Need a platform game to play

Ok here's the sitch yall.  I love 2D platform games, or "platformers".  Best genre ever.  However, I've basically played all of them.

Suggest ones I might not have played - I can run any of the systems that are emulated to a degree (GBA, SMS, MD, NES, SNES, WS, other acronyms), as well as older PC stuff.

Shoot.  If you manage to find a good one I'm not familiar with, I'll... I don't know, give you a cuddle. :3

Good choice.

Another decent freeware platformer worth checking out is Within a Deep Forest. You play as a bouncy ball, and you can morph into different balls, each with their own pros and cons.

and VVVVVV is a great indie platformer released recently, you have to pay for this one though. It's based around a central gimmick of flipping gravity, and not being able to jump. There are some great ideas in there, and the graphical style evokes games like Jet Set Willy. The retro sounding music is also ace. It's a short single player mode, but if you go in for things like time trials, mini-games, and other extras then it'll have you addicted.

Demo's here: http://thelettervsixtim.es/

Nik Drou said most of 'em

Quackshot
Legend Of The Mystical Ninja and Japanese-only sequels, Goemon 2 and 3 - they're half RPG-like, half platformer, sequels have great 3D bits when you control mechs too
Sparkster (same character as Rocket Knight adventures, different game)
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose (SNES)
Ren and Stimpy: Veediots (SNES)
Ren and Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention (MD)
any of the PC Kid/BC Kid/Bonk games
Rocko's Modern Life
The Blues Brothers

What are you talking about?  It's a very nice game, full of bright colours and cutesy creations.  I especially loved how the game would always display encouraging messages to you when you died.  It's not at all fucked up.

Superfrog
Treasure Island Dizzy
Jurassic Park (Megadrive)
Cool Spot
The Humans*
Soccer Kid
That Amiga game where you play a baby bunspitting elephant. One of the levels is at Cape Canaveral. Little help?
Chuck Rock

Wasn't there a Codemasters game with an elephant as the main character? His name was CJ or PJ or something like that.

Oh, another one for the list - Magic Pockets. And Rodland.

Big post.

Cave Story

More or less required gaming, this.  Recently beat the

level, after about two years.

Kid Chameleon

Never actually did beat this one without using the warp - maybe I will give it a go.

Chuck Rock 1 & 2

Just recently beat Chuck 1, and I simply don't understand Chuck 2.  I'm sure there's a technique I'm missing - there are items high up I just can't fathom how to get.

Decap Attack
James Pond 2 & 3

Beat these to death.  Isn't James Pond 3 incredible?

Asterix (MS)

Good call - never did clock this one.

Vectorman 1 & 2

Don't like these games.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World/Enchanted Castle
Megaman 1 to fucking 10.

Beat these.  Miracle World's a cunt, but it's a good cunt.

Prince of Persia 1 & 2

More or less impossible.

Flashback

Never could get into this, I'll give it another go.

Duck Tales

Great game.  The music on the Moon level. :)

Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse

Beat all three of these - they're wonderful.

The Lost Vikings

I recently got hold of the sequel to this, on PSone.  Might plug through that one.

Tiny Toon Adventures (MD)

So good I wrote a walkthrough D:

Zool 1 & 2

Sorry, these are crap.

Aladdin

Burnt out on this one - haven't beaten the Master System one yet.

The Lion King

Sucks.

Little Nemo

Been playing this (NES) on my DS.  It's hard!

Yoshi's Island
Addams Family (SNES)

Pair of fabulous games.

Super Star Wars/Empire/Jedi

Don't care for these.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus

Amazingly atmospheric games, which I urge everyone to play.

Super Metroid

Beat it once, amazing ending, never want to play again. :(

Rocket Knight Adventures 1 & 2
Ristar

BTDT

Global Gladiators

Haven't beaten this one.  It's got ridiculous music.  I might give it a go.

Cool Spot
Dyamite Heddy
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 & 64
Kirby 1,2, 3 and 64

Made all these my bitch, I'm afraid.  Headdy is fantastic.

Bionic Commando

Good choice.  I never really had a proper go of this.

Jumping Flash 1 & 2
Crash Bandicoot 1, 2 & 3
Pandemonium 1 & 2

I only have Pandemonium 1 for PC and it runs too fast to be playable.  Can't DOSbox it either :(

Already beat the Crash games, but they're not 2D anyway :p

Drill Dozer

100%d :(

Spelunky

I'm absolutely dying for a go of this, but it doesn't work on my shitfarm PC.

Eversion

Still need to get all the gems.

Fury of the Furries

Don't think I've played this much.  Weird bouncy physics?

Within a Deep Forest

Good call, I'll go back to this.

VVVVVV

Costs money.

Quackshot
Legend Of The Mystical Ninja
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose (SNES)
Ren and Stimpy: Veediots (SNES)
Ren and Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention (MD)
PC Kid/BC Kid/Bonk games
Rocko's Modern Life
The Blues Brothers

Beat all of these except Rocko, which I disliked, and the Bonk games, which I really ought to get onto.  Isn't the SNES Blues Brothers game AMAZING?

Superfrog

Might use me WinUAE to fnally beat this.

Treasure Island Dizzy

Too hard for me :3

Jurassic Park (Megadrive)

Didn't like this.

Soccer Kid

Really fiddly.

That Amiga game where you play a baby bunspitting elephant. One of the levels is at Cape Canaveral. Little help?

CJ's Elephant Antics?

Toejam & Earl 2

Awesome co-op.

Magic Pockets

This an Amiga title?  I'll look into it.

Rodland

Which version do you recommend?

Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure

This is just Decap Attack again!

biggytitbo

On an Amiga note, Gods was bloody fantastic. I seem to remember this was quite good too:

And Rainbow Islands of course.

Also 'Gods' (Biggy!) was the Bitmap Brothers' follow up to 'Magic Pockets'. I never liked either of them personally but they were very well recieved at the time.

You say you couldn't get into Flashback but I assume you played Another World? Very similar gameplay.

Midnight Resistance on the Amiga was the first game I ever finished but it was probably crap.

What about Shadow Dancer? New Zealand Story? What about Psycho Fox, Kid Chameleon and Castle Of Illusion? Mario? Sonic? Manic Miner?

Jemble Fred

It's odd, but I just presume that anybody with a passion for platformers has already completed every Dizzy game.

Nik Drou

Also, if you fancy a challenge, there's a huge amount of Mario World hacks available online.  Some of these are the most stupidly difficult levels around.

Not a chance.  Those games aren't really about the challenge of traversing platforms as much as memorising where you've left stuff.  In my experience the platform stuff is just there to cost you lives and artificially increase the game's length.  This isn't the case for all the Dizzy's, mind you.  And I certainly do enjoy them.

Did you ever try the two GBA Metroids, Fusion and Zero Mission? Might be worth a look if not.

madhair60

Yeah.  I enjoy them quite a bit more than the SNES one.  Simplified controls and a lot less meandering about, dropping bombs on every surface.

biggytitbo

The Dizzy games were ok but they were a patch on the brilliant Magic Knight games http://www.mevagissey.net/magic/index.htm

They start off as platformers but almost become proto adventure games by the last one.

Eight Taiwanese Teenagers

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

Sounds like some bestiality fetish vid with that twat from Eggheads.

You should certainly give Flashback another try. The controls take a little time to get used to, but it's a lot of fun once you do. It's still one of my favourite games all these years later.

SavageHedgehog

I'm sure you've played it but I was always a big fan of Bubsy. Sadly when I finally played them the sequel was a let down, and the 3D one lived down to its reputation. Cool Spot Goes To Hollywood was also disappointing, though nowhere near as bad.

Also:
Mickey Mania
Dick Tracy (Mega Drive)
Robocop 3 (SNES)
Not 2-D but I thought Shellshocker starring the yellow and red M&Ms was a lot of old fashioned fun.

And Buster Busts Loose wasn't quite as fantastic as Buster's Hidden Treasure

Nik Drou

There were quite a few terrible 3D sequels, weren't there?  Bubsy 3D, Earthworm Jim 3D, TJ & Earl 3D, any more?

Any that were good?

Jemble Fred

Rum ti toodle, pina colada, half a pound of muesli, what do you think of Shirley Williams? I want to go to the toilet...
