Awful movie titles

A thread prompted by this upcoming feature:

I mean really ......

I can't think of any other recent ones apart from Quantum of Solace (which was a pretty good film regardless).

The Hurt Locker. It sounds a bit... wussy. Not that they should have given it a generic name like 'Rotation', just something good.

the midnight watch baboon

In The Loop. sounds obsequeously wanky, what're they gonna call the sequel... Honey Nut Loops? Grrr?

Avatar: The Last Airbender's been around for years, though – this is just the movie adaptation. The blame for the main heading being wiped from the poster lies with James Cameron and a load of blue twats. Plus obviously 'bender' only has certain connotations in the UK, or they'd definitely have gone with something else for the Futurama character.

Not a film, but the worst videogame title I've ever heard is the futuristic racer, Fatal Inertia.

Ah yeah, all those interchangable adjective-noun titles

boxofslice

I find most rom-coms have awful titles.

I saw an advert on TV about an hour ago for a film called "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief"

mycroft

That kids' film that was out a few years back, 'The Last Mimzy'. Although at least it did make me giggle. Every single time I saw the advert.

But it's still terrible without the whole "bender means gay" issue. Compare it to "Last of the Mohicans", which has a certain resonance as people know what a Mohican is. "The Last Airbender" is meaningless. This is like calling a film "The Last Turnip-spinner". When the Avatar part of the name had to go they should have scrapped the leftover bit and called it something less silly. Like Octopussy.

I also want to nominate Fast and Furious, which is a very confusing thing to call The Fast and the Furious 4.

Was anyone else annoyed when what should have been Rocky VI was instead named Rocky Balboa?

gmoney

Similarly, Rambo IV is just Rambo. People (I have been guilty) forget that the first one is actually just called First Blood. Sly Stallone must have a giggle doing this kind of thing.

Simultaneously awful and awesome.

Now I like the old Star Wars films as much as the average person. Probably a bit less than the average nerd. I saw The Phantom Menace in the cinema twice and I remember thinking it was pretty good. But I lost interest in the whole thing the moment I found out that Episode II was going to be called Attack of the Clones. I still haven't seen it to this day. Episode III looks alright though, can I just skip to that one?

Quite clearly it should have been called 'The Flick of It.'

Special prize for the most imaginative title goes to:

The photoshop thread in the general forum made me aware of these two:

Spinning into Butter

Everybody's Fine

Who, in their right mind, would voluntarily go and see either of these films? Old people? Do they go anywhere voluntarily?

The 'two people standing back to back holding guns vertically' poster pose seems to have fallen out of fashion in recent years. This was everywhere in the early 90s. I'm sure there was one when one had a gun and another had a hairdryer, although I'm fucked if I remember what that was.

It's presumably been overtaken by colour-theory using cunts:

During the time that the film was out, I was in Wh Smiths and spotted a knitting magazine which featured some knitted duck characters dressed as stormtroopers, luke skywalker etc on the cover.

The headline was: A Quack of the Clones which had me laughing all day.

Ee, we had to make our own fun back then.

Another thing that strikes me about those posters, other than the colour scheme, is the angle of the writing in many of them. Does anyone know the origin of/reason for posters where the text - and often the image - is slanted a little bit, usually lower at the left, higher at the right?

These were all simply taken from the google image results for "film poster", but there's hundreds more:

What's up with that?

The "Schindler's Fist" tag makes me wonder. Those pun porn titles: awful or great? I'm going with great. My favourite has to be Glad-he-ate-her. No idea if it's a real title, though.

I it gives the impression of speed and action as they are apparently desirable qualities, well..in all but 'pathology', but I think the focus there is on a clever alignment with the surroundings.

An tSaoi

Looks shit of you ask me. It'd put me off going to see those films.

Baxter

Anne...did you resize all of those portrait style posters to 350px wide?

An tSaoi

Yes. It looks nicer for people scrolling down when they're all the same width.
