Songs on the radio that you hear and like, but never find out what they are.

Maybe this belongs in Stereo Excursions, but this really bugs me. I got a taxi into work this morning (running late, you know how it is). The driver had the radio on, now this has happened a couple of times. In amongst the stupid inane banter a record gets played. I don't pay too much attention to what's out and about today, but this song caught my attention. I think I quite liked it.

Since my phone doesn't accept the 2558, music help number I texted a few of the lyrics down, to search on the 'net later. Unfortunately the 'net was of no help whatsoever. As mentioned before, this is a real bug of mine. The presenters of the show never tell you what the song is, just carry on prattling on about how wasted they where last night or something equally as stupid.

So if anyone knows of a song which begins with, what sounds like a siren, has the line "I'd rather die than be a slave" and the chorus comprises of various "I was watching.." lyrics, please post here.

Hairy Chin

sounds like 'In The Shadows' by The Rasmus to me, pop pickers.

Jonny Jonny Butter Fiend

Just checked the Ltrics, it certainly sounds like that. Now I'm trying to download it, if it is that, and I like it again, I'll say I Love you Hairy.

To Be Continued

Jonny Jonny Butter Fiend

Yes, just to reiterate..................... I LOVE YOU HAIRY.

I now realise that the answers to lifes problems aren't at the bottom of a glass, or on television.................IT'S ON VERBWHORES. From now on should I need to know anything I'll ask a whore.

Cheers :-D

Hairy Chin

Ta, mister Fiend

They're one of Finland's biggest rock bands y'know, Trace. Apparently. I like the song too, but then I am a cheesy local radio bod.

'Nuff said.

Hairy Chin

Heh, I know.

I wonder if there any other Finnish rock bands we should know about.

Hmmm
"Alamaailman Vasarat is a Finnish group playing horny and punky secret agent brass music. "

I'd like to hear some of this!

This is the time when Tom Rad should step in. And Sore Bottom Mum, seeing as he's such a fan of the Nordic way of life.

This should be a Permanent Thread.  Not that there are any songs bugging me at the moment, but it'll probably happen sometime this week!  (Expect to be moved to Stereo Excursions!)

But it's true - if I need an answer to something I can almost always find it from a fellow VerbWhore!

Utter Shit

I liked that Rasmus song until I saw the video. The guy looks like a total cunt.

Heh, that sample moved me to download a handful of tracks from one of the naughty secretly-music-industry-assisting-but-for-God's-sake-keep-that-a-secret file sharing networks.  This band is brilliant!

Vermschneid Mehearties

Usually it's adverts more than radio.

This year, that song by Eamon took me ages to work out what itwas and who it was by, and also Outkat's Hey Yah. That's the curse of not being interested in pop music. Whenever the odd good song (Eamon excepted, it's a stupid twatty song) comes along, it takes ages to discover who it's by.

I did a thread on Alamaailman Vasarat about a year ago and every fucker ignored it (apart from someone who said "Hmm, sounds good, might give it a go"). Do my pixels smell or something?

So you want more Finnish music? Well there's plenty of truly inspired and borderline deranged stuff going on up there. My favourite band of the moment for a start:

DEEP TURTLE

Poo, can somebody smell stinky pixels?

We are all sorry, Jim.  Thanks for this new recomendation.

Huh? What? I though I could feel my ears burning...

Finnish rock bands you say? Lemme think... I haven't really kept in touch with the music scene back home since I moved here, so I don't really know the hippest new bands that would be worth checking out.

I do remember Rasmus from a few years back, though. They were always a teenage girls' favourite, but craving to achieve some of that street-cred other contemporary punk-pop bands from lowlier beginnings had. You see, although Rasmus aren't exactly a manufactured band, their signing to Warner Finland two years after they formed was alledgedly greatly aided by the fact that one of the band members' dad worked for the record company - and quite high up as well... I think they are named after this teddy bear from a kids' cartoon that is popular in Finland:

Anyway, what other bands are there... My favourite Finnish "band" are Pan sonic, who do experimental electronic music and are one of the most exciting and original acts of their genre, and not just in my opinion :). I think their best album without doubt is "A"; it's a few years old and they have done two other albums since then, but they are a little bit more patchy.

Other Finnish bands I like are Ultra Bra, YUP and CMX. But they all sing in Finnish and I am not sure any of their material has been released abroad.

As for rock bands that you might have heard of here, I hear HIM are quite popular. One of the blokes from Jackass is a fan, apparently. You could describe them as a metal rock band. I'm not a fan, though, and have heard very little of their stuff, so I can't really tell you if they are any good.

I just got the new 4CD album, 'Kesto', and it's very good, very atmospheric.

I hate HIM. I'm pretty sure they're taking the piss though, but sadly some of their fans take their bleeding-wrist 'love metal' bollocks all too seriously.

Bringing the thread back on topic......

I have found out today that the song I've been tapping my foot to for the past few weeks was Maroon 5 - this Love. For whatever reason DJ's never namecheck this song but now I know and I can sleep in peace tonight.

You dare to diss the country that brought us The Leningrad Cowboys?

I'm not joking, neither.  ;-)

Not that you'll read this, since you're being ill in Greece at the moment.

Pornorphans - very slinky, slightly goth, female-fronted metalpop

Brothomstates - electronic geezer, did a lovely track called Dozenaday which was used in those Sprite ads not long ago

Aleksi Perala aka Ovuca, Astrobotnia and probably some more - another electronic musician.  Astrobotnia stuff's a bit hit 'n' miss, but he was good live on that Rephlex tour a few months ago.

Des Nilsen

There was one song that I'd love to know the name of. I heard it on a local oldies radio station (safe 50's & 60's material) and it had on odd bass-heavy (extremely bassy) skanky beat and strong drumming as well as children singing in unison - it had heavy christian overtones I think and was just so weirdly unlike anything else on that show.

I'd love to know what it was.
