Ridiculously difficult games

Depressed Beyond Tables

Here's one that looks like it should be easy enough once you get the rhythm going:

http://www.foddy.net/Athletics.html

I gave up after an hour. PB was 3.6 metres.

What games have beaten you?

Big Jack McBastard

How delightfully spazzy, after about 15 goes I got here:

..by dragging one knee while Chariots of Fire constantly almost started and then....

Why oh why did I do a screencap?

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Tip. Hold down P. shuffle along with q and w, your knee touching the surface and your other leg kicking forward. Slow but does the trick and prevents all chance of toppling.

Depressed Beyond Tables

I'm not sure I want to do the *tediously insert famous disabled person here* sprint. Dragging one leg behind you in a bouncing motion does not feel like an accomplishment to me, even if I were to complete the full 26 miles of a marathon.

I'm sorry but that's just how I feel on the matter.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Big Jack McBastard

The volume at which I just shouted 'FUCK' at my computer tells me it's time to stop.

Depressed Beyond Tables

Did you use the conventional bipedal technique or Shoulders' human-slug approach, Jack?

Big Jack McBastard

Bit of both, on one knee for the most part, (W pinned and P and O alternating to jostle him forward with a rare touch of Q to straighten out his right leg) just got too ambitious at getting him upright at the end.

Edit: Also a fucking hurdle? Who are they kidding.

I think I got 4 screens in last year? Ok, I didn't even try that much, its so difficult its pretty much just stupid.

Big Jack McBastard

Gave it a pop or 5 then the vids on Youtube enlightened me.... I think I'll leave this one be..

GAH! This is bullshit. I wish I'd never downloaded it. It's like Rick Dangerous designed by a mentalist. Funny for the first few minutes but then you just think, "Oh God, this is ridiculous."

The main problem is you're not only battling against the level design, but also the inaccurate controls. I played up to the point where my double-jump ability inexplicably stopped working and then gave it up as a bad idea.

I have completed this game, on easy. Not even tried another difficulty setting. It is enormously satisfying, I recommend perseverence. Some of the ideas and hommages are truly wonderful.

Pie Pie Eater

Well, it seems I was lying as I couldn't remember the difficulty settings. I meant medium

Anybody played this game, I Wanna Be The Guy?
It's a really great, really hard old-school platform game. I am very near the end, on medium, with 11 hours gameplay and over 2500 deaths.

I've reached The Guy on medium, some time ago, but haven't yet worked up the interest to actually defeat him.  Getting this far feels like enough of an achievement.

save point immediately before the guy

? That helps a lot, motivationally. Beating The Guy is actually not one of the most challenging things in the game, I think.

Here's a little song a friends band did about Mega Man 9.

I literally have no idea what they are saying.

On the subject of difficult games, I'd love to meet somebody that can complete Planet of the Apes for the original Playstation. Or just get past the bit at the beginning. It's fucking impossible - I'm sure it is.

Yeah - right next to the entrance to his room, isn't it?

Another thing that puts me off is the fact that every time you tackle him, there's a seemingly unskippable minute-long Castlevania: SOTN homage.

The hardest part for me was, by far, Zangief.

Yep. I must have had about 20 goes at him before realising.

Very true. I like to use this time to memorise my tactics for each section.

For me it was Tyson. I think I fluked Zangief - I don't remember dying that many times.

Yes, it's a shame, the vocal mix is particularly bad on the YouTube version...http://brutaltechnopunk.com/ slightly better version available there. Just an amusing song about how fucking hard Mega Man 9 is. I have yet to complete a single level. Just not worth the effort.

momatt

I thought of Megaman 9 as soon as I read this thread title.
I don't think I could even get through half of the first level.  Thank goodness for free demos.

For an actual ENJOYABLE and somewhat difficult game, see:

http://www.kongregate.com/games/arawkins/dolphin-olympics-2

And try to get to the restaurant at the end of the universe.  One of the few "impossible" Kongregate badges I've actually enjoyed getting.

FartOnMyBalls

Any game by Cave, they make ridiculously hard old-school arcade shooter games. Like Dodonpachi, I spent too much money on holiday trying to beat that cunt

Gradius III - one of my "proudest" gaming achievements is in "legitimately" beating this.  (I say "legitimately" because I played it on the PSP compilation, which allowed game saves at ludicrously far-apart checkpoints.

This part in particular is the worst thing ever, and caused me to die so much I nearly gave in.  Just to be clear, there is no pattern to those cubes, and they will fly at you faster than the Vic Viper can move with no warning.
