non-"chick flick" films about women?

Theres tonnes of films about men, that don't really go into macho bullshit, such as Shawshank Redemption and Das Boot. They're films about people, who happen to be male.

I can't say the same for films about women. Off the top of my head Steel Magnolias comes to mind but that is still about weddings, hairdos and desperate housewives. It may not get into ultra-chick flick stuff like is-he-mr-right and shopping montages, but it is still not that far off from that.

What good films do you recommend that has a mostly/all female cast, that doesn't harp on fluffy romance themes 'n such?

Alien?

Is that a mostly female (human!) cast though?? I havent seen it in years, but do recall liking it alot. Weaver's character mattered as a strong person first, gender mostly irrelivant.

The Magdelene Sisters?

That's a good suggestion. pretty bleak film though. I'd forgotten about it til now. Not a film that does much to endorse roman catholicism!

Even 3 or 4 lead women will do. I'm not setting an exact cast figure here.

Good one. Anyway, 8 Women is worth checking out (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283832/). Although, it's a while since I watched it; it's more interesting to look at than anything else.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown? I'm sure Almodovar has done other female-centric films too.

All About My Mother and Volver sprang to mind when I saw the thread title, but I'm sure there are loads more. And sod it, watch them anyway as they're almost always great.

Subtle Mocking

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is centred around two females, but far from a chick flick.

Baise-Moi could be described in the same terms, but should be avoided. I might need to mention it in the other thread.

Secret Things is great but let down by the ending.

Johnny Townmouse covered most of the ones I was going to say...
Hard to think of one's with less romance for you but a few others worth trying (of varying quality):
Freeway
Freeway 2: Confessions of a trickbaby
Jawbreaker
White Oleander
Nine Lives
Things you can tell just by looking at her
Million Dollar Baby
Céline and Julie Go Boating
Vanity Fair
Switchblade Romance
Shortbus
The Runaways
Insatiable
Heavenly Creatures
The Messenger
Boys Don't Cry
Thirteen
Feds
Citizen Ruth

Ja'moke

Dark Sky

The Hours is one of my favourite films.

Incredibly depressing, mind, but utterly brilliant.

In fact, you could stay virtually any film with Meryl Streep in.
