I've seen this strange, seemingly random hyphenation on lots of online news articles. Why? It's not even as if the hyphen is in the right place. If anything, you'd think it would be in between the "im" and the "balance".

As a slight aside, there's a company called Hy-phen.

My guess is that the hyphen is placed there in the copy placed in the actual newspaper as the word spans two lines. This is rather carelessly not removed when the entire article is copy and pasted into the website.
