It's the usual suspects, but quite a few surprises dotted about too

Here's the top 25, can't really argue with the top 2 much. The top 100 is a bit heavy on the Star Wars/LOTR films for my taste but it's to be expected I suppose.

   1. The Godfather
   2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
   3. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
   4. The Shawshank Redemption
   5. Jaws
   6. GoodFellas
   7. Apocalypse Now
   8. Singin' In The Rain
   9. Pulp Fiction
  10. Fight Club
  11. Raging Bull
  12. The Apartment
  13. Chinatown
  14. Once Upon A Time In The West
  15. The Dark Knight
  16. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  17. Taxi Driver
  18. Casablanca
  19. The Godfather Part II
  20. Blade Runner
  21. The Third Man
  22. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
  23. Back To The Future
  24. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  25. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Waking Life

These lists always remind me of films that I have yet to see, but been meaning to.  Needless to say I never get around to watching most of them.

The 500 films on the list was actually more varied than I thought it would be to be fair.  Certainly in regards to European cinema anyway, although it started becoming far more predictable towards the top end.  Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull made a surprising appearance.  As did Saw...

I actually submitted my top 10 for this list and only 1 made it into the top 20.

Re: The top 25 - I know these lists are created to annoy, but I think this is worse than usual, a lot of them wouldn't even make my top 100. It's so blokey, featuring all the films that Empire regularly drool over, and I could list so many films that don't make the list. I mean, the absence of any foreign language films in the top 25 instantly shows that it's deeply flawed.

From those 25, I'd only have these in my top 100

Quote
3. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
6. GoodFellas
12. The Apartment
13. Chinatown
16. 2001: A Space Odyssey
21. The Third Man

And most would be much lower on the list. Oh, and it should be Back To The Future Part 2 that makes the list, everyone knows that's the best film in the trilogy.

George Oscar Bluth II

When doing these kind of lists the compilers should always exclude anything made within the last 5 years. The Dark Knight's great and all, but surely we need to wait for it to sink in before proclaiming it to be the fifteenth best film ever made. It needs to stand the test of time. There's a few that weren't really hits or critical successes at their release on the list, Fight Club and Shawshank are the obvious examples.

Can't argue with most of the other films on the list though.

Except for Superman Returns at 496. And Star Wars stuff being wildly overrated.

I noticed that one made the top 500 at 489 or something though

Quite shocked that Barry Lyndon isn't in the list at all, saw that recently and thought it was magnificent

  25. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Out of that top 25, those are the only ones I really give a monkeys about, and everyone knows that The Two Towers is the best of the LOTR films. Seeing that they put Saw and Scream in the top 500 of all time, even if it's in the bottom 25, tells me all I need to know, I'm completely out of touch with the rest of the world.

Can't be arsed waiting for that bloody lot to load. Is Brazil in there anywhere? Easily superior to most of that largely-predictable Top 25.

Nah, only Empire readers, and if you agreed with all their tastes you'd miss out on a million* wonderful movies.

*That might be a slight exaggeration. Anyway, I'll stop now, I guess I'm just so annoyed as Empire started off as such a great magazine, and it's depressing to see how shallow it tends to be these days.

pulsifer

Great to see Ben-Hur up there at #491 (with Sweeny Todd - the Demon Barber at #490 and Brick (!) at #489).

What a bunch of shit.

Very silly stuff - deliberately so, surely. All yer teenage boy fodder and a few received opinion classics.

"Man, you've GOT to watch 2001, the bit at the end is like deep, man!"

That said, I do think it's an amazing film, one of my top 25 for sure but it sits very uneasily alongside much of their 'top' movies.

Another thing, Godfather Pt. 1 & 2 are virtually identical in my eyes - why does one supercede the other? It's not like they happened to bung out a great sequel, it's a direct continuation of source material with the exact same direction and equally brilliant performances.

Again, re: Dark Knight. No, no, no. Don't be silly. You can't possibly include it in this kind of list. I finally saw it the other day, some really good bits about morality, choices, consequences - I enjoyed that stuff, skilfully-written grey areas (though still using the broad strokes typical of the genre, not exactly subtle). The Joker was genuinely threatening and Ledger deserves all the plaudits he never received. Overall though, yes, fantastic superhero film, not actually a parable of our times though. I have to agree with Shoulders. A first.

Anyway, Empire - for people who enjoy watching films but aren't interested in the boring bits.

El Unicornio, mang

Well, it was voted for by readers of the magazine and film directors, lists are always utterly pointless but I don't see many glaring omissions in this one. As far as the top twenty five goes I don't see a bad film in there, although The Dark Knight sticks out like a sore thumb.

Emma Raducanu

The fact that Chungking Express isn't there (or at least in the top 100) renders the entire list null and void. Null and void.

And The Mirror (Zerkalo) not there. This list must be sponsored by Blockbuster Video.

Brazil is in at number 83.  Two places behind Batman Begins.

Manhattan is in at number 76.  No point at getting too wound up by these sorts of lists I guess, they're a bit very silly.

Goldentony

Good to see Blue Velvet, Evil dead 2, Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, His Girl Friday and The Wild Bunch in the top 500 but the top 3 choices are just totally expected and fucking boring to read about by now.

This seems as good a place as any to say that 2001 on Blu ray is an utter joy to behold. I think the film has been visually unsurpassed since its release.

By fuck is that an unsettling film. I watched it last night only for the second time, and realised sadly that it would never get made in today's mainstream. Three minutes of monged music at the beginning before you even see an image? The fact that not a single word is uttered for most of the second half? Not a fucking chance.

The Blu ray also has several interesting documentaries about the making of and the special effects, along with a comentary by Kier Dullea and Gary Lockwood, which I've yet to sit through. It really is a classy package and it's great to see that the Kubrick films are finally being given some decent treatment on DVD.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

The inclusion of The Dark Knight shows a pathetic lack of perspective.

Fight Club?? Which bag did they pull that one from? Oh wait, I know- The one marked 'much worse than it thinks it is'. Stupid smug self aware and grasping for cult status from the off.

I like the fact there's hardly any musicals but the lack of comedy films and foreign films deeply disturbs.

Couldn't give a fuck about the 500. Surely 100 is the highest you can go without seriously losing interest or credibility?

Here comes a list based on the whims of personal taste - I haven't seen all of their top 25 by the way- This isn't in any order:

Spoiler alert
1. Coming To America
2. Pans Labyrinth
3. The Hitcher
4. The Edukators
5. Downfall
6. Dawn Of The Dead
7. Don't Look Now
8. LOTR: Fellowship Of The Ring
9. Monty Python: Holy Grail
10. A Clockwork Orange
11. Puppet On A Wire
12. Trading Places
13. Groundhog Day
14. What Dreams May Come
15. Minority Report
16. Stakeout
17. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
18. Logan's Run
19. The Counterfeiters
20. The 39 Steps (1978)
21. Apocalypse Now
22. Taxi Driver
23. The Ice Storm
24. Etre et Avoir
25. The Shining
[close]

Stemming from how much I enjoyed them rather than The Empire list to grind away at a list which is influenced by other lists and will inevitably form this sort of indomitable wall sheltering these supposed classics from criticism.

I didn't think it was very provocative at all (not that it should have been).

I found making my own list quite confusing and difficult and not very enjoyable, I only hope these were the emotions suffered by the Empire staff. Though given they had 500 the attitude was probably to chuck any old shit in.

thugler

they seem to have this every year now, each time more ridiculous and longer. 'The public' are shit at picking the best films ever. Though 'THE BEST FILMS EVER' is a stupid idea anyway. Better to divide it up into genre or something.

#17
Dr Strangelove is only at number 26!  Life of Brian at number 203?!!!   The Exorcist is at number 206, Mark Kermode must be doing his nut.

When you go above 300 in that listing it goes really scattergun.

Tokyo Sexwhale

The lack of comedy in the Top 25 is ridiculous, as is the lack of Hitchcock.

And fucking Star Wars appearing twice - it's just a big advert for toys - it's got about as much depth as He-man and the Masters of the Universe.

Great post, Shoulders. Especially the last line.

madhair60

Well, what did you expect from Empire?  If your answer isn't "wank", your answer is wrong.

Yup, that would only get in the Top 20 of the Most Shitty, Self-Satisfied Movies Ever list, in my opinion.

But then it's at least a decade since I realised that all of these lists are only fluffy filler – in the eyes of those who compile them, of the journalists who knock up stories about them, and nearly everyone who reads them. It's only a small group who like to test their blood pressure by taking such tripe seriously.

500? Don't worry, in five years time they'll do their Top 1000 films of all time. The longer the list the more meaningless it becomes.

Ah, I know, but it tooks an age to read through it on the Empire site, so I thought I'd painstakingly type it out for everyone just so they could be angered more quickly. Er, that or I just stole it from another forum. It's one or the other. And I noticed that they've so many covers, I presumed it would be one for each of the 100 best films, but that doesn't seem to be the case as there's an Amelie one, despite the film only coming in at 196 - which is another reason to dismiss the list as pointless.

Quoteno Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me?

Like you I wasn't surprised, but it definitely should be on the list, I think it's easily one of his best films and really didn't deserve the critical bashing it got on release.
