Ever used that 'Genius' thing in Itunes?  By some algorithm or other (via the Itunes store), it'll put together a playlist 'based' on a chosen track -- try 'Highway to Hell' and you'll get a lot of hard rock and more 'old-fashioned' heavy stuff, for example, with a few left-fielders in there.  Can have some neat/amusing results, and it's a bit more interesting than what ordinary shuffle comes up with.  Has a tendency to put the Pistols' "God Save The Queen" into every list though, which is a bit bizarre when the list basis was, say, Ann Peebles...

Itunes gets a lot of reflexive complainers, but I switched to it after winamp mysteriously stopped working one or two computers ago, and the library focus of it is a godsend compared to that winamp mess.  It probably doesn't help that my winamp-using buddies are the most disorganised people on the planet, so I've unfairly come to think of locating and playing a song in Winamp as more of an arcane fuckaround than it really is, but whatever; if I want a song in Itunes, there it is.  That said, the inability to enqueue tracks with a keystroke IS an insane deficiency of Itunes (that fiddly fucking 'Party Shuffle' does NOT count).

purlieu

That, and it slows your computer down to a snail's pace.

Does it?  Hmm, maybe I'm just spoiled for RAM/cycle-busyness.  Hurrah for gaming rigs!

Yeah, I've never understood the iTunes hate. I've tried all the alternatives; Winamp, foobar, WMP (ha), media monkey etc and none of them are as easy for me to use. Sure the inbuilt iTunes store is irritating and it's a resource hog, but I've got lots of resources to hog so I don't really mind. /smug

There's 24 of my top 25 (the other one that comes up is a demo of a song I wrote that I listened to over and over to make sure it was ok).

I LOVE iTunes, and the saddest day of my life was when my first ipod died, losing 3 years worth of playcount data, as I'd recently been forced to stop syncing it to the library on my computer after a Windows reinstall.

I don't know why it's so satisfying to know exactly how many times I've listened to a particular song, or know to the minute exactly when I last heard it, but it really is.

Gradual Decline

For those of you that don't like iTunes, but want something like iTunes: Song Bird

hoverdonkey

I'm with you Jackson, I'm constantly checking when I last listened to a song. My playcount has been distorted by the fact that Thomas would only go to sleep to the sound of No Cars Go by Arcade Fire for the first four months of his life so is about 100 plays ahead of second place.

thugler

I also like itunes, it's easier to make it do what I want than winamp or foobar, and reads tags of things properly most of the time.

Massive resource hog though, thats the only thing.

To the tagger, I don't listen to classical music on my laptop and shitty speakers cos it doesn't do it justice. Classical music rarely sounds good in mp3 format. No, I listen to my classical music the old fashioned way - from a CD on a stereo with good speakers.

samadriel

If that's not Mutebanana, he's done his homework.

"from a CD" is the old-fashioned way now?  Surely you should be pushing vinyl, Sam, if not live recital!

("Pushing vinyl" = Rod Stewart desperate for the lavatory circa 1978)

...

("Pushing tin" = Harold Godwinson looking out to sea circa 1066.)

The old fashioned bit was meant ironically and I almost used scare quotes.

Oh this reminds me of this funny Mr Show sketch.
