Portal 2 [split topic]

Valve have patched some cryptic messages into PC Portal.  Internet's going mental decoding it all.

All the messages are cryptic for me in Portal, I have some strange bug where multiple lines of the robot woman's dialogue all mixed one on top of t'other so I could never make head nor tale of what she was saying.... It wasn't until I watched a walkthrough on Youtube that I realised it wasn't meant to sound like that.

The weird thing is that all the dialogue on Half Life 2 + Ep.1 & 2 is fine ?!

Tangent: I bought the Orange Box off Steam out of guilt/respect and for HL2:Ep2, for which I couldn't find a working pirate. Every single game works much worse than the pirate copies I already had.

When will I learn that crime pays?

Speaking of The Orange Box, have they released an update to fix all of the problems with the PS3 version?

Matter of fact, as I'm here, Sainsbury's are selling a 360Elite for 160quid.  Is this a good deal and is the console worth getting if you already own a PS3?

I got The Orange Box recently for my PS3, and everything seems to work just fine. And also it was all just fantastic.

There's really aren't any major problems, it's just prone to a bit of slowdown and framerate problems now and then, but it didn't really bother me that much, in fact sometimes I was greatful for the tactical advantage it gave me. and it's only ever crashed completley once for me.

I tend to agree, however I'm curious as to how they're working worse, exactly?  Is it Steam?  I know it can be a bit of a bastard for me (especially if there are connection troubles -- the "Play offline" feature is absolute bullshit, I've had it work approximately once since the launch of Steam)

It's quite weird. Steam keeps supposedly updating Portal, the last two updates had on their list of fixes "Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations" and "Added valuable asset retrieval" whatever the fuck that all means. I'm hoping it's all to build anticipation for possible upcoming DLC or maybe even a sequel?

The first update refers to the fact that each level now has a radio which will play a message when carried to a particular point. The second update appears to refer to the fact that the game's ending has now been changed slightly:
Spoiler alert
you awake on the ground, hear a robot voice thanking you for assuming the "party escort submission position" and are dragged backwards -- the "valuable asset" being recovered apparently being you.
[close]

The encoded messages hidden in the first update are neatly summarised at http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=13767776&postcount=2291 and the altered ending can be seen at http://www.xfire.com/video/2393cf/

Still Not George

I do love me some Valve ARG. Bestest virals in the world.

Haha that's brilliant. Gotta be some new content coming soon.

Looks like those bell-ends at Valve aren't releasing the excellent looking Portal 2 on the PS3. Twats! Surely there's no excuse after the PS3 been out for over 3 years not to develop for it?

Gabe Newell seems to have a pathological hatred of the PS3. However, the Orange Box was eventually ported to PS3 by EA UK, so I'd imagine the same thing will happen with Portal 2 (hopefully without the frame rate issues that plagued that conversion).

The problems are exaggerated. Portal, HL2 and HL2 Ep 1 are stutter free, there's some slowdown here and there in episode 2 but nothing that affects the gameplay. You can get it for a tenner which is still one of the bet bargains you'll ever find.

Portal 2 is all well and good, but I'd rather they get around to finally releasing Episode 3 at some point.

Yeah not on PS3 though the useless cunts.

DuncanC

I loved the first game but I really, really hope they avoid cramming tedious fan-service cake jokes into the sequel.

I don't understand why episode 3 is taking so long, we'll be lucky if they release it on any format this christmas, and even if they do it'll have taken 3 years. So it's going to take them 3 years (probably more) to make a third of a game, the basic mechanics and engine of which is already in place. Ubisoft managed to turn Assassin's Creed 2 around in 2 years for fuck's sake.

Presumably its taking so long because they're not just churning out more of the same...I hope anyway, Episode 2 started to get a bit repetitive for me.

I think the issue is that they cannot release another game based on the same, aging engine and look competitive. The plan for three expansions depended on getting them out fairly briskly. I expect that the material for Episode 3 will be rolled into Half Life 3 now.

easytarget

Stephen Merchant will be that voicing one of the characters : http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/08/portal-2-stephen-merchant/

That's a shame, I was expecting to enjoy this game.

Little Hoover

I thought the guy they had doing the voice in the temp track was fine, not sure Merchant will be right for it. Don't think this is necessarily bad news though, Valve seem to know what their doing when it comes to voice acting.

chocky909

I just watched the bit with the temp guy and I think Merchant will be a big improvement. I'd rather a decent unknown though. I suppose most people (Americans) who play the game won't know who it is anyway.

biggytitbo

This is out next week! And apperently if you buy the PS3 version you get a code that allows you to download the PC/Mac version for free, which is nice.

uglybob1986

Mmm, I'm going to get some cake to celebrate

The Masked Unit

Although I wasn't intending to buy it on release, I decided that I would have to because I wouldn't be able to help myself reading spoilers, and I've a feeling this is one game I really want to go in completely fresh on, given the surprise twist in the first one (it was surprise to me at least - I went into it thinking it was a storyless puzzler). I really can't wait to see what they come up with in this one.

Do you reckon that if I can run Portal 1 I can run Portal 2 ? Has any system requirements been posted anywhere ?
