Tokyo! trailer.

I haven't been this excited by a trailer in a while-the music, imaginative visuals and cool use 80s-style titles have me hoping this is lives up to expectations. Plus Gondry and Bong 'The Host' Joon-ho's involvement is another plus. Haven't seen any of Leos Carex's films. Anyway, looking forward to this.

Yes that looks frickin awesome.

Went to see Punisher: Warzone last night. I'm not a massive fan of the comics, despite liking Garth Ennis a lot, so can't say for sure if it's an accurate portrayl of the character but if you are after a gleefully violent comic book film I'd recommend it.

It's shit obviously, utterly rubbish, but the absurd level of violence and the fact that 'McNutty' from The Wire delivers one of the most crazed performances I've ever seen justified the two hours. I can't even accurately describe his performance to be honest. It's not good, but likewise it's not that he couldn't be arsed. He seems to have just decided to act in a purposefuly ludicrous way throughout the film regardless of the tone of the rest of the picture, which is fairly serious.

Considering I got in free my judgement of whether it's any good or not is tainted obviously (I probably wouldn't spend £7 on it), but I would love to see a sequel made.

State of Play remake
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Play_(film)

Saw the trailer at the cinema, had no idea they had actually made the film beforehand and said "This looks like State of Play"

I wish they had done a Frost/Nixon and just cast the originals

What, Frost and Nixon?

I'm hesitant to watch that trailer cos I loved the series. Looking back, it really was a top-notch cast, wasn't it? With quite a few names all over Hollywood at the moment.

David Morrissey
John Simm
Kelly Macdonald
Polly Walker
Bill Nighy
Philip Glenister
James McAvoy

Heh! You know what I mean. They could have easily got rid of Langella and Sheen for not being Hollywood enough(as they did with many of the original Broadway/West End cast). Morrissey would have been far better than Affleck

And I see that Jason Bateman is in 'State Of Play' too! That'll be interesting.

Yeah, I'm really not sure  I want to see the film as I watched the tv series only last year, and I thought it was a masterpiece.  Part of its brilliance was the fact that it was a long-form story, yet it never really let up.  I really can't see a two hour movie being anywhere near as strong.  I bet the tv series hasn't been released in the US either, and only might get a release to coincide with the film.  (Like the japanese version of The Ring, which in the US didn't get released until after the US version, and had a fucking awful DVD cover design and was named "Ringu", which is simply the japanese pronounciation of "Ring", and many others.)

What the blazes is going on here:

Quote from: GuardianElton John's Rocket Pictures is developing a new spin on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, this time featuring a nefarious seven-foot extraterrestrial with hideous mandibles and a penchant for human blood. Yes, it's Pride and Predator.

"It felt like a fresh and funny way to blow apart the done-to-death Jane Austen genre by literally dropping this alien into the middle of a costume drama, where he stalks and slashes to horrific effect," Furnish told Variety.

"Pride and Predator"? Amazing or utter, utter shit?

redgonewild

Looking forward to Inglorious Basterds, noticed B. J. Novak in the line up of soldiers. Also wouldn't mind seeing the new Street Fighter film coming out later this year, i'm a fan of shit videogame adaptions.

Someone in the production team clearly reads Rule7, as I came up with the idea for "Jane Austen's Aliens" in October 2006 and the LRP version of it is finally happening later this year. The first one is called "Aliens and Alienation", which is a blatantly superior title (although not as good as the followup, Chestburster Abbey).

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a young man, being pursued by ravening xenomorphs, must be in want of a pulse rifle in the 40 watt range."

"Nay, mama, would it not be more correct to say 'Get away from her thou bitch'?"

Nearly two and a half years ago. Elton's mates are a bunch of *ahem* unoriginal oiks.

I can't work out how you can sell a script called 'Pride and Predators' (I found out about this script a few months ago, because I've been pitching my own Austen genre movie outline, and people seemed annoyingly unfazed by the idea), because the first thing that would have to go is the title, surely, if it's about predatory xenomorphs, what with 'Predator' being copyrighted. So the obvious selling point could never make it on to the final posters.

Elton/Furnish's only previous film: not-good bodyswap comedy 'It's A Boy/Girl Thing', so not a great track record really. Not that I'm jealous or anything.

Mine was taking Austen's three unfinished novels, and imagining she'd got bored with social romances, and decided to write a Bourne Identity-style trilogy of conspiracy thrillers. Only still set in 18th C England obviously. I still think it's a cool idea.

Fuckin' sold, mate!

Would you consider doing it as a graphic novel trilogy?  PM me if you're interested in the idea, we'll have a chat and I'll try and put you in contact with people who may be able to help out with the illustration, publication etc.  The way to get obscure ideas made these days is, it seems, to make them as graphic novels first and then sell the movie rights.

Went to a test screening last night of a film about Northern Soul, which had the 'working title' Soul Boy*.  Certainly most of it was pretty enjoyable, generally fairly good period detail, the recreation of the Wigan Casino seemed very realistic based on what I've read, and there were plenty of nice detailed touches elsewhere.  Soundtrack naturally v.good also.  Unfortunately the plot let it down, I saw the end coming from a mile off and there was an obligatory preachy 'drugs iz BAD!'-type scene, and I thought it was trying too hard to be a Northern Soul 'Billy Elliott'.  However, probably worth catching if you fancy a fairly light Friday-night type film, and/or want to know a bit more about NS.

(*the post-film questionnaire had other suggestions for titles - to which I suggested Out On The Floor)

Shit news about Total Recall remake.

This is getting fucking ridiculous. Since Hollywood is already remaking Robocop, they may as well plunder the rest of Paul Verhoeven's back catalogue. Betcha they'll announce Starship Troopers next. If we're lucky, we may even get a less shit version of Hollow Man eventually.

I can't see them attempting Turkish Delight or Spetters though, more's the pity.

Wasn't it reported that the Robocop film in development is a sequel rather than a remake? Taken seriously, a sequel is something I'd have no problem with at all.

If that's the case, fine. I can see the point in another sequel or 'reboot', but never a remake. The imdb page for the new film states it's a remake though.

I just watched it again the other night and it's still perfect. Clarence Boddicker and his gang of giggling sociopaths are my favourite villains of all time. I almost want them to triumph in the end.

VegaLA

I do think 'Total Recall' has dated terribly, as has 'Robocop'.
Something like 'Zombie Flesh-eaters' still looks fresh to this day.
If they do remake that though there should be more gore.
And more zombies.

Jemble Fred

I heard that the Robocop remake was supposed to be more steampunk and ugly, a bit more of a Cronenberg take on the 'bringing a bloke back from the dead with technology' thing...

But it's no excuse. I'm going to get all smug and suggest that the people responsible could take the millions they plan to spend on the remake and put on special showings of the original movie for the homeless, with a warm meal thrown in. They'd feel so much better about themselves in the long run.

I should have stuck this instead of the others film thread but we dont have a delete option on this board so a bit of copying and pasting!

Gran Torino
Very good film and a fitting end to Clints acting career if it his last acting film. Its very funny as well, which initially teases us with the premise that it may be merely a revenge film but nope the ending is much more ambitious than that. The only downside is the child who Clint befriends is a  very ordinary actor though, which I suppose is a bit of a flaw!
Notorious
The film is very rushed and a very sanatised version of his life which hurts the movie big time. The two actors who play Diddy and Pac are shocking and look nothing like who they are playing. The fact that Pac has to be introduced in every scene and is consistently wearing a thuglife cap makes you suspect the people behind the film knew this as well. The guy who plays BIGGIE is good to be fair and it does remind us how awesome he was on the mic. I personally has not listened to him in years and is currently blaring out Who Shot Ya, so the movie does not have its plus points!

Vitalstatistix

Total Recall is still totally freakin' awesome. I watched it recently and I was surprised by how little it had dated. Remaking it is quite clearly an inane waste of time, but then everyone knows that...

VegaLA

OK.
I'm going to re-watch both films at the next opportunity. I did enjoy them at time of release so lets see how I feel about them now.

I saw 'StreetFighter: The stuff about Chun Li' today.

Do say a prayer for Chris Klein.

That said, scenes well worth getting off the sofa to go see it.

1# When Chun Li goes to the subway after the piano concer there are a couple of hot girls seen briefly.
2# When the Blonde Cop Woman enter's the Police precinct she does a 'Megan Fox' as she walks through the door.
3# Scene where Chun Li seduces Bison's dyke friend on the Dancefloor.
4# Club scene has some hot strippers running around.

I look forwards to the sequel.

Me too. It's fantastic to see Curtis getting his teeth into something that goes beyond upper-middle-class Londoners falling in love. And also something that's purely for entertainment, admirable though his charity work is.

This man created Blackadder, after all.
