So the 'songs to break your heart to' thread is great, and I've put together a little survey of sorts because I'm interested in what music helps people do certain things. Try to keep it short, preferably with one artist/song/album/genre per answer please! I'm gonna end up going against that rule myself anyway, so whatever. Here goes!

What do you listen to when...
You have a hangover - Radiohead - Sail To The Moon, Ratatat's first album, Royksopp - Melody AM (album)
You're at work and need motivating - Venetian Snares and lots of drum n bass
You're getting ready to hit the town - RJD2 - Dead Ringer (album)
You've received good news/good times are on the horizon - RJD2 - Ghostwriter, Green Day - Dookie/Insomniac (albums)
You cannot face the world - Efterklang - Tripper (album), lots of classical piano, preferably Erik Satie
You feel like glassing some prick - Venetian Snares - Chocolate Wheelchair (album), Virus Syndicate - The Work Related Illness (album)
You're off your mash on ecstasy pipes (stoned in other words) - Glitch-hop stuff like Flying Lotus, Machine Drum, etc. and anything by Four Tet, preferably the Dialogue album
You've just woke up - Whatever took my fancy before I went to bed
You're getting ready to go to bed - Whatever I was downloading at the time
You just need to relax for some reason or other - Final Fantasy piano versions, Four Tet, King Tubby

Great idea for a thread!

What do you listen to when...

You have a hangover...
The Carpenters 'Close To You' Gentle, soft melodic pop. Karen Carpenter's voice is more soothing than Alka Seltzer, more satisfying than a greasy fry-up.

You're at work and need motivating...
The Damned 'New Rose' This is my rolling-the-sleeves-up and getting to work music. It has to be up loud. Only then I can get the wallpapering/ spring cleaning/ essay done.

You're getting ready to hit the town...
Stevie Wonder 'Uptight' I'm a sucker for old Motown, so any Motown classic will do. Especially if it's upbeat.

You've received good news/good times are on the horizon...
Chic 'Good Times' It's not just word-association, this is a thrilling piece of music.

You cannot face the world...
Scott Walker 'Plastic Palace People' When I'm down I like to be transported to another place entirely. The images which Scott Walker's ornate, strange songs conjure up always do the trick. Listening to 'Plastic Palace People' is like watching a film.

You feel like glassing some prick...
When I'm angry? Sorry I'm a bit stumped on this one. I don't associate music and anger. If I'm in a pub in Dublin and feeling a bit pissed off, it's probably becuase I'm being subjected to god-awful indie rock music, so I find myself wanting to hear something defiantly pop. Richard X featuring Kelis 'Finest Dreams' would do the trick. It's not that well known, but trust me it's a Human League-sampling joy.

You're off your mash on ecstasy pipes (stoned in other words)...
I don't do the drugs, so I'll swap that for beer and tell you what I want to hear when I'm pissed. Something teary and tragic... Ike and Tina Turner 'River Deep Mountain High' Or The Smiths 'Never Had No-one Ever' which is a good song to sway to if you're so pissed you're barely able to stay on your feet.

You've just woke up...
Minnie Riperton 'Loving You' or Clifford T Ward 'Wherewithall' Easy-on-the-ear mid 70s AOR. Nothing too profound or taxing, just something gentle I can listen to as I stick on some toast. I'd usually have the radio on that hour of the morning actually.

You're getting ready to go to bed...
Joni Mitchell' The Last Time I Saw Richard' The entire 'Blue' album is perfect late night listening. And its last track, which I've chosen here, is a great bed-time story with the perfect musical ending.

You just need to relax for some reason or other...
Brian Eno 'Thursday Afternoon' It's impossible to describe this 61 minute long piece so I won't try to. Ideal for relaxing to though.

Mmm, this is a good thread.

You have a hangover - I guess 'Dum Dum Boys' by Iggy Pop because it sounds like a hangover. Come to think of it, all of 'The Idiot'
You're at work and need motivating - Usually uptempo stuff but especially 'Homework' by Daft Punk.
You're getting ready to hit the town - That would be the self-titled debut album by Electronic
You've received good news/good times are on the horizon - 'I Want To Take You Higher' by Sly and the Family Stone. Also, the entire album 'Drums & Wires' by XTC.
You cannot face the world - One album for that - 'Closer' by Joy Division
You feel like glassing some prick - I was going to say The Clash, but 'Nicotine Stain' by Siouxise and the Banshees sounds very angry.
You're off your mash on ecstasy pipes (stoned in other words) - 'Run Come Save Me' by Roots Manuva because he was clearly off his head while he made it too.
You've just woke up - Quite aptly, 'Morning Bell' by Radiohead.
You're getting ready to go to bed - 'In A Silent Way' by Miles Davis as a whole album.
You just need to relax for some reason or other - It's a difficult one but I would say 'Tha' by Aphex Twin.

You've just reminded me of that, thanks. It's a brilliant song but I haven't listened to it for ages. I'll have to get Apathy and Exhaustion out and give it another play.

You just need to relax for some reason or other - Panda Bear - Person Pitch (album)

Absolutely sublime album from Animal Collective drummer Noah Lennox. Beach Boys-inspired summertime folk stuff, droning psychedelia and beautiful vocal harmonies. Everyone should own this album, especially AC fans.

NoSleep

All albums (I'll think of more later)

Hangover - Benjamin Lew & Steven Brown: Douzieme Journee: Le Verbe, La Parure, L'amour. I would usually stick this on and retire back to bed.

Cleaning the house - Beck: Odelay. I don't know why, it just worked. Maybe the hoover was in tune with it or something.

Reading/browsing - Miles Davis - Almost anything he recorded from '69 to '75. This is great to have on as background music, and if you pause from the work there's plenty to focus in on within the music. Perfect.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

I find anything by Oasis great for the vacuuming.
