Obviously my body is my temple.

It's a crap temple which needs motivating, through music!

So, what works for you fitness freaks?

Electro? Techno? D'n'b? Classic Rock? Hushed ambient acoustic?

I know there's a few joggers here. I used to listen to podcasts but I don't find it very physically stimulating. What do you listen to, if anything?

Post your recommendations here. As well as hilarious anecdotes!

Whenever I'm running, I listen to this:-

I listen to the 5 CDs in the boxset while I run 400m, then I put on

and spend the next 6 hours pounding away as I complete my half mile.

I'm not sure I'm pacing it right though.

The Plunger

I find that a good Genius playlist from itunes which originates from a rap/hip hop track generally does the trick. You need something reasonably fast-paced if you're out running, but a full-on dance mix can become a bit repetitive to my ears and I sort of tune out. Whereas with a rap-based playlist you've generally got reasonably high tempo tracks, with interesting lyrical content to keep you switched on and alert.

I've never heard it myself, but apparently that LCD Soundsystem '45 33' thing that they recorded for Nike is decent as well.

El Unicornio, mang

It's got to be the Rocky soundtrack

Aye I have this ready for my next run. Apparently Murphy was full of shit about it being fine-tuned to the art of the jog, though. Just wanted to make a really long song or something.

Yeah, he was completely taking the piss. LCD are great for running generally though. All My Friends made me cry several times when I ran the marathon. Merriwether Post Pavilion is good as well, and Strawberry Jam. The last Fuck Buttons album. The Lotus Plaza album and Wolves and Wishes by Dosh I absolutely hammered in 2009 while running. Walkabout by Panda Bear and Deerhunter bloke. Oh, and NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. And The Past is a Grotesque Animal by of Montreal is amazing to run to if you want things to get intense.

Sorry, I got carried away. I miss music and running so much. :0(

I've been listening to this at the gym at the moment:

It's pretty mainstream stuff, but the tracklist is more-or-less inarguable.  Bargain at six quid:

Lord Mandrake

Make your own mix. Maybe the theme music from black beauty chopped into some aphex twin or mariachi music with vocoded bruce lee interviews. Maybe just record the sound of yourself running and panting.

I like to soundtrack everything so I wake to rainforest sounds, shower with aquatic themes, breakfast to recordings of kettle's/toasters etc.. Wank to cut-up porn samples and hacked phone sex over heavily phased 70's funk breaks. Right now I'm listening to my internet forum browsing compilation, it's a kraftwerk/talking heads mash up with live twitter feeds spoken via a accessibility program tweaked to mimic the voice of jason bradbury on meth.

I do a lot of gym work, but mostly strength training...
And while I have spent hours making training music, as mentioned earlier, classic rock and definitely the Rocky soundtrack (Rocky 4 in particular, although 3 is alright too), when it comes to listening at the gym I find it impossible.
Whenever I listen to music in public I feel like I'm making noises, this is exaggerated in the gym, with the chance that I may actually make a noise...
Also the wires get in the way.

babyshambler

I nearly fell off a treadmill doing air-drums to The Who live at Leeds the other day. I prefer listening to a podcast or watching something on my laptop over listening to music though. Something funny goes a long way to taking my mind off the tedious 6 mile jog I'm attempting.

Melodichaze

I'm always looking for good exercise music - shall have to get myself a copy of that Ministry of Sound album noted above.

I find a lot of Prodigy tracks and Aphex Twin's 'Come to daddy' really hit the spot, but because I've heard them so many times I find myself a bit bored if I play them too often.

If anyone has any more specific track recommendations that'd be great...

According to my itunes my current top ten exercise tracks are:
1. Dan Deacon- Woof Woof
2. Animal Collective - Brother Sport
3. M.I.A - Born Free
4. Lords of Acid - I sit on acid (Soulwax remix)
5. Future of the left - Small bones small bodies
6. Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta!
7. Johnny Cash - Rock Island Line
8. Robyn - Don't fucking tell me what to do
9. Love is All - Bigger Bolder
10. Atari Teenage Riot - Revolution Action

That said. this week I've mostly had on the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross 'The Social Network' soundtrack and it's been perfect for the gloomy weather

LCD's 45 33 didn't work for me at all. Too chilled out, think I need something more aggressive. Earlier LCD may work better.

Currently running to a comp of rocky Deerhoof numbers, which works well. Going to experiment with some M.I.A and PJ Harvey.

Some old Adam & Joe was good, but I probably looked like a maniac with the big grin on. Also, too distracting, nearly got run over.
