Author Topic: Wally Fawkes (Trog of "Flook" fame) is still alive!!!!!!!!!!  (Read 9080 times)

..part of a series where I alert folks to the continued existence of a deeply underappreciated UK cartooning talent. In this case Wally Fawkes (penname of Trog) Daily Mail cartoonist from 1949-2005, whose creation Flook (which ran 1949-1984) is right up there with Peanuts you name it, as more people would know were it ever collected and UK culture had as much respect as the US for their own cartooning talent. Anyone else a fan?

So was the Mail ever respectable? You hear of its 60s liberalism, and Humphrey Lyttelton drawing cartoons for it, but then you're reminded of the Daily Beast and 'Hurrah for the Blackshirts'. Perhaps it's more to do with the changing relationship between newspaper readership and opinion-formers

What? That's correct! Aaaanyway...

Didn't Fawkes pitch in with the tributes when Humph died last year? He always looked about 20 years younger than HL in all the documentaries... Thanks for the scans!

no problem, took little effort on my part as they were taken from google image searches. Though I will add scans from my onw meagre Flook collection if there's anymore interest.
Am kind of regretting not trying to visit the White Hart pub the last time I was in London to see if Fawkes still does his Tuesday night residency. Gotta catch em while you can..

Damn right there's interest in Flook. One of the great unsung British newspaper strips - as some have said, altogether too decent and left-wing for the Mail. I remember it with great fondness, ajsmith - so thanks for these and please let's see any more that you may have...

I was just looking through some Flook strips last night after rewatching 'George Melly's Last Stand' on iPlayer. Yay for Fawkes still being about, and for the quality of the strips themselves.

(I've nowt more to add, other than I hadn't seen the above strip set before, thanks ajsmith!)

Another fan here. I used to look forward to the Observer purely for his stuff. I find that I ever looked forward to the Observer as astonishing as the suggestion that the Mail was ever worth reading.

Trog's great - I especially adore Flook though. I've got one of the old collections from my dad and I'm surprised there there haven't been more collected works. Found this blog which has some scans - http://comicbooksareinteresting.blogspot.com/2008/06/rufus-and-flook-versus-moses-maggot.html

Here's 3 strips from the 2007 collection (a very slim fan-made booklet)  "The Pataphysical Flook"

Is the above an Enoch Powell spoof?

Absolutely. The mail has changed tone a bit since then.
I discovered Flook when I was about 11 and used to go to the school library every lunchtime to read that day's strip. If only I'd cut them out and kept them... I would probably have got a detention.

The only other strip in the Mail of the time that I remember was Fred Bassett, which even then I could see was shit.

Never heard of him or the character!

Although whoever he is clearly knows it's "another THINK coming" (see second strip).

Glad to see that Trog is still with us.

"Flook" moved to the Daily Mirror roundabout 1984. From what I remember of it, it was a toothless, not entirely amusing shadow of its former self by that point, all satirical bite gone. Ah, well.
