I installed the expansion disks but they don't seem to be working. I installed the latest patch first and the files have all been written to the correct place, but when I switch on the game, nothing happens. No new radio signals or anything. The instructions say
QuoteRun the launcher for Fallout 3 by selecting Fallout 3 from your Start Menu or shortcut from your desktop. Select Data Files. Make sure the boxes next to Anchorage.esm and ThePitt.esm are both checked
But I don't have a clue what they're on about. I can't see Data Files on the main menu, and if it means for me to look in the actual installation folder, I don't know where any boxes would be.

Does anyone have any advice, or am I just being dense?

Desi Rascal

Data files is an option that comes up when you insert the disk or boot up from the short-cut, its usually in the little launch game box before the main game loads and the credits come up, try reinserting the disk.

Once you find Data files scan down the list and chek the files you want to include

That's sorted it, thankyou. I played through Operation Anchorage last night, which seemed cheap and cheerful (or possibly a bit half-arsed, depending on your point of view). There's probably more benefit to playing it if you've got a lower level character, but I liked the fact that it introduced some different looking environments. Other than that, the nicest thing so far is simply the fact that the game carries on after the original end instead of ending on a crappy anticlimax.
Spoiler alert
The decision of whether to infect the water actually feels like it carries some moral weight now, instead of adding a rudimentary illusion of freedom.

Of course, once I've finished with the new missions, I may be back making the same complaints as before. For now though, the game seems revitalised.

graaasp!

According to Fallout Wiki the first glimpse of New Vegas will be made available to the public next month. They've really dragged it out.

I must recommend the first two Fallout games. Being a big fan of the third one I thought I'd check them out, for me they're far better.

I really wish they'd port one/both to the iPhone, it would be the perfect way to get through commutes.

Lt Plonker

Nice idea, but it'd be incredibly fiddly wouldn't it?

Zero Gravitas

Yes very much so, Fallout 2 was 640x480 while the iPhone is only 480x320.

For comparison playing Monkey Island 2 (320×200) under ScummVM at 320x240 on a HTC was infuriating but still within the lower end of 'playable'.

The Nokia internet tablets (770, N800, N810, N900) are great for ScummVM as they have a resisitive screen and a stylus. The 770 wont run later games like Full Throttle at a decent speed, though.

Sure you've all seen this by now, the trailer for New Vegas:

I've started playing F3 again partly inspired by this thread - having much more luck this time.  I think not being a big RPG player I made the rookie mistake of spreading the XP too thinly and not concentrating on particular skills.  I'm L12 at the moment, tooled up and just about to put the processor in the RoboTec factory - having been there before I know what that unleashes but I'm ready for em this time!

I hadn't no!

Thanks for that.

I'm back playing through F3 after picking up the Game of the Year edition with all the download content for dirt cheap on Amazon.

I've just played through the alien level. Amazing. It's the game that keeps on giving. I'm up to 150+ hours now and still not near completing it totally.

Further details about New Vegas:
QuoteWhat's new?

    * It shows the command wheel for followers, with 8 commands: toggle melee/ranged, open inventory, toggle stay close/keep distance, back up, toggle aggressive/passive AI, use stimpack, toggle wait here/follow me, return to normal dialogue.
    * Scripting is wittier, characters more distinct. Example from vigour test word association: mother-human shield.
    * Opening inventory consists of a kit from the doc, adapted to your starting stats (like Fallout 1).
    * The Nevada area is less affected by the nuclear war, so it has plant life, relatively unspoiled houses, and in visual presentation has saturated colours and a bright sky.
    * There's a tutorial (led by a character named Sunny who looks a lot like Moira Brown), but unlike Fallout 3, it's optional, so you can hit the open game in 5 minutes from starting.
    * NCR and Caesar's Legion are the confirmed faction, article assumes Brotherhood of Steel will be in but they weren't not mentioned in the presentation.
    * "In New Vegas it's all about the player examining the ideologies of the various groups that are controlling the area and supporting one over the others," explains Sawyer. "Each of the ideologies will have something good that you can relate to, but will also have massive flaws."
    * When asked about PS3's Fallout 3 being inferior to the others and if New Vegas will do better, Obsidian devs make no promises but indicate it was a learning process and they're working with all 3 platforms and all have problems.
    * The New Vegas strip is still in construction but will have gambling, variety shows and concerts.
    * Electrical power is key in the faction struggle.
    * Radiation is still a problem, there's a nuclear test site to explore north of New Vegas.
    * The soundtrack will blend "Rat Pack style tunes with more Western numbers"
    * New Vegas doesn't tell a single-player story, but weaves decision into the gameworld and gives you greater power to influence things than Fallout 3 did.
    * On top of adding back in geckos, New Vegas has a whole new type of animal: mutated mountain rams called Big Horners.
The emboldened bits are exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for, which is nice.

Might as well post the magazine scans from that site too.

Edit: Bah, they don't seem to be working here. Check them out on the site. There are lots of interesting details contained therein.

HappyTree

Continuing with this game, but it's pretty boring at the moment. I can't do anything. I have to go to another place to find the radio station and I got killed by 3 random people shooting at me. I guess I should persevere, but I keep running into the same people in Megaton and they're not saying anything new.

It was also a little annoying when I bumped into that old woman asking me to tell her husband to see her. So I went off to find her husband, spoke to him and no dialogue option was there to tell him to go and see his wife. He then proceeded to walk right past her with her still saying "Where is my husband?"

He's bloody right there!

Also I got confused with Fable 2 and thought there's be an eye symbol if anyone could see me steal things. The doctor was asleep! Yet still he saw me steal medical supplies. He started to attack me so I killed him. Great. The doctor is dead :-D

I'm thinking just to say fuck it and blow up the nuke for the sake of it. At least it's something to do!

JPA

I would strongly suggest that you don't detonate the bomb in Megaton.

How have the rest of the inhabitants reacted to you killing the doctor? Have you spoken to Moira in Craterside Supply yet?

I know what you mean about that bit of dialogue from the mother, it's just a throwaway bit of conversation.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Save the game! It's at least worth doing just to see the fucker go up- that's one of the best set pieces in the history of gaming.

Sorry you find it boring. You just need to get a bit involved- the more you scavenge, the more you kill, it makes it more fun later.

Surviving by the skin of your torso fending off mutants, raiders, centaurs and various grislies in one horrible firefight is a really big rush. One of the best bits of the game is you really are constantly fighting for your survival wheras with so many war FPS's it feels like 'oh if i die ill start again'. With an RPG even though technically you can start from your last save you feel much more connected. I do, anyway.

HappyTree

Yeah, I realise I'm only at the beginning and once I build up a bit things will improve. I hadn't thought of saving and then blowing up the bomb. I'll do that to see what it's like. But no, I don't really want to do it.

I just need to put a little bit of effort into fighting off people I meet along the way. But I do find it hard to get money. I stole a whole load of stuff, sold it to the guy in the café, stole some more, went back and he had no money to buy anything. Yes it's more realistic, but I need money! I'd be perfectly happy with a slightly unbrealistic seller who is always able to buy from me.

I can't find the Craterside Supply at all. Where is it? I looked all around the crater specifically for this place and all I could find was the café. The armoury is always locked too. How do I find Moira? Hopefully that will open things up a bit.

HappyTree

Oh and no, nobody has reacted to the doctor being dead. No-one saw me do it. The sheriff is dead too, killed by the guy who asked me to blow up the bomb. I also shot the woman from the café a couple of times by accident. She had forgotten all about it the next day, lol. Forgiving bunch.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

My brother has a very 'lol can I shoot him' approach to Fallout which makes me a bit sick (he is 29). There are no games without some sort of consequence to shooting innocent people randomly. I assumed GTA had got that out of everyone's system.

I've been playing this all day... haven't spent so long in front of a game since the early Champ Managers.

HappyTree: to find the Crater Supply go up any ramp look up until you see the Saloon sign and head in that direction.

Honestly, one of the few disappointing aspects to Fallout 3 is that you can't kill children (I only want Harden Simms to be with his daddy in heaven).

As you enter Megaton, go immediately right instead of down the slope, you'll pass the water processing plant (oh, and pop in there too and speak to Walter), and then there's a downhill ramp, at the bottom of which is Craterside supply. It's only open during daylight hours though I think.

In Megaton you can buy and sell from Moira, Jenny Stahl, the ghoul in the bar who's name escapes me and the doctor (though obviously that option is out). Travelling traders also appear outside Megaton every now and then.

HappyTree

Ok cheers, I'll see if I can do any better tomorrow. I think I'll just go back to the saved game I began with and forget today ever happened! I didn't realise that I could just run away if I didn't want to kill someone who was attacking me, that's why I killed the doc.

JPA

Oh, if you are going to go around stealing - doing it while crouching always helps because then you get a status on your screen that says if people can see you or not, think it's [HIDDEN]/[DETECTED] with friends and [CAUTION]/[DANGER] with enemies.

Yeah, but it costs you money to get accepted, and your karma slips on each successful capture. I did do "Strictly Business" (I think that was what it was called) whilst remaining pure though.

I had the same issues as you the first time I played the game.  What I did to get some supplies (and have some fun!) is go to Moira in Craterside Supply and agree to do the research for her book.  There are a number of things to do, one of the early ones is to go and check out the old Super-Duper-Mart.  There's plenty of supplies and things to sell in there, plus a good few Raiders to deal with.  It's not overly hard, but does get the adrenalin going the first time.  You can get guns and armour off the Raider and either repair or sell that.  Another good place for killing Raiders is the School just North of Megaton, not far from the Vault 101.  Raiders are good for practice as they tend only to be in 2s or 3s, and usually have melee weapons so a decent gun and VATS will usually see them off, and you get a lot of kit that way.

It's a great game, just stick with it and try to get into the spirit - I now try not to fast-travel anywhere unless I absolutely have to (like when I got lost in all the rubble in the middle of the city this week).

HappyTree

I don't believe it! I began today with the clear mission "Fine Craterside Supplies". It so happened that this was the building directly in front of me as soon as the saved game loaded. Last time I played I must have found it and saved the game pointing me at the next thing I had to do. All I had to do to go in was walk forward! WTH was I doing all day yesterday? lol Well I guess I learned what not to do.

Mustow Green

If you want a good scrap with Raiders, find the Overlook drive-in movie.  Take some grenades.

More info on New Vegas from USAToday:

http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/life/20100216/fallout16_st.art.htm

QuoteAt the outset of the game, your character is shot and left in a shallow grave in the desert, lifted of the package you were entrusted with delivering. A robot digs you out and takes you to a local caregiver, Doc Mitchell, who nurses you back to health.

"Unlike the previous Fallouts, where you start in a vault and you are a vault dweller, this one starts with a curveball," says Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks.

QuoteThe move to Las Vegas provides "a brand new, fresh experience that has a familiar feel of Fallout, but otherwise it's an entirely new game and a new look, with Joshua trees and tumbleweeds and blue skies," Hines says. "Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip. It will have a very different feel from that standpoint."

Events in the game happen a few years after Fallout 3. No characters from that game appear, Hines says, "but you will eventually hear a little bit about the events" of that game. New Vegas is "a self-contained story. You don't have to have played the previous games to have any clue what's going on here."

Bring it on.

Anyway, HappyTree, are you having fun yet?

Marvin

Damn. I share an xbox with my housemate and a few weeks back it died so we got a cheap deal on an arcade and switched the hard drive over. However I've just discovered that because the Fallout 3 DLC was bought on my housemate's live account, I can no longer use it on my saved game (currently on 84 hours) making it all screwed up and worthless unless I buy all the DLC again.
