I really do think that we've suffered from a surfeit of 'outrageous' obscenity over the last couple of years and it would be a little grim to say the least if "Box of Slice" was not able to find its way out of this yawning and yawn-inducing trap of predictability.

I do echo the second part of Neil's question, though - other than calling them incompetent twats when they can't even run a live broadcast as competently as their late 1970s counterparts did with steam-age equipment every week on "Noel Edmonds' Multicoloured Swap Shop" (or "Noel's House Party" only a couple of years ago, for that matter), why should any of the rest of us give a flying fuck about 'Hoxtonites' being satirised?

Oliver Padlock

I think the reason that said Hoxtonites are worthy of satirising is due to their ever-increasing presence and influence.  The classic Shoreditch grooming techniques and suit jacket/jean-wearing have permeated every cuntestant on Pop Idol to the majority of the Euro 2004 Spanish football squad.  This is pretty hateful given it's origins in soulless puddle-shallow 'artists' in North East London.  If you've ever happened upon a conversation in a bar or some such in this area about a new magazine  a group of these loathesome retards is about to launch, then surely you'll have come close to purchasing a firearm.  The fact that this category of loser has infiltrated and gained such recognition in the mass media, is surely worth pointing out in as vengeful manner as possible.  I mean, look at the a-hole who presents Top of the Pops these days, it used to be the likes of John Peel.

I hope you've misunderstood the show, otherwise it actually does sound rubbish.

Yeah, but what does it actually *mean* to the rest of us out there in rest-of-Britain-land? To us outsiders (and I think I'm speaking for most people on this board here), a hateful and untalented media figure is a hateful and untalented media figure, be they a Hoxtonite, Peter Bazalgette, Abi Titmuss, 'Bethan' and 'Huw' or that Jerry Foulkes bloke who used to present CITV in the 1980s. If it's satirising this scene, then it's satirising something that the majority of the audience have no knowledge of and just see as part of a wider malaise in the media (and no, that doesn't meant the spreading influence of the 'Hoxton set' - the rot's been going on far longer than that).

This is not saying that it will be rubbish or unfunny - in fact, I'm holding out hope that it will be a return to form - just that the point really does seem elusive.

Peel never presented TOTP that often, by the way. Neither did Kenny Everett or Adrian Juste. They seemed to try to keep the 'specialist' presenters away as much as possible in favour of the daytime mainstream types.

Ooh, hated, yes.  Untalented, no - have you seen her sex video?  She can show me her 'talents' anytime...

Shite, I have become a heathen.  I'm off.

Anyone know what Ch4rist Maurice is up to nowadays?

That's not going to help.

PS What's a 'Hoxton'?

TJ

Quote from: "Oliver Padlock"I can tell you that Chris Morris is Directing, which I presume you know.  It features a cast of unknown [to me] actors with the odd minor exception.  I refuse to divulge any more specifics as I will be shot in the legs for doing so.  But rest assured, it absolutely destroys the benders in Shoreditch with unerring accuracy, and maximum offence.  The Daily Mail will put a bounty on his head when this is broadcast.

"benders"?!?!??!?!?!??!

Quote from: "TJ""benders"?!?!??!?!?!??!

Yeah, y'know - Gays. Queers. Poofs. Spazzies. Mongs. Joeys. Etc.

Quote from: "Oliver Padlock"The Daily Mail will put a bounty on his head when this is broadcast.

Ooooh. Or maybe - just maybe - they'll do what they did with 'Jam' and make it their Show Of The Week.

Oliver Padlock

What it actually means to the rest you in Britain land is exactly what it means to those of us in London.  I hasten to add that I don't think it's cool to live in London.  It is Chris Morris making a comedy programme.  Hoxton is simply the epicentre of a nationwide scourge.  Even hamlets such as Manchester or Sheffield or Edinburgh or Brighton or blah blah conform to many of the cultural patterns of London.  I would be surprised if the people of the intelligence to use this [or any] website were unable to grasp the concept of this programme.  It's a point not worth labouring.  It is comedy, from what I've seen very funny and imaginative comedy.  That to me is the point.

Isn't that the sort of ego centric drivel it's supposed to be taking the piss out of?  I've only heard of Hoxton on TV-Go home, and certainly couldn't point out Shoreditch on a map.  But then maybe the programme isn't for us Yokels.

That isn't to say I don't hope it will be hilarious.  I quite like horribly rude, but I hope thats not all there is.

Peking O

I don't think it will matter too much if you're not familiar with Hoxton. The show seems to be about fashionista-types, and it has to be set somewhere. Hoxton's as good a place as any.

mikeyg27

Yeah, it's blatantly more about shitty fashion followers, of which there happen to be plenty in Hoxton. I live 15 minutes away from the place, and see a fair few of these types. However, what people don't seem to notice is that the rest of Hoxton and Shoreditch is inhabited by money grabbing city-types, who work down the road.

Jet Set Willy

I go out drinking or to clubs in hoxton quite often and I think it's just become a lazy stereotype to talk about 'hoxtonites' as being trustafarians and people with 'chernobyl-haircuts' and so on. There are wankers there, but I don't give a shit because there are lots of creative people with good music taste and a fun atmosphere. The worst people for being clueless fashion-following cunts are the people who view the fads of the vain and petty (who I agree are found in much higher proportions in communities such as Hoxton) from a distance and try to emulate them.

I'm pretty sure that making such a fuss out of such a scene is actually more wankerish than experiencing it and making an effort to enjoy yourself.

There are plenty of wankers in the world and plenty of cunts.

I still think this show could be good though, as I am praying that the people making reports on it being about such specific things are ignorant twats, and I have enjoyed much Brooker and especially Morris work.

I ewally really really really wish he would do some more acting though.

Guest

How about having the Poll choices a bit wider so that there's less editorial bias?

TJ

There is no editorial bias - all of the options are exaggerated pisstakes of typical viewpoints.

Neil

And if there was bias....so what, Guest?  Does it matter?  It's the design of the site that mainly defines how the options are given, we can't have options that are too long as they would stretch away down every page of the main site.

On the off-chance that you reigstered the name "Guest" to screw up anonymous posting, well, it didn't work.

Neil

QuoteThe Daily Mail The Daily Mail

"But what about the hooomeless?"

Why would someone come here just to let us know they know stuff about a show, and then refuse to dilvulge any information, even though they are posting anonymously and can't be traced?  And why would they then mention having a mate involved in the making of the show when that doesn't really make any difference?  What's all silly secrecy about?

Oliver Padlock

I came across this site when looking for Nathan Barley on Google out of boredom at work.  I couldn't help but notice the amount of scepticism regarding this 'project'.  Therefore, having seen a day's shooting which caused me to laugh an awful lot, I thought I would attempt to allay some of your fears by informing you it should be hilarious.  Of course, it might turn out to be rubbish [which I doubt], but that would involve all of the post-production etc being done by the team at Emmerdale.  It is obviously being kept secret for some reason, I know little of the overall picture, and anything which I attempt to relay will only be infinately less good than from the horse's mouth.  I am simply trying to bring optimism to you people.

Where's the scepticism, though? As far as I'm aware, most people have been saying something along the lines of "I wasn't keen on the last couple of Morris shows, but I'm still hopeful that this one will be good".

I take what people actually post to the forums as a more reliable indication than the polls, to be honest...
