I'm ignoring most of the rest of the thread and just listing some of my faves from what I consider Hip Hop's golden age...

Albums

Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown (ok I know it's been mentioned loads but it deserves many more mentions)
Jungle Brothers - Straight Out The Jungle / Done By The Forces Of Nature
EPMD - Strictly Business
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live The Kane / Big Daddy Thing
BDP - Well, you said you'd been downloading loads but Criminal Minded, By All Means and Ghetto Music : The Blueprint are the classics IMHO
Stetsasonic - In Full Gear
Tuff Crew - Danger Zone
MC Shan - Born To Be Wild
Biz Markie - Goin Off
Music Of Life Hustlers Convention 1989
Digital Underground - Sex Packets

Singles / Tracks

Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two
Icey J - It Takes A Real Man >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOOgcyIk4_A  (I love this as much as the Rob Base tune, check how she plays on the way Rob Base said 'sess' like 'sex'.  Whether she really thought he said 'sex' or not, she assumes that anybody who doesn't like sex must be gay.  Such a massive cock-up of a lyric but brilliant)
Ultramagnetic MCs - Funky (original) / Chorus Line (original)
Skinny Boys - Get Pepped / Stylin (both found on the LP 'Skinny, They Can't Get Enough')
Lakim Shabazz - Pure Righteousness
45 King - 900 Number
MC Kelz - Clash Of The Beat / Mix Me Down Maestro (Smith and Mighty production)
Eric B and Rakim - Eric B FOR President (The FOR is important, Eric B IS President is the inferior remix)
Run DMC - Run's House / Beats To The Rhyme
Marley Marl - The Symphony
Kool G Rap and Polo - Poison
JVC Force - Strong Island
Heavy D - The Overweight Lover's In The House
Queen Latifah - Wrath Of My Madness
Marley Marl and Craig G - Droppin' Science (There's a good mix and a bad one though)
Kid n Play - Do This My Way / Gettin Funky
Supererlover Cee & Casanova Rud - Girls Act Stupid-aly
MC EZ and Troup - Get Retarded
Hijack - Hold No Hostage / Doomsday of Rap / Badman Is Robbin
London Rhyme Syndicate - Hard To The Core
K-9 Posse - Ain't Nothing To It / This Beat Is Military
Roxanne Shante - Skeezer (from Lean On Me OST on Warners)
Big Daddy Kane - Lean On Me (from Lean on Me OST) / Wrath Of Kane
Steady B - I'm Serious
Masta Ace - Letter To The Better / I Got Ta
Cash Money - Mighty Hard Rocker

Compilations

Roxanne Shante - The Best Of Cold Chillin' - A better representation of Shante's work than 'Bad Sister' I reckon, has the classic 88 12" version of Go On Girl with the extra horns

OK, I'm gonna stop now, it's 1.30am near enough.

I'd suggest getting hold of MF DOOM's special blend mixes, old skool style hip hop remixed with his special herbs. There's some good shit in there and it'll point you in the direction of some solid artists which you have no doubt already heard of - Jeru the Damaja (no idea what his new stuff is like though - anyone?), Lord Finesse, Beatnuts ...

I'd also recommend Black Moon's Enta da Stage, released in 1993 along with a whole bunch of other amazing hip hop which has probably been covered in this thread.

Guru's Jazzmatazz series is well worth checking out as is Prince Pauls Politics Of The Buisness.

But Tonight i'm mostly listening to the UK Toaster and legend Smiley Culture.

If you can find it, somebody compiled all the singles in Ego Trip's Rap List book and there is probably a torrent of the lot out there.  I did find it all on a blog, but it wasn't very good quality.  Other blogs I found only had a few select years on them, eg 79 to 88.

Also, 88 is often considered Hip Hop's best year, the peak of it's excellence (let's face it, after Straight Out Of Compton it has mostly been downhill), so check out the blog 'Cold Rock The Spot', they've compiled 3 zips full of 1988 classics.

I like KMD's Black Bastards, does that count?

Yes. Probably my favourite hip hop album. Didn't really make its mark fully due to the controversial cover art and is not really catchy but the flow is just immense. Agressive and intelligent lyrics added to harsh beats that make todays commercial version of hip hop laughable.

Jungle Brothers probably best remembered for their brief foray into Hip-House with their chart hit "I'll House You",and club collaborations with the propellor heads but their sound on the whole was more a laid back jazz tip, so kick back relax and hit the mello dadio...nice

So when did raps golden age end?
If i had to pinpoint an exact time it would either be the delay of the second De La Soul albums caused by legal wrangling over copywrite clearances and the deaths of Biggy and Tupac,

Anyway tonights choice is Newcleus,A Brooklyn Act that was heavily influenced by Funkadelic, the Parliaments and Chuck Brown

I don't quite understand in what direction this thread is going, especially with the mention of UK grime, but anyways, I'll give you a few artists with iconic tunes which I feel represent the old school (even from my own little perspective):

Black Sheep- The Choice Is Yours

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4TElngNmxg

Big Daddy Kane- Ain't No Half Steppin (I thought I'd post the instrumentals as the full song has been nabbed off youtube, still the best beat to anything i've heard though)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5lDz66QhUc&feature=related

Planet Patrol- Play It At Your Own Risk

The Jonzun Crew- Pack Jam

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oACTHpQjzNs

2 Live Crew- 'Get It Girl'

MC Lyte- Lyte As A Rock

Run DMC- Anything they have ever done

Same here.

Also, it's likely not Old School as such, but this is superlative in simplicity, IMO.
