Video nasties

This may have all been done before, but what a fascinating period of British culture this was!

A bunch of exploitation films, mostly from the seventies, are considered a huge threat to the British way of life and hastily banned with a rushed-through act of parliament and an entire nascent industry is legislated and watchdogged to buggery almost overnight. And the supposed 'banning' of the films didn't do a fart of good, because in my experience you could still get them anywhere, if you were prepared to look.

Now, of course, the internet has made it all obsolete. If a film's banned or cut here, you can order it from a more enlightened foreign clime. If you can't go another day without wondering what all the fuss was about with the Burning, YouTube has the notorious 'raft of death' scene for your enlightenment. And, of course, most of the films are available on shiny DVD from high street stores everywhere...I remember thinking "Wow, WH Smith's is fucking hardcore these days" when I spotted Last House on the Left on their racks. Which really does give my age away.

So...memories, favourites, huge disappointments, stories about bunking off school to watch the Evil Dead on Betamax at a mate's house, thinking the 'dopplegangers' edition of Hammer House of Horror was scarier by far, laughing at the shit special effects / ropey acting / blank stares / spurts of tomato ketchup and sighing "Wes Craven really was a subversive film-maker back in the day" whilst puffing on an imaginary cigar and drinking a figurative glass of Chateau de Chasselais...this is your thread. Knock yourselves out!

Well besides the usual Palace Horror list (EDII, The Hills Have Eyes, Basket Case, Brain Damage, etc.) I think my favourite is The Rise And Fall Of Idi Amin, a British exploitation film about the former Ugandan leader, which features delightful scenes such as this:

Or if you've got time, (most of) the whole film:

The Last King Of Scotland it ain't. But as pieces of trash go, it's pretty fun. And the fact it's shot on location (albeit in Kenya) gives it a bit of a higher-end feel than your average Britsploitation flick.

EDIT: Of course it's not just confined to the 70s and 80s. I understand some DVDs of the oft-mentioned August Underground series have been impounded at UK customs, who mistake it for genuine snuff. To be fair, the only thing about it that makes you realise it's fake is the fact that if it were real, getting a copy would be a lot more difficult.

That and the credits I suppose.

Why I Hate Tables

Street Trash is pretty good in an awful way, there's a great scene where a man's cock is ripped off and a large group of people proceed to play catch with it.

Dick Toss !!

Any lingering "Ouch" is gone by the time the jaunty barrelhouse piano kicks in and he's running around screaming "Get the fuckin' thing on ice". Almost.

A comedy classic. I mean, it's laugh-out-loud ridiculous.

Have you heard about 'A Serbian Film'? That sounds pretty nasty, can't see that ever getting an uncut release given some of the content in it.

VegaLA

Talking of dick rippings I remember 'Night of the Demon' (not to be confused with Night of the Demons starring Linea Quigley) was mentioned here a year or so ago and that it was available on the 'usual' sites but i've never had any luck tracking it down.
Worth finding just for the scene where the Bigfoot with the bad temper pulls out some happless guys intestines and swings them around as a weapon!

Happy times for all.

I've just watched that 'raft of death' scene and it's reminded me why I detest 'slasher' movies or gore of any kind really. I'm not saying it can't form part of a great movie, but I'd rather be a bit more protective about what goes into my head.

Cannibal Holocaust deserves way better than the "video nasty" tag it's been stuck with since the VRA furore.  Watched it again relatively recently (last few years, uncut [nb]except the Last Road to Hell sequence, which is included on the disc as an extra[/nb] Aussie edition) with friends, joking our way through it and taking the piss.  Couldn't keep it up - the film gets so fucking grim it totally froze our ability to mock it.  Still shocking after all these years.

El Unicornio, mang

Does anyone know a film that features a scene where a girl emerges from some bushes (after running through woods, I think) and a knight is standing over her and hacks her to bits? They showed it on the news back when the video nasty thing was going on but I never found out which film it was.

Re: video nasties, the only ones I've seen which come close to the shock factor of those old ones are French horror films, in particular the last half hour of Martyrs.

Sounds like one of The Blind Dead films.

An old horror-enthusiast friend of mine introduced me to some pretty horrendous guff, there are two highlights, one of which is illegal to own so I won't talk about it... the other was Nightmare in a Damaged Brain- in particular the finale. It's on youtube if you're interested. Interested in early 80's low-budget kid-on-parents axe murder, you sicko.

Or indeed, the classic 1957 horror movie, 'Night Of The Demon'.

My boss, a pretty serious horror buff, has refused to even go and see 'Serbian Film', saying that the guys who made it were just trying to be offensive for the sake of being offensive, despite whatever allegorical claims they might be making. And surely 'The Gush' is probably as horrific, but funny as well?

I remember reading The Darkside magazine and loving reading about all the banned films, this one in particular stuck with me. The title is great, it makes me laugh just saying it.

Hmm. I'm intrigued. I'm trying to think of films that are illegal to own, but can only think of bestiality porn n' stuff.

It sounds like it could be the intro to Paul Naschy's Panic Beats. It's a pretty dull movie for the most part, but the evil knight shows up once or twice to liven things up.

Here's the (NSFW) clip you may have seen:

A fine performance by Terry Jones there.

My God, that is remarkable. The actor playing Amin sounds like Ronnie Barker!

August Underground?  Mordum?  That sort of thing?

Cannibal holocaust is serial pretty unpleasant even in the era of torture porn like saw, because of the fact the slaughter real animals in it, something which you could never do these days

You're not wrong, are you. Ruggero Deodato even had to invite the leading actors onto a talk show appearance to prove to a credulous public that they were still alive!

Aw that's great.
Did you ask him about a DVD/BR release?

Edit: Ah yeah, of course. Nice one!

D&T have this available, but i've not been able to find any info on whether it's uncut, or a new transfer or even legit. The version i've got is a VHS rip but seems to be fully uncut in all it's cock ripping glory, anyway, the DVD is listed as uncut on the site -

theres  this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maladolescenza

which several countries have tried to release versions of over the years but could get you in serious hot water under child pornography charges.  Although apparently japan have released it with pixelated genitalia under some kind of anime subclause...  it reads like a cross between natural born killers, kids and lolita. But outside of actual snuffy illegal type things, I dont know many films that were banned and havent cropped up in some edited state either...

Im still trying to get the mental image of watching salo out of my mind...     I was an innocent 15 year old boy who has just worked his way through the exorcist, a clockwork orange and the banned cannibal type films from the guy in the market when I watched that. Not wanting to pass it onto anybody in fear of what they would think, I think I hid it at the bottom of my cupboard and never went back!

This is what's happening at Northampton's Fishmarket arts centre at the moment...

Basically a shitload of televisions blaring out video nasties. Bloody great. Sadly, they're being shown on DVD and on modern tellies, and the pedant in me thinks it would've been more effective if they'd all been shown on massive 26" Fergusons hooked up to top-loading Panasonic VCRs.

He's one of my Facebook friends as well. The director of NOTD, James Wasson, briefly came out of hiding last year to do a Q&A session at a Hollywood cinema showing a brand new transfer of the film...so you never know!

VegaLA

Yeah. I read about that but it was too late otherwise i'd have gone to that event.
I need to check the local press more.

Definitely - VHS are completely the perfect medium for which video nasties should be played. Missed opportunity there ....
