I'd be interested....! :-)

Timmay

...I'm sure anyone with some web plugin programming experience could produce something that rips the text out of the message, and decrypts/encrypts it. Mate of mine wrote a PGP plugin for MSN a while ago - might be worth me prodding him actually.
