But that's not a reason to attack him ad hominem, on the basis that his posh background must be reflected in his political views...

Well, no and I'm not advocating more ad hominem attacks on the bloke. But what you're dealing with here is class war to some extent. His privileged background formed his world view (anyone's world view is going to be influenced by their background). This doesn't mean that all people from this or that public school or this or that comprehensive will all have exactly the same opinions. But Boris Johnson's right wing politics and his attitude is a reflection of his background. Some people dislike those views and the fact that people should have a privileged background in the first place. And the people who argue most vehemently in favour of upper middle class values are the right wing Tories. Boris Johnson is among their number. People are not just judging him on his background - Tony Benn is even posher - but by their politics shall they be judged.

But it's equally true that George Orwell's background influenced his politics. Read The Road To Wigan Pier.

Of course.

What is he supposed to have said about "creationism"? Incidentally it's not completely mad to favour nuclear power, as I know at least 1 committed Green who thinks nuclear power should be "reconsidered" as a possible way to increase non-fossil fuel-based energy.

Lest we forget, Joe Strummer and Shane Macgowan went to public school.  But they dropped out because it was full of cunts.  And Stephen Fry got expelled.  Maybe the hate should be reserved for people who enjoyed public school?

He's committed to the Truth In Science bollocks that set up in trust schools teaching creationism alongside evolution in science classes and made a statement calling secularism a state-driven evil or something. I'll find it later.

QuoteAnd the people who argue most vehemently in favour of upper middle class values are the right wing Tories.

Not all of them though. Thatcher and Tebbit represented right-wing middle class values. Thathce even attacked Tony Benn for wanting to remove grammer schools while having benefited from public schools.

Backstage With Slowdive

Thatcher, of course, closed more grammar schools than anyone else when she was Education Secretary in the 70s.

"Thatcherism" is an abstraction believed in by clueless Oxford grads like Boris. Thatcher herself was actually an average changing-with-the-weather Tory hack who just learned the trick of simulating high principle and stern inflexibility, whilst fiddling with policy all the time. She lost her touch she started to believe all the crap herself and genuinely made a stand over the Poll Tax.

Blair was the heir of Thatcher.

Actually It's pretty mad to no favour nuclear power, especially if you give a crap about climate change.

I think a lot of environmentalists take the sack-cloth and ashes view of the future.  The only way for humanity to not be engulfed by climate change is for us all to live in huts made of our own shit or at the very least use less energy than we use now.  However, I think that humanity needs to use more and more energy and nuclear provides us with that option without the problems of carbon emitting fossil fuels.

Spot Boris and Win a Mountain Bike

"Dear Boris-site

I spotted Mr J coming out of the Love-a-Rub massage parlour in Finsbury Park last night. Send me the bike, or the Standard gets the negatives.

Yrs etc"

There's a section on the website offering you the opportunity to back Boris. I took him up on the offer:

I highlighted my name in purple.

Bogey

I like his "idea"* about new Routemasters.

Bendy buses are stupid and pointless and shit.

*I also thought of it, show me prototypes, etc.

Pinball

Tory Etonian leadership nepotism is deeply embarrassing. Only a cretin could lose to Labour currently, and, y'know, I think Cameron may pull it off.

Rev

He's sitting in for James Whale tonight on Talksport, from 10 until 1.  Just in case anyone fancies giving him a call.

Pinball, when are you going to admit that you're a Tory?

Quote from: Ciarán on August 28, 2007, 06:10:32 PMHe's a Tory - the last thing they want is to, as you say, dismantle the class divide.

If Noo Labour claim a desire to dismantle the class divide they are either naive or just patronising the gullible numbers in it's electorate. The only sure fire way to get rid of the class system is a Communist regime. Our current government could criminalise the terms upper, middle, working and under class tomorrow. They would still exist and people would use other terms to pigeon hole socially, such as the A, B, C, D etc. There will always be an underclass of drop-outs, addicts, the mentally-challenged and the criminally-minded. There will also always be a working backbone who keep the infrastructure going and their own heads just above the financial water. There'll always be doctors, scientists, writers, teachers. And there'll always be idle rich. It's inevitable in a free society, isn't it?

That said, Boris will be a rubbish mayor but as long as he doesn't invite terrorists for tea and cakes he'll be a better man than Livingstone.
And Boris is a misogynist? I'd find his bumbling overtures less offensive than the alleged unwarranted gropings of a pie-eating former steward riding high on the gravy train and thinking he's God's Gift.

Sorry for the rant. My foot is broken and I've been off work for 11 days.

FFS - I think not! I said they'd lose...

Conversely, cutting the shit, let's see an equally destructive smear campaign against Cuddly Commie Ken. He is after all a Stalinist.

Believe me, I'm under no illusions about "Noo" Labour as you call them - of course they have vested interests too - especially since the abolition of Clause 4. But I disagree with your points about what kinds of societies are possible. But then I'm a bit of a utopian socialist. And an old romantic. (And a New Romantic too!)

Is Johnson's main policy really "I'll bring back the old buses, eh what terror-wallah"?

Isn't this based on one letter he supposedly sent the Truth In Science people and which he denies having ever sent them?

(I'm not defending him, I kind of wish it was true!)

Shoulders?-Stomach!

If he's denying sending it, then I'll retract the accusation. The homophobia stuff and virtually everything else about him still repels me immensely.
