Not sure how I feel about this. Magic Rock was the first 'craft' brewery I visited in 2012 back when it was a tiny premises and they were labelling bottles by hand. Richard was a really great host, taking the time on a weekend to show us about and talk to us about the trade and their plans, despite the fact that the brewery wasn't a public tap room and was in its infancy. Even back then it was clear they were thinking several moves ahead and their success comes as no great surprise. Aside from the money, I get the responsibility they must feel towards their own employees which I guess now must number 50+. Still a bit of a shame though and I get the animosity and fear that brands like beavertown and magic rock are getting acquired

The lines in their old brewery yard in 2012, with their old branding:

Shoulders?-Stomach!

The main thing deep down is keeping the beer the same quality. I'm not convinced that will be the case but there are plenty of brands managed by enormous macros that are still religiously well-maintained, or in Pilsner Urquell's case, actually improved (since Asahi took over anyway).

More widely, maybe one day people who drink these brands because fuck mainstream beer man will realise that tropical/bitter tangerine coloured gunky keg APA/session IPA sold as a gateway option between lager and supposedly "real beer" isn't actually as nice or as flavourful as proper Czech pils or Belgian blonde beer, most of the time. The problem with lager isn't that it's not nice, it's that we get the scrag end shittest stuff imaginable.

Fuck sake

I quite like it, but it doesn't belong in this thread!!!

They were well priced anyway, but an extra 10% off. The price for the Isidor is bonkers and you won't find tripels or quads so cheap very often.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

With La Trappe being 10% off the entire range all month and the aid of this discount code:

(enter at checkout)

...adding a further 10% off everything, I've just picked up 16 beers for £31.82 and free delivery from BeerWulf. Would recommend.

The Tripel Kannunik is one of the nicest Tripels I've had, and it's on at £1.99 at the moment - effectively £1.80 with the discount, which is just absurd. I picked up 4 bottles.

Cuntbeaks

Just ordered a load of the Isid'or. Bought a La Trappe tasting pack a few months ago and it was my favourite. Hadn't had a Quadrupel in years either and I fair enjoyed that, so got a few of those as well.

I see that Beerhawk now stock Liefmans Kriek Brut for a decent price, shame they're out of stock.

Shoulders!

Could you advise me to buy some beers please.

I basically want a good lager/easy drinking ale - I particularly like the creamyish flavour you sometimes get with beers like Tripel Karmeliet or more lagery Pivo Tank Beer.

Any ideas?

fatguyranting

I'm so pie and mash beer wise I rarely tend to go beyond the most basic of generic fizzy lagers, which is a shame as my friend has recently set up a brewery that is getting amazing reviews and critical acclaim from craft enthusiasts both in the UK and across Europe.

They specialise in foraged ingredients they find in and around their site in Somerset, some of which strike me as quite peculiar for my vanilla tastes but probably well worth a look for those who like to explore the more 'free jazz' end of things: www.brewyonder.co.uk

Shoulders?-Stomach!

The Tripel Karmeliet mention threw me there as although it's very pleasant to drink, at 8% and deceptively easy to drink, I wouldn't chalk it up in the easy category.

To help zone in on a few I will recommend some Belgian blondes and tripels and lagers you may be able to either shop for or order online which have that creamy, yeasty, biscuity thing you apparently enjoy.

Belgians:

Tripel Karmeliet
Wilderen Tripel
Straffe Hendrick
Bernardus Tripel
Leffe Tripel (surprisingly lovely)
Delerium Tremens
Corsendonk Tripel
St Feuillien Tripel
Bornem Blonde
La Trappe Tripel

Lagers are tougher because there isn't a great choice in supermarkets or online, but independent German helles lager and pils can be found on Beers of Europe for example.

For whatever reason lager seems to be more trial and error with people so reticent to suggest anything specific.

If you were actually going to Germany or Czechia I'd recommend what to get on tap, but a bottle is like having a different (worse) drink where with Belgian the fermentation in the bottle tends to improve it even further.

Lagers: hmm

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Sorry if that 2nd part was a shit answer.

I'll just post some good or at least notch superior lagers and leave you with the task of trying to find them

Tank Pilsner Urquell
Poutnik
Hajdu Lokal
Bernard Unfiltered
Bernard 12° Unpasteurised
Uneticke 12°
Svijany Kvasnicak 13°
Beskydsky Lezak
Chotebor
Kout 12°
Konrad 12°
Kamenice 12°
Krahulik 12°
Pernstejn Vilem 11°
Fabian 12°
Sonne Urtyp Helles

Gambrinus Nefiltrovany
Policce 10°
Andechs Vollbier Hell
Ayinger Helles
Primator 11°

Purity Brewing are really good. Pure UBU is a tasty pint but their Longhorn Rye IPA really nails just how much better cask ale is than keg ale.

Alright then - which beer should I absolutely get a pint of in the UK.

I am gasping for a pint of mild.

Best beer I can get at the waitrose round the corner from my parents?

Correct answer, I love mild but barely get to drink it....

If it's something Brit(ish) that you're after then Ghost Ship and Timmy Taylor's Landlord are both good beers they should have, they also do Harvistoun beers and they are great. I imagine they'll have a raft of American style beer too, and anything by Wiper and True, Northern Monk, Redchurch and Wild Beer is worth a go.

Sold! I've sent this list to myself as a reminder next time somebody goes to the shops. Will post reviews, though I didn't go to bed last night so no beers tonight. Barely functioning as it is.

Took me three of four goes to type out the above.

Beavertown beer is without a shadow of a doubt worse than previously. And last night I noticed their seasonal blood orange IPA Bloody Ell' (7.4%) has been been changed to a 5.5% tall streak of piss. Tastes like they use a flavour concentrate. Very inoffensive, totally uninspiring, great utility for chucking down your throat on a hot summers day by the £5 pint. It's a bit like those fizzy waters you get with a hint of fruit. But beer. A bit shit, basically. I had a sip and moved directly to the Paulaner lager which does the same job but doesn't taste like a child's drink

A family member used to work for Beaverton, and I understand the staff left en masse and transferred to other breweries in London.

Couldn't tell you which brewery they went to because my memory is shite, but talking about beer enables me to be a trans-continental bore.

Norton Canes

Had a couple of pints of London Fields Brewery's 3 Weiss Monkeys last night. Billed as a 'IPA & wheat beer hybrid', my unsophisticated palette was unable to ascertain what made it IPA-ey but the wheat flavour was exceptionally nice and it didn't have the sweetness of a regular German wheat beer so it felt a lot sharper. Bit expensive but very drinkable, would recommend.

Tripel Karmeliet

Haven't been able to find anything more interesting than Abbot Ale, Greene King IPA, and all the other Pints 4 Gammons.

Staying in a very conservative district to be fair, must be what they all go for.

Keeping an eye out in case I see anything interesting.

I'm going to Graz in a few months. Looks like drinking beer is an occupation there. Is there a beer anyone could recommend while there?

Ah fair enough, last couple of times I've been in a Waitrose they've all had Tripel Karmeliet, thought it was universal.

Get some Carlsberg in you.

Austria is a bit shit for pubs

Steirer Pub and The Office Pub seem OK.

Had a Tsingtao for the first time in years last night, after several better beers.

That stuff is terrible, but old-school terrible, like keg Stones or Becks bottled. Misery.

It's basically got "sup this you fucking cunts" written all over it. Or it might have said something else. You never know with these Chinese.

Rolling Rock very much in the same category.

All those people who say 'I hate beer', are because their experience is of beers like these.
