The Gambling Thread

Been meaning to start this for a while.  How many of you lot gamble on stuff?  Do you bet on sports on internet gambling sites, do you high roll in casinos, do you go down the dog track or blow money on the horses?  I thought gambling deserved a new thread (the old one kind of died) as some tips and discussion on the subject seems to get lost in the various sports threads, etc.

I've started messing around with a Betfair account (I went through quidco for 40 quid cashback) just for a bit of fun really, I've placed a fair few bets on things in the last couple of weeks and am about a tenner down, almost entirely because I bet the wrong way on the Champions League final, but I didn't mind losing that money to be honest!

I've been home this afternoon and decided to watch the tennis (urgh!) and have managed to accumulate a small amount of guaranteed cash on the Andy Murray match via betting at the right times during play.  I tend to bet only on things where I can bet in play, and only in sports which I know, with the exception of tennis.

Does anyone have any hints, tips, etc as to the way they bet?

Pylon Man, how are you getting on with this, just out of interest?

Lost a packet on the Nadal result and am currently chasing it with an outright bet on Gonzalez at 14-1(before the Murray match)

Been through the inplay thing and its just too risky, I pretty much only do outrights and accumulators now. Speaking of Gonzalez, he's the reason I no longer do inplay betting. I remember having accumulated around 2k in winnings on a brilliant hot streak of inplay tennis betting, and spunking about 800 quid of it on him in a match were he was the big favourite and should have won. He goes 1 set and a break down and I'm facing a big loss, so I use my remaining £1200 trying to hedge it on the other player to minimize the loss. To cut a long story short, Gonzales came back from the dead and I got very badly burnt.

I think the secret to making a decent return on betting is to find a little niche where the stats are in your favour.

As an example, the Premier league darts usually have the draw in the match at around 6-1/7-1, whilst statistically the chance of a draw is slightly less than that. Last season I bet on draws in every match in every round and made a profit in all but 1 round I think.

Wow, I don't bet anywhere near as much as that, usually it's 10 to 20 quid, or maybe 30.  The only reason why I bet in play is so that I can kind of hedge my bets too, I've not been burnt yet and with the amounts I bet if I do it won't be too bad.  If I'm watching an evenly matched rubgy league match you can (reasonably often) get a dutch book, I got one on the Huddersfield v Castleford match yesterday and I got one with the Murray match today, that's the main reason why I bet in play.

At the moment I'm trying to stick to what I know, which is basically both codes of rugby.  I can't really do tennis or darts at the moment, I don't know anywhere near enough about the sports and the odds frequently look uninviting, I don't like the idea of having to lump colossal sums on very short odds.  I prefer stuff where the odds are a bit more evenly matched.

With the Champions League loss, I bet there to "hedge" against the way I'd feel if Man Utd won, having to put up with gloating from a couple of friends, so I didn't mind losing the cash when they lost.  As you can probably tell, I don't really do it for the money (if I did I'd be fucked as I'm crap at gambling), just for the fun of it and to sometimes to make me feel less bad if sporting events don't go my way.

I pretend bet with horses. If I start picking the winners often enough then one of these days I'm going to bet for real.

Apart from that I only gamble with my life!

Betting against British teams/sportspeople is always fruitful because the bookies always price them up wrong, and if you lose you have a consolation.

My strategy for the coming season is to place several very long odds multiples, then bet small amounts on the opposite result at each stage. My multiple that I posted on the football thread a while back I ended up making a reasonable profit by doing that, even though I didn't really do it properly.

Don't you read the name of each horse out to your budgie and if it tweats you bet on it?

That's a pretty good system you've got there.

Simple observation:  If betting produced results, there wouldn't be a betting industry.

Conclusion:  Don't bet.

(Unless it's the stock market we're talking about, in which case betting is the backbone and lifeblood of democracy and the free world.)

Hehe, I know that, as I said up there I'm under no illusions about getting rich, I'm just doing it for a laugh!  As the saying goes, you never see a bookmaker on a bicycle.

I've never really understood the whole betting on your own country/person to win something if you really really want your country/person to win.  Taking a quick example, I want England to win the football world cup.  I wouldn't bet cash on England to win the thing as it wouldn't make England winning the world cup any more amazing, England winning the word cup would be amazing on its own (to me, I understand there may be some readers from other nations who may not share the same view).  I'd be tempted to lay on England and cash in when the inevitable penalty shootout defeat takes place, but I can't ever see me betting on them.
